  1. EVEN WITH A NEW 2009.1 INSTALL YOU CAN STILL HAVE KDE3!! I'm in love with Mandy 2009 Spring, they have still included KDE 3.5.10, and it appears fully functional! This is what I did: - installed Mandriva 2009.1 from the Free dual arch ISO with LXDE as desktop environment - added all repositories (official and plf) with http://easyurpmi.zarb.org/ - openend a root console - typed: urpmi task-kde3 - after that, at the next login I had the choice of KDE at the gdm login screen and selecting this fired up the great beloved B) KDE 3.5.10 desktop! Well done Mandriva, to listen to all those users like myself who asked for a KDE3 option in Mandriva 2009.1! My first impression of 2009.1 is, this release is even better than the great 2008.1!
  2. Which version of mdv did you have before the upgrade? Free, One or PowerPack? I assume the restricted medium is the one that contains additional stuff for Powerpack users, and it currently appears empty: ftp://ftp.free.fr/mirrors/ftp.mandriva.co...tricted/release I think something might be still missing here, I would suggest to do a bug-report on http://qa.mandriva.com/ and maybe post this on the official forum at http://forum.mandriva.com too.
  3. You can either download the "Free dual arch CD" or the "Free x86_64 DVD", for example from this mirror: ftp://ftp.free.fr/mirrors/ftp.mandriva.co...cial/iso/2009.1
  4. You could use the Free dual arch CD or you could use one of the Mandriva ONE CDs, see also here for a description of each ISO: http://www.linuxtech.net/news/mandriva_lin...ing_is_out.html Of course a network upgrade as described by Ian should work too, but it might not be so suitable for someone with only basic Linux skills (I don't know if that's your case or not). In any case I strongly recommend to make a backup of all your data first, as an upgrade can always go wrong and then you will have to reinstall from scratch.
  5. For anyone new to Mandriva I have written up a short summary explaining the differences between the various ISO images available, to make the choice of the right one easier. There is also a screen shot of a default Mandriva 2009.1 KDE4 desktop. Here is the link: http://www.linuxtech.net/news/mandriva_lin...ing_is_out.html
  6. I do like and use many social networks, like for example Mandrivausers.org! I don't like and don't see the point of facebook for the reasons given in my previous posts, email works best for me to keep in touch with less close friends, or that live far away. I guess everyone has his hobbies and preferences of what to do in their spare time, personally I don't have that much time to waste on building a 'fan-page' of myself or to broadcast all boring (for others) details of my life to everyone I have ever met.
  7. That's what i use email for, much less hassle (no need to log onto another website to check for messages and to post updates), and I can choose who I bore with which specific details of my life. Also no central database (like facebook) that knows everything about me, my contacts, when I log on and so on... (yes I know, in various countries email server logs are kept for various amounts of time, but that's still not the same as it's different servers belonging to companies all over the world and no, I don't use yahoo or gmail or similar services).
  8. Let's not even start with the whole "nothing to hide, nothing to fear" rubbish, that's the dumbest frase ever coined, anyone who believes it, deserves all the consequences he/she will get because of it.
  9. I have been burning dual layer DVDs for many years with Mandriva (even with Mandrake 9.2!) using the command line tool 'growisofs', no need for windoze tools and wine. (but i agree with regards to the Verbatim media, I only ever used Verbatim DL media). Sunwatcher, you need to provide us with some more details, i.e. error messages from the logs or something, otherwise it's a bit hard to tell what your specific problem is.
  10. Just a wild guess, but maybe try to change the SATA mode in the BIOS to legacy (or compatible).
  11. Correct, but the very serious problem I see with facebook in particular is that they force everyone to join with their real name and surname. (You can trick the software but noone will add you as their friend as you will be the only one not using your real name) This fact is what makes facebook very Orwellian and that's why I would never join it. Besides, there are enough other social sites where you can use aliases, even mandrivausers is an example of such a site (I know it's not the same as Facebook, but I actually prefer using specialized sites for specific purposes rather than one site where my whole life is exposed, and with my true name too)! Myspace is just unsusable (and IMHO primarily a vanity site for teenagers and C-list wannabe pop-stars), most of the pages are so overloaded with flash and graphics and comments that they almost crash your browser upon loading. I haven't even tried twitter, as I have never been a fan of instant messaging.
  12. Using newer packages on older releases is less likely to work than the opposite (in fact you might notice 2008.1 repositories as well as newer ones, still contain quite a few packages of older releases that work just fine). I would recommend to download the SRC rpm and then rebuild it, that's much more likely to work. (I have done that successfully for quite a few packages recently, that I then announced here and that are available on my website). If you need pointers on how to rebuild from a SRC rpm, just ask.
