  1. Hmm..how much did you take out of the kernel?Did you make -jx modules, where x is 2,3,4,5 ect, or just make modules? Well, I took out the pcmcia things out, changed the processor .. and lots of other things like NTFS support and other.. Maybe I removed too much stuff. For the -j option of Make I did exactly like dolson suggest .. like evertything else. I used the -j3 option. Now I'm recompiling it with only one change, the cpu, with no -j option so we'll see about the time and about the stuff removed from the kernel. I'm compiling it with the .config file from the kernel-source RPM. Is it ok or there is differences with the arch/i386/defconfig file? That doesn't surprise me at all comming from you man... you get FPS of 800 or 900 with a PCI nVidia card whereas I get 400, 450 at best, with an AGP card ...  I have another question for you. Where did you find info about what you should leave in and what you should remove from the .config file? Did you remove firewire support and other things that you are sure you'll never need until 9.1 come out? How did you know about all that stuff? .. I mean going through the 'make menuconfig' program is long and painfull .. especially when it take an hour to compile and you are not sure that is going to work .. Thanks for the response!! 2. Hi all I recompiled my kernel with the help of THIS tutorial. I set some features with menuconfig. I have some questions about that: 1) It took 1:15 !!! Is it normal? --> Duron 1300 with 512 Meg ram 2) Now I can't boot at all with the new kernel. I select the new kernel on the boot manager menu (I tried with Grub and Lilo) and then the blue and gray screen appears. After like 2-3 seconds, here is what I get: I searched on google and tried mkinitrd -f -v --with=reiserfs --with=ext3 /boot/initrd-2.4.19-1custom.img 2.4.19-1custom but got the same results with Grub and Lilo. I'm loss. Anyone know what I should try next? I can still boot the default mandrake kernel no prob. Thanks for reading and suggest something MOtts
  3. So what are all these commands about? What about 'open' ? Why there is no 'exec' or something? Is it possble to make 'self-executing' programs then if we can't exec them remotly?
  4. Reinstall Shorewall .. You can configure what is going to enter at MCC->Security->Firewall. But you have to manually configure what is allowed to go out in /etc/shorewall/rules In is my rules: ACCEPT net fw udp 4662,6891,6892 - ACCEPT net fw tcp 80,443,4662,6891,6892 - ACCEPT masq fw udp 4662,6891,6892,137,138,139 - ACCEPT masq fw tcp 80,443,4662,6891,6892,137,138,139 - ACCEPT loc fw udp 4662,6891,6892,137,138,139 - ACCEPT loc fw tcp 80,443,4662,6891,6892,137,138,139 - ACCEPT masq fw tcp domain,bootps,http,https,631,imap,pop3,smtp,nntp,ntp - ACCEPT masq fw udp domain,bootps,http,https,631,imap,pop3,smtp,nntp,ntp - ACCEPT fw masq tcp 631,137,138,139 - ACCEPT fw masq udp 631,137,138,139 - IN DETAILS: ACCEPT net fw udp 4662,6891,6892 - ACCEPT net fw tcp 80,443,4662,6891,6892 - This is what is allowed to enter from the net. 80 and 443 are for Apache (if you don't run a webserver you don't need that), 4662 is for eDonke and 6891 and 6892 are for msn file transfer with AMSN. If you don't use either Apache, eDonkey or AMSN then you are not supposed to see those lines. All the ports that are not written here are stealth (hidden) from the net. .. that's good. The rest is related to internal traffic. I have a LAN with another computer and we share files with Samba so this is why you see ports 137 to 139 there. I suggest you to copy-paste that into your rules config file. Adjust it to your needs... specially ACCEPT masq fw tcp domain,bootps,http,https,631,imap,pop3,smtp,nntp,ntp - ACCEPT masq fw udp domain,bootps,http,https,631,imap,pop3,smtp,nntp,ntp - ACCEPT fw masq tcp 631,137,138,139 - ACCEPT fw masq udp 631,137,138,139 - look at /etc/shorewall/rule file .. it is well documented. 5. You could run Samba... well I know nothing else so can't help you much on something else.. lol I explained how to setup the thing there: http://www.club-nihil.net/mub/viewtopic.ph...7177&highlight= If you follow what I explained there, you should be able to share your $HOME directory. If you want something more secure then share only the [tmp] directory. Here is how: http://www.mandrakeuser.org/docs/connect/c...mba2.html#share Hope this help a bit MottS
