  1. Graphics card: ATI Rage 128 Ultra TF I have URPMIed Mplayer, but I can't figure out how to launch. Do I need to find a GUI?
  2. Just a little xine question. Like I stated in the topic descripition, it's not really a problem, just anoying. About every 4th or 5th time I open Xine, the color is turned all the way down (till it is b&w). I just turn it back up and everything is fine, but 4 or 5 starts later, it's back down again. Anybody have any idea what that may be? [EDIT] Forgot to tell you, I'm running MDK 10.0 CE (GNOME)
  3. You're right, that is kinda funny. Just out of curiosity. How far do they go with this? I mean Is it only individually wrapped items, or does a pack of gum have a "per piece" price tag also. (I'm not trying to be sarcastic. I'm actually curious)
  4. Left my laptop at the office for the weekend. I'll try the suggestions on Monday. Thanks for the advice all.
  5. WHAT... he blew up a McDonalds? Oh yea the rest of the article is interesting also . :P
  6. Here's what's going on: I've decided to try MDK 9.2 on my laptop (this was my first Mandrake dist. and It worked so well on my desktop). Everything runs fine (except for that stupid MS Wireless card) but my screen ratio is all mucked up. My laptop only really looks good with 1024 x 768 res., but MDK only gives me two options for resolution (800 x 600 and one even lower, but I can't remember it right now) and 1024 x 768 is not one of them A couple of days ago, I tried Knoppix on this computer and it worked like a champ (except for that stupid wi-fi card again) What can I do to fix this? Also, If anyone knows a good source that would help me get a MS wireless card (MN-720) work, I would appreciate the help. Edit: moved from Software by spinynorman
  7. Looks good. Think I'll give it a try. Just out of curiosity, what do you all mean by "knoppix leaves a mess"?
  8. Here's one for you. My buddy just bought a new DELL Latitude laptop with XP professional on it. He was just unpacking it when I came over. I have been trying to get him to try Linux for a couple of months now and I thought I would take a copy of Knoppix over for him to play with. So he gets his computer unpacked and starts it up. Everything cool so far. Then he starts talking about how cool XP Pro is (he had Win ME on his last comp). He opens up Word to type a test letter on (wants to check and see if this printer is set up) and decides to write a transfer letter for some investments that he has. 10 min later, right before he prints it, Word crashed. Ha, Ha, Ha. He had just been talking about how well it ran. I know, I'm sure it was a fluke, but it was funny. I mean, he just unpacked the thing 10 min earlier On a side note - He did like the Linux demo. And OO didn't even crash when he tried it out . He is giving the dual boot option some thought right now. Maybe a convert?
  9. Iphitus, the card is a "Microsoft Wireless Notebook Adapter MN-720". It is an 802.11G card. HERE'S the computer specs (PDF)
  10. I feel a little more shure now. HJ, I'll be looking for the FAQ, as I have MDK 10.0 on my desktop. What about my supposition that if Knoppix works then Debian should also? Anybody know if I'm following some faulty logic here?
  11. I'm just about ready to take the leap and install Linux on my laptop, but I want some advice before jump. First some sys. specs: Averatec 3150 1.3G AMD Athlon XP-M 1600 256M memmory S3 ProSavage8 video MS 802.11G Wi-Fi card I have been considering Debian for my laptop, so I downloaded the latest Knoppix and tried it out. Everything was recognized (except for that stupid wireless card) and runs like a champ on my computer. Here's the possibly stupid question: Can I assume that because Knoppix/Debian recognized all my hardware and runs fine, that I should be able to put Debian on my laptop with the same success? Or, is there another Linux Distro that typicaly works better on laptops?
  12. Excellent. I appreciate the input. Maybe I'll get lucky and have this set up by tonight  Thanks all.
  13. That's exactly what I'm looking for. Now I have to find It. You wouldn't happen to know where it is in MCC would you? Either I'm just stupid or I'm missing it. I appreciate your help.
