  1. I've made a speedtouch to work under mandrake 10CE (the green frog usb thing), and many people have that too. In XP, you can bring up "internet options" in control panel, "connections" then "properties" of the dsl connection...there would be a number like "0,100" in the phone number and that would be the vpi and vci number. this is the network setup i suggest: phone line->speedtouch->PII comp->ethernet hub->all the other PCs good luck with the howtos...

    KBasic

Visual Basic has to be the worst thing that has happened to programming. QBasic is decent. KBasic seems like a port of that to Linux. I especially like QBasic's support for simple graphics, you can make a small game easily. Though it's non-free, I sympathize with the author, it's still for the good of Linux. Maybe in better times it will become free.
  3. do you have the speedtouch configured in windows? if yes, what windows version is it? a linux based router would have an entire computer dedicated to it - any old computer can do. but it needs a usb port if you're using the speedtouch. Of course you can still use the computer like a normal pc, but you need to buy a hub to connect the other PCs. All in all it's much more complicated than buying an ADSL-ethernet router, but it's more customizable and possibly cheaper. please specify, specifically, what possible network configurations you want...
  4. change the MaxTapTime option, 180 is in milliseconds I think. recommended is 75 or 180, but I'm not too sure about what exact value you should give it.
  5. uh, forget this thread, it was just a matter of losing the nameserver each time I changed environments. sorry to have bothered you.
  6. my net is up all right, otherwise I wouldn't be able to download the stage tarball at all. however, emerge-webrsync just says "getting the latest portage tree" then goes back to the prompt after five seconds. But I've used a workaround - I used wget to download a portage snapshot and untarred it to the portage directory. But when I try to emerge anything, it says "temporary name resolution failure" for each dependency. I could wget those files manually, but that would be tedious. BTW, I'm using a 2004.0 minimal liveCD to install a stage3 2004.1, I don't think that should be a problem, do you? I've installed gentoo from stage1 before and didn't have this problem.
  7. I'm in a university in England, and one of the perks of the residences are blazing fast internet connections (LAN). However, for some WEIRD reason, I can't install gentoo or arch linux. I can surf, wget, use links2, but portage/pacman always fails to update (emerge sync says, "temporary name resolution..." thing, pacman says download failed). Now I know that this could just be the university firewall. but "emerge-webrsync" simply says "Getting latest portage tree" then goes back to the prompt. why shouldn't it work? I tried to fix my non-existent portage tree by downloading the portage snapshot and unzipping it to the portage directory. now I have a tree, but "emerging" anything fails since the downloads fail (temporary name resolution problem again). It's almost like having internet access but no internet access, if you get what I mean. I can download everything manually but that would take forever :( is this problem all in the firewall? btw, I can't ping at all, since it's also blocked. How do I scan a firewall to see which stuff is let through? any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.
  8. You guys are cool! Thanks for all the suggestions. Actually, I need X since I won't be the one to administer the server when I'm done setting it up. Some engineer used to windows will, and he would complain too much if I just gave him a text console. People just don't know anymore how powerful a text-based console really is. :( But that aside, I'm now looking at IceWM and blackbox as the WMs and Rox as the file manager. Has anyone here used Dillo the web browser? can it handle perl-cgi-generated pages? hopefully it won't be too hard to compile, or even better if it has a Mandrake rpm. I'll have to recompile the kernel to build it real small, but that would be after I manage to get all my scripts running. Er, the apache and database server won't be network servers, just local servers. I originally planned this machine to be a client, but the evil Server software vendor wouldn't allow me to hook it up, so I opted for standalone. Hopefully it won't be too slow with one user at a time.
  9. I'd like to know how much HD space it would take to install a bare-bones mandrake 10... 1) What WM is the lightest? 2) What File manager is the lightest? (must be included in the 3 MDK10 install cds) 3) can a 266Mhz Pentium 2 w/ 32mb ram and a 600mb HDD handle these? I also have to install apache, perl, a browser(Dillo? Mozilla?) and optionally a Postgresql Database server. I know there are many minimalist distros out there, but I'd like to stick with mandrake for a while since it's what I have working now, and I have a deadline to meet. It would be nice to be able to play with Gentoo or Small Linux on this, but I'm really short on time. Any thoughts on this would be greatly appreciated. Thanks
  10. I was just wondering, since I'm currently training in an oil refinery, if there was such a rugged handheld running linux, for the purpose of recording ultrasonic testing measurements. I've been to www.ruggedhandhelds.com and all their stuff runs windows CE which is not as customizable as linux (and MS is evil ). Not to mention Linux is technically superior to Windows. Wireless is not required, actually it's prohibited since one might be unlucky enough to wander into an explosive atmosphere in the plant (classified as Zone 1). :o And hey, rugged handhelds would be cool to take to mountain climbing trips. B) Anyone? there might just be a good amount of money available for this. :)
  11. hello there, I've been having Winmodem nightmares for the past month. after 4 kernel recompiles and a overheated hard drive, I still can't get it to work. A few more weeks and I'll buy an external one. My only problem with serial modems is the power cable, I have a terrible mess of cables already and I don't want to add to that. And if I get a Winmodem to work I'll have the satisfaction of turning M$'s weapon against itself.