  6. It's probably not the answer you are looking for but .. Have you looked HERE? MOttS
  7. I posted that on the other forum (club-init) but since most of the gurus are here now.. lol Once I'm in I get Now, if I type '?' I get Which command remotly execute a .exe on a windows computer? .. I tryed 'open blablabla.exe' but it didn't work. Is it possible? Thkx MottS
  8. For more reading: http://www.mandrakeuser.org/mub/viewtopic....ic=6726&forum=5 Also, even if you think that this file is big, it is not! ..like the rest of the /proc directory. Those files are not real actually. Look at that: And you CAN'T actually delete kcore. Try! you'll see. Just reboot and with Konq (or Nautilus) right clic kcore and select 'properties'. The file will be exactly the size of your memory. When you shutdown your computer, the file is deleted and when you restart the file is rebuilded. About Copyright 1193, I have no idea MOttS
  9. Here is some stuff that is turned on on your machine but is turned off on mine (and my system run smootly too).. so .. atd syslog (it fills your /var/log of reports about kernel and other things. If your system is ok then turn it off) sshd (If you are not a server you don't need that) ramdom (It is to generate cryptographic keys.. do you? This is turned off on my machine) numlock (It is turned off on my machine. I can do it by hand) partmon ("check if a partition if close to full up" .. since when we need that?) alsa/alsasound (I have another option called 'sound' which is turned on so this one is off) I could be wrong here so if anyone consider that I should turn a service on then just say it. MottS
  10. if you type '3ddesktop' it loads the diamons and take a snapshot of all your virtual desktop. So you don't need to manually add them. Then just type '3ddesk' and voila! MOttS
  11. With the GUI (Kde or Gnome or anything else) I don't think you can make it on a 75M HD. However you could remotly control the box with Webmin. This utility have a lot of features to set Apache and others so that may be a solution. MottS
  12. You have to edit /etc/sysconfig/vncserver, uncomment the last line and adjust it to your profile. For example, if your user account is XYZ and you automatically login to a graphical interface (therefore the :0), the last line of the file should look like that: VNCSERVERS="1:XYZ" Now you have to run 'vncpasswd' while being the XYZ user and type a password (this is the one you'll have to use when you'll remotly connect to your X session). Don't forget to open port 5801 and 5901 in your firewall if you use one and to turn the vncserver service on via the MCC. Now reboot and try to connect to your second X session (:1) with Konq or Mozilla using http://localhost:5801/ . Hope this help MOttS

    dvd::rip

I DVD to Avi with DVD::Rip also and never had any problem to read my Avi in Windows. You have to install the codecs from www.divx.com and the nimo packs ( http://www.btinternet.com/~nimosiro/ ). And forget about WMP.. it's not supposed to read Avi files made with Linux. You should use AviPlayer (from divx.com) or search google for a better one. Hope this help .. a bit. MottS
  14. You can surely do what you want to do without modifications by doing it as root. OR umount your fat32 partition and modify your line related to fat32 in your /etc/fstab file according to mine /dev/hda6 /mnt/Datas vfat iocharset=iso8859-15,codepage=850,umask=0 0 0 I think that you'll have to add umask=0 .. not sure. Compare your fstab to this line Once done, save fstab and remount your partition. MottS
  15. I think the Mandrake default firewall is enabled by default so openning port 137 to 139 would be great for sure. You can do that by opening the MCC (Mandrake Control Center), clic 'Security', 'Firewall' and finally clic the 'Advanced' button and enter the following ports: 137/tcp 137/udp 138/tcp 138/udp 139/tcp 139/udp If you are always online then you'll not want people to be able to see your local network hey. So to 'hide' these ports from the outside open a konsole and su to root (su + password). Then edit the shorewall rule file (vi /etc/shorewall/rules) and remove the port you just entered from the lines starting with 'ACCEPT net'. Here are my udp and tcp line.. as you can see you don't see 137, 138 and 139. This is to 'stealth' the samba