  14. Can anyone reccomend a good FTP server? I tried vsftpd and proftp, but they seem way too confusing. This is the first time I have tried this so they all are probably gonna seem confusing, but I'm hoping you guys (and girls) might know of one that has a good tutorial and maybe runs thru a GUI. Here's what I'm trying to do. I have a buddy who took a job working on networks in Korea (I'm in Texas). We work on applications, back and forth together, but some are getting a little big to be emailing. I also want him to be able to pull over any other pertinent files when I'm not around. If anyone has some advice, I'd appreciate it.
  15. Dark, I'm liking your idea. As a relatively new user, this would really help me learn. I would prefer to use CLI method, but I am trying to convert as many of my buddies as I can, so it is nice to be able to show them the GUI way also.
  16. Got my first funny stuff happening since moving to MDK 10.0 CE (about a week ago). Yesterday, I noticed that 10 to 15 min after stopping Overnet, My connection was really dragging butt. I took a look at it in MCC's "monitor connections" (neat addition to 10.0) and noticed that my outgoing was 20 and 30 times my incoming (40 kbps avg. to 2.5 kbps avg.) I'm using an ADSL connection. I opened my firewall completely with no change. There didn't appear to be any processes running that would have affected my connection. Now, I'm still a relatively new Linux user, so I'm sure there are a lot of things that I can check. I would be gratefull if someone could give me some Ideas. Also, I logged out of Linux to print something in Windows (Still haven't got that Lexmark Z705 working yet) and when I re entered Mandrake, everything was back to normal. So I gave it another try. Overnet worked fine, but the same problem occured. So I thought, "let me log out and back in, and see what happens. That brings up the other funny thing. When I logged out, my screen flickered and It was cut in half. Actually it was more like the screen had dropped down half way on my monitor. Black across the top half and normal on the bottom half. When I logged back in (fortunately the log in line was still visible) I could see the screen, but the resolution looked like 600X400. I checked my settings, and they were correct. So I thought just for "grinns" I'll change it and then change back. Everything returned to normal. I haven't been able to reproduce that glitch. So, If anyone has any Ideas as to what might have been happening, I would really appreciate your help.
  17. I just loaded some fixes, and one was labeled as "kde sound default". I haven't noticed any sound problems but I was looking at this thread yesterday and that one fix jumped out at me. Related?
  18. And check you're firewall. I've had problems with "mysterious" changes to my firewall settings when tinkering around in MCC.
  19. Hey bvc. I just upgraded the same way to 10.0 CE. Mine's running fine (actually, more than fine. I'm one of those people who have seen a nice preformance improvement over 9.2). Is there a benefit to going OE over CE if all the updates have been downloaded? I'm just curious.
  20. mandrake-user, did you just call me "special", cause where I come from, them's fightin words..... :D Just messing around. I think I got your point, but when I first read your post, I thought, "mandrake is saying that I ride the short bus" then I realized what you said, and had to laugh at myself
  21. :D I did, so it must be easy

    Moody Overnet

I stated in a previous post, that I no longer had problems with Overnet. I was wrong. For the first week, every thing was running smooth. Now, it's getting "moody". Here's what it's doing. Download/upload speeds are excellent. But overnet will disconnect after about an hour. I have the auto reconnect enabled, but it fails. I will turn on overnet in the morning before I head out, and when I get home in the evening, It will only have run for the first hour (this fluctuates ((SP?)), but it averages about an hour) and will be on a constant "tried to connect - failed" loop after that. It stayed connected for 2 to 3 days after I upgraded, but the honeymoon is over now. How do I get the love back. :D
  23. I'm not sure what's on cd #4, but just did the 3 cd install with no problems. I hit cancel at 4 and everything proceded nicely. I was upgrading from 9.2, so that might have played a part.
  24. This was a wallpaper on my palm. Pulled it off to gimp it up a little, and never erased the orig. Was cleaning up my image file the other day and rediscovered it. And since bvc changes his daily :D , I thought I would too.
  25. Make sure you're giving it enough time. I thought mine had locked, so I left it alone for 30 min and came back. Everything ran fine after that.
