  1. thx for the screenie...I was wondering if the black and white icons were poorly sized for kde. I was going to port them to gnome but it'd be too much work resizing all of them to look correct. Sad...I was going to make a gtk and a kde theme to match. Oh well, I think I may go try and make some real gui ....E17 ;)
  2. well I'm not desktop flaming or bashing, I'm just stating what I see. The other day on the ubuntu forum someone mentioned contrib to ubuntu art because he wanted to contrib but kde already has plenty of artist...and I thought...huh? To me, this is not a matter of taste when the bottom line is that there has been nothing new and good for over a year? Yuk!
  3. cool you know, after reading the kde theme howto and seeing how much more powerful it can be over gnome, I've thought for a month to install kde again. It's supposedly the reason so many developers left gnome after 2.0 and went to kde, but.... ...after more than 1.5 years since using kde, all I see at kde-look as far as good themes go is the same things that were there 1.5 years ago. What is up with that? From reading the howto I can see that making a kde theme is a nightmare but come on. There no eyecabdy over there....I don't need the silly wallpapers....there has been more icons submitted...but where's the beef? I mean...everyone still uses plastic and bagara or whatever....nothing new since then? Ouch! That's very sad.
  4. Yup, urpmi/rpm is as good as apt/dpkg for even the more than average user. There's a few things that apt does well that rpm/urpmi doesn't either do well or at all, one of which is download, compile and install, from source for your specified arch B) . I don't know what your distro has to offer but have you looked at all the apt pkgs? :o and the apt-cache command? apt-build apt-file apt-show-source apt-show-version apt-cacher apt-src apt-watch apt-zip aptitude auto-apt axel-kapt netselect-apt update-apt there's also dselect...the fronted to dpkg and about 10 other dpkg pkgs as well. I use the rpm/urpmi commands all the time and have consistantly preached their power here. People don't like the cli and the good info on rpm/urpmi is not in the FAQ so, we have tons of dependency threads. I don't know how someone could say urpmi or apt is half assed, unless you had probless with them. I don't see how you could though. They're so easy.
  5. we need all of the error to be able to help. What video card do you have?
  6. who me? nah! Was it 10.0 that fried hardware (a cdrom)? ...and windows installs? B4 that, diskdrake that caused me to do numerous reinstalls. No, I don't dout it, but for this sorta thing it's very unlikely. It's too random. I'm stll running the same le2005 and another win98se install and it has been fine. Still, can't help but wonder. Now, I never use a linux util to mess with the partition table or mbr. Ever! I haven't any problems since, except the 2 above mentioned incidents, that didn't involve interactively using a linux util. But then, I no longer allow mandriva to mount the win partitions either.
  7. no one caught that? it should be; fdisk /mbr :woops:
  8. boot the 98 rescue floppy and run; fdisk /mbr That will give you a new win mbr. Could be the psu...symptoms match. Could also be a clogged cpu fan...symptoms match.....I've had it with both. On the same note, with neither of the 2 above wrong, I've had the same happen with win98se....Twice!...Recently!....since le2005, 10.2 ...whatever. For no reason at all, which makes me wonder if mandriva isn't doing something weird that it shouldn't. Linux apps haven't a clue how to handle win, so I wouldn't doubt it.
  9. vladstudio has 3 new wallpapers..... here's one of them in a screenie
  10. you laugh, but you can probably go to any linux forum (I've seen it on 3) and find the same issue....linux and/or firefox...slower than win... so, send the email, I'd like to here what he has to say about it :deal:
  11. Well, I've been running Deer Park and it is snappier. Whether that is because it is beta/better, or not from a distro...I don't know.
  12. Xmms did fine with 2 of my old cards and oss, but has always stunk with 2 cards and alsa. I use rhythmbox, but it is gtk and large like that other app you mentioned. It can be made mini and can run from an applet in the gnome panel though, but I gather you run kde? Sorry, can't help ya there. You also might wanna check that no xmms etra plugin weird stuff isn't installed. They usually make the sound worse IM-experience.
  13. well for me, like I said, it ain't just firefox or any particular distro, it is the OS. I started using epiphany because it was faster than firefox, but still slower than anything in win. The fact that you notice a diff from the rpm could validate the distro thing, as they are all diff....debian being the slowest. I'll go grab a tarball and see....maybe even Deer Park. Anyone try it?
  14. bvc

    using Gnome with LE2005

I always found GDM better and more stable anyway. Who'd wanna use a dm that restricts who can be in it? especially if it is gnome that is restricted :D gnome-session is the pkg you need to make sure is installed for gnome to be able to startup
  15. Either go into rescue mode of manfriva's cd1 and restore the windows bootloader or boot a win98 rescue disk and do fdisk /restore
  16. Just a few lines in a few files and whatever else mandriva has done to the pkg for their distro, if anything. Also when using tarballs on an rpm based sys, use --prefix= with ./configure ./configure --prefix=/usr because the default install location is diff with tarballs
  17. I thought 32MB wasn't enough for mandriva?
  18. Almost done with Scutum. I'm supprised at how usable is it becoming. There's a focus and a prelight for everything, and I haven't begun to hack the font colors yet. I will release another, more simple, metacity with it for those that don't like the modern space-ish look. Gotta figure out a progressbar still and do spimbuttons.
  19. Thx! Guess I go change a few things and see....
  20. Is it an Explorer? If not change the protocol to IMPS/2..... and specify how many buttons you have This is what I use for a logitech usb cordless 3 button 1 wheel
  21. On a 3 button mouse with one wheel, I've always used Option "ZAxisMapping" "4 5" The wheel is 2..so you only have 5 'buttons'. I wonder how 6 7 could work, unless it has to do with the Explorer driver?
  22. care to give us the link?
  23. configure your urpmi (rpm) sources for an le mirror and make sure gnome-session is updated...or any other gnome pkg for that matter.