ports to the net. ACCEPT net fw udp 4662,6891,6892 - ACCEPT net fw tcp 80,443,22,4662,6891,6892 - Here you see ports 80, 443, 22 .. blablabla because I run Apache and other stuff.. But if you don't run those softwares then you should not bother. The only thing you need to know is that port 137 to 139 SHOULD NOT be it 'ACCEPT net' line in your shorewall rules file to hide these ports from the net. Now save the changes (press the escape button and enter ':wq' and press enter) and restart shorewall by typing 'service shorewall restart'. Your samba server is now stealth from the net but fully accessible from your local network :-D You should also post your smb.conf here so that we can look at it. Finally you should give a bit more specifications about your hardware config... like how much ethernet cards you have, how your win98 box is linked to your Mdk 9 box.. etc. MOttS
  16. Under Linux you can pass the -v option to cdrecord, this way you'll get lots of info about what went wrong. Just copy-paste the error here. I've just shown to someone today on the other board about how to burn a cd image with cdrecord.. hehe. Here is the link. http://www.club-nihil.net/mub/viewtopic.ph...7032&highlight= For your first cd you'll have to redownload it if it doesn't match the md5sum..sorry. copy-paste the output here. MOttS
  17. But now you have to firewall at all.. You could try to remove /etc/shorewall/rules (if that still exist) and reinstall shorewall. The ICS was probably still there because all the masquerading commands was still in the rules file (not sure here.. ) MOttS
  18. I solved my problem in two easy steps: 1) reboot 2) share my printer with Samba and install a network printer in vmware. MOttS
  19. I did a bit of research and it seems that the printer cannot be re-attached to the host system (Linux) until the system is rebooted. Here it is (look at the end of the page): http://groups.google.ca/groups?q=usb+print...ters.com&rnum=5 But I refuse to beleive it..grrrrrrrr Anyone have experience that? MOttS
  20. Hi all I have an usb printer that is _usually_ working #1. It is _usually_ listed in /dev/usb as lp0. I'm also using vmware time to time and this morning I had to print something within vmware. So I unloaded the printer driver and shot down cups (rmmod printer && service cups stop). Then I opened vmware and pluged by usb printer to the virtual machine (clic device, then usb and then Epson Usb Printer). The virtual machine when up very nicely... like usual. Then I opened up m$ word and printed what I needed. Everything went well. When I was done with it I shot down vmware and did a 'service cups restart' (this modprobe the printer module too). Then I tryed to print an image.. nothing. tryed to print a text file ... nothing. The printer is dead. So I restarted the printer (off and on again) and went to /dev/usb and lp0 isn't there anymore!!! Even if I 'rmmod printer' and 'service cups restart' or whatever commands.... lp0 don't want to come back so now if I http://localhost:631, there is 2 files in queue and cups tells me 'printer not connected; will retry in 30 seconds'. But the printer is on !! .. it is just not listed in /dev/usb. I have to print in vmware and don't want to have to restart my computer everytime I have to print in it.. Anyone have a solution ?????????????? I know that restarting my computer would do the trick but come on.. it is not normal to have to reboot a computer to use the printer.. HELP MottS
  21. Have you been to the link I suggested you to go? .... because the whole .bin thing is really well explained there. MOttS
  22. Did you compiled sane and xsane from source or you used rpm? Also .. that may help you: http://mdkxp.by-a.com/htm/tutorials/snapscane20.php good luck MottS
  23. Don't trust the MCC for ICS status.. don't know why but if I 'service dhcpd stop' and go to MCC->Network->ICS, it tells me that it is enabled also. Is dhcpd still listed in MCC->System->Services? If you can access the web then it is not there anymore and it's ok I guess.. MOttS
  24. Open up 'rpmdrake-remove' and search for 'DHCP'. Remove 'dhcp-common' and 'dhcp=server'. Also, go in the MCC->System->Services and uncheck 'dhcpd' and 'named' if they are still there so that these services don't start when you boot up your computer. I think this should do the thing.. MOttS