  12. Kinda late for this, I've been very busy lately (no internet access for more than a week! ), but you're welcome. The day will come when linux drivers are installed in less than 2 days! /me tries to imagine what a heart of a bottom looks like ewwwwwwww :P Anyway, just PM me if needed, I can't visit this board as often as I did before. ;)
  13. put "slamr" in /etc/modprobe.preload, that should do it. As for the second thing, put "/usr/sbin/slmodemd &" to your .xinitrc or any startup script you use. I haven't used or installed my Smartlink modem myself, but thanks for informing me that it works (and that little ln -sv tip) :)
  14. i think iphitus and plati would like this wallpaper - ripe for modification :) iph, since you're a mod now you can delete this thread once you've gotten it or moved it.
  15. Good. Now put this in /etc/modprobe.conf: alias tty-ldisc-3 ppp_async alias ppp-compress-26 ppp_deflate alias tty-ldisc-13 n_hdlc alias ppp-compress-21 bsd_comp alias ppp-compress-24 ppp_deflate alias tty-ldisc-14 ppp_synctty alias char-major-108-* ppp_generic Have you edited /etc/ppp/peers/adsl ? Refer to my post last sunday on how it should look like. Change these things: 1. VPI and VCI numbers (you can get it from windows, or ask your ISP) 2. username
  16. ouch. that's my sig. My main problem in purchasing is I don't have a credit card, I have trouble paying unless it's COD :P I guess those other cash-strapped students might face a similar problem. Downloading is my only option until I find a linux reseller close enough to actually go to. (Software pirates who sell illegal copies of SuSE don't count) Believe me, I'm trying.
  17. No, the module is really called speedtch, it's not an error. Put "alias speedtch off" in /etc/modprobe.conf. The speedtch module should NOT be there unless you use kernel mode (which hasn't worked for me). I'll write a more newbie-friendly HOWTO when I have the time. i'm a bit busy nowadays. HTH :)
  18. If you're wondering, I just use the following iptables rule: iptables -A INPUT -i ppp0 -p tcp --syn -j DROP this blocks most of the input but none of the output - I just "nmap" myself from time to time to make sure I don't have trojans. And I'm very suspicious of binaries, especially executable binaries. Viruses aren't that much of a problem with linux :D
  19. Mandrake's Shorewall will not work with the speedtouch USB modem, it simply blocks everything on ppp0. You'll have to get your hands dirty to configure it for the speedtouch. I personally use Iptables for a firewall with speedtouch but I'm too lazy to change it or to even look at the logs if someone is trying to obtain unauthorized access. I promise I'll be more security-conscious in the future. I put up a link in "weblinks" called "does linux need a virus scanner?" http://www.linux-mag.com/2003-09/viruses_01.html This will also tell you about firewalls as well. Nothing too technical. Happy reading.
  20. thanks...i can install from source on the 2004.1 universal liveCD, so that's not so much of a problem. I'm a bit worried that this way will get me into dependency hell...maybe I'll just do this for the big tarballs and use dial-up to get the rest by emerge. :D I'll use the pentium4 packageCD for the rest of the stuff I'm too lazy to compile.
  21. I'm going to have access to a PC with a fast internet connection - but it's not mine. I'm not allowed to connect my laptop to this fast network and would be stuck in dial-up. In MDK, Debian and RH I just download the RPM or deb file and transfer it using an external drive...now can I do something similar with Gentoo? Portage confuses me as I cannot find actuall tarballs.
  22. my method seems difficult for some...I'm going out to test if this is possible with Kppp, so you would need only the VPI and VCI numbers. AussieJohn, I sent a PM on additional things you could do. Summary: Step 1: install speedtouch rpm Step 2: run MCC - internet connection wizard ->select skip firmware loading, don't connect at boot Step 3: edit /etc/ppp/peers/adsl (to match what I posted above) Step 4: type commands to connect - >modem_run -m -f /path/to/alcaudsl.sys >pppd call adsl after this you should be connected. Another solution is to buy an ethernet modem.
  23. This might answer a lot of questions from people who are migrating from Windows. It should actually be a FAQ, if the author consents to it. http://www.linux-mag.com/2003-09/viruses_01.html added - LiquidZoo
  24. Could you elaborate on number 1 please? Linux is not JUST "free as in beer" but "free as in freedom". That's what I like about it. My copy is actually mine. Normal software only gives you permission to use the software and not do anything else. It could be free in price, but only as a binary. But GPL'd software can be modified, improved, copied - anything you want. You can even sell it, but with the source. It's still "free" that way.