  13. to zip files use 'zip'! for example: zip -r foo.zip foo this will zip up the directory foo and all its contents into foo.zip
  14. Congrats to them. Lets hope the imminent release of Mandriva 2009.1 won't go unnoticed among all the Ubuntu related hype that will surely be swamping the news and reviews sections of online and offline IT magazines in the next few weeks... Mandriva needs strong PR!!
  15. nice write-up, you are quite brave to attempt that remotely... ;) With regards to JFS, you are right it can't be shrunk, but you can grow it even online: mount -o remount, resize /mountpoint this would resize it to the maximum available space on the partition. (you can also specify resize=<nr_of_blocks> to grow it to a specific size) I started using JFS last year and I'm very happy with it, it's really true that it's very fast and at the same time very light on cpu/ram resources.
  16. thanks Lexicon, for posting that link, it's a great list. Unfortunately not all of those apps are avaiable as Mandriva rpm packages. As posted in other threads here, I have packaged up some of those for Mandriva, they are available in the in the downloads section of my website: http://www.linuxtech.net/downloads/ I will probably test out some other applications from that list that I didn't know about and package them up for Mandriva, if I find them useful (and if they are not already in the Mandriva repositories).
  17. Interesting that you say so, as I have never found a benefit from using pulseaudio (or arts or esd), as alsa has been directly supporting multiple concurrent sound applications outputing sound for quite a while already. The only sound server that I find useful is Jack, but that's primarily for music production software (rosegarden, soft-synths, etc...) Could you explain why you like pulseaudio so much? (I'm not trying to be polemic, I'm just genuinely curious what pulseaudio could be good for) With regards to the mencoder issue, maybe it could be worth filing a bug report to mandriva, or try to compile the latest svn source directly yourself and see if the problem is still there (it probably is more a kernel or driver issue though, if you say ffmpeg is affected too).
  18. That doesn't sound good, which version of Mandriva is that, 2009.0? Did you file a bug report? It's quick and easy, it will likely take you less time than the time it took you to write this post, here is the link: http://qa.mandriva.com
  19. Ok, I have found the Mandriva 2008.1 package 'bootloader-utils', which contains the command '/usr/sbin/rebootin' that seems to do what Jean is looking for. I haven't tried it but the man-page says: rebootin(8) Mandriva Linux rebootin(8) NAME rebootin - Reboots the machine using a particular Boot Loader entry SYNOPSIS rebootin [OPTIONS] <label> DESCRIPTION rebootin reboots the machine it is launched on. While with a simple reboot you need to manually select the boot entry to use at startup, rebootin allows to specify the boot entry on the command line. <label> is the name of the entry as named in the boot loader configuration file. rebootin currently works with LILO and Grub. Running rebootin without any argument displays the list of available boot entries as supported by the current boot loader. OPTIONS -f Create a /fastboot file to reboot in fastboot mode (eg: no fsck(8)). -n Don't reboot immediately just set the flags for next reboot. FILES /etc/lilo.conf /boot/grub/menu.lst The rebootin executable (perl script) SEE ALSO grub(8), lilo(8), fsck(8) AUTHORS Pascal Rigaux, Mandriva pixel@mandriva.com Chmouel Boudjnah, Mandriva Mandriva 03 Mar 2001 rebootin(8)
  20. Simply edit the file /boot/grub/menu.lst and change the line that says 'default 0' to the preferred boot entry. 0 refers to the first OS configured, 1 to the second, and so on.
  21. True. See here for end of support dates: http://www.mandriva.com/en/mandriva-product-lifetime-policy Basically MDV 2008.1 will be end-of-support for desktop packages (which includes Firefox) in a few days, while base support will continue until October 15, 2009.
  22. I would suggest to disable Pulseaudio and try without it. I haven't yet found any reason why to use pulseaudio, it has only given me problems so far with no conceiveable benefit, therefore I always disable it immediately on any new install.
  23. fixing a mounted filesystem is not a good idea... (I guess you didn't notice the OP said he ran the fsck on the mounted fs, otherwise I'm sure you wouldn't have suggested this) xbuin, if you have no remote console access I don't know either how you can find the root cause for this and fix it. On last thing, have you checked if in /lost+found/ there are any files from orphaned inodes from previous fscks? If yes you can have a look at those and see if from the content you can recognize to which files/applications they belong to, this might help your root cause analysis.
  24. Ext4 is still way too immature, I wouldn't trust any important data to it yet. JFS is mature, very fast and actively mantained (as in: adapted to be compatible with new kernels), therefore right now I would choose JFS and that's what I'm using. In a year or so ext4 might be stable enough but as most people frequently reinstall their OS anyway choosing now ext3 just because of the upgrade path to ext4 is pointless (when reinstalling you can change fs type anyway). Also it has to be seen yet if ext4 is as fast or faster than JFS. With regards to filesystems I'm very conservative, I certainly don't want to loose data because of a filesystem flaw.
