    can't install rpms

you have to be root to install RPMs just su to root at a terminal. (type "su", hit return, enter root password, hit return)
  2. did you try webmin? i've never done samba, so this is just a shot in the dark. point the browser on the mdk box to https://127.0.0.1:10000
  3. i think I have a different problem w/ogle. it seems to be trying to open the alsa audio driver, but i have an audigy, which I believe uses OSS, not alsa. Xine is using Xv, according to the config file in my home directory.
  4. i finally got Xine playin' DVD's, but they skip...well...jerk. Basically, it seems like there are short spurts of pausing constantly, very short, but nearly constant. Anyone know a way to fix this problem? Hardware: AMD XP 1600+, 768MB DDR 2100 ram, Geforce 4 Ti4200 video card, ML 9 Ogle doesn't work for sh*t, everytime I try to open a DVD it just dies. Any suggestions? Maybe I did something wrong trying to get Xine to play DVD's, I'm not sure....?
  5. what do you expect? if they need money, they're going to ask for it. because they know there are people using their product that aren't supporting them. simple facts :)

    Film software

scroll down to the 2d and 3d graphics and such stuff in this post: http://www.mandrakeusers.org/viewtopic.php?t=2126 dunno if any of that is what you're looking for, but there's a good bit of stuff there.
  7. Don't get a Western Digital hard drive. Although they are good hard drives, Western Digital specifically states that they do not support Linux on them. I have 2 WD's, and have had a variety of problems during installs. Eventually it worked, but, it was querky at first.
  8. cheap...hmmmmmm.... [edit after reading the fine print pfft! no monitor!!! no wonder it's cheap.
  9. my brother and I used to play LotR2 all the time. and Age of Empires was a fun one too. Maybe I'll give this game a try when I have a bit more cash in me pocket.
  10. if you need help w/fluxbox, just post your issues. but... http://www.rpmfind.net//linux/RPM/cooker/c...-3mdk.i586.html there's a link to an rpm of the latest version of fluxbox. although, it is cooker, but i doubt you'll find any issues w/it.
  11. interesting note...viewing the readme (http://desk3d.sourceforge.net/README) it appears as if blackbox is not officially supported (it's not even mentioned), although fluxbox is-oddly enough. have you tried it under a different WM? i use waimea (not supported), and it can't seem to pick up more than one desktop.
  12. i notice no difference between ogg files and mp3 files. honestly, none.
  13. he's actually using aterm, but I don't know how to do it in aterm. should be a menu somewhere.

    totally stuck

I really get the feeling he's just trying to setup a network, not necessarily a file server. I could be wrong. But, if he just wants to do simple internet connection sharing, that can be done through the mandrake control panel (type mcc in a terminal window if you can't find it anywhere else). just look under Network & Internet->Connection Sharing
  15. I didn't really think about doing an rpmfind, as it seems the file is there, there just appears to be something wrong w/the code and gcc is not liking it. maybe i should have posted this in programming? I don't know...
  16. i use one of those online journal things, and i'm trying to compile one of the linux apps so i don't have to visit the website to post an entry. it's a livejournal one, www.livejournal.com, and i'm trying to compile either drivel or logjam to use for this purpose. both spit out the exact same message during a "make": /usr/lib/libpangoft2-1.0.so: undefined reference to `FT_Seek_Stream' /usr/lib/libpangoft2-1.0.so: undefined reference to `FT_Get_Short' /usr/lib/libpangoft2-1.0.so: undefined reference to `FT_Forget_Frame' /usr/lib/libpangoft2-1.0.so: undefined reference to `FT_Access_Frame' /usr/lib/libpangoft2-1.0.so: undefined reference to `FT_Get_Long' collect2: ld returned 1 exit status now, if they didn't both spit out this error, I would start out thinking this was a program error, but looking at it, this file seems to be a system file, not a program-specific one. anyone have any idea how to fix this issue?

check the permissions on that directory and it's files, if you want the world readable, make sure they are so.
  19. _as far as i can tell_ nvidia hasn't stopped making drivers or any of it's video cards which came out in the past...oh...4 or so years? but i'm no psychic, so, you never know. there's always that chance that nvidia could go under in the next 3 years. not likely......but, "hard to see the future is." It is clouded by the dark side!
  20. I'd go Nvidia, personally. but that might be because every video card i've had since i got my own personal computer has been an nvidia based card....so i could be a bit biased.
  21. yeah, partition magic should do this just fine. might want to defrag first, just in case...unless you already did it :)
  22. you can do an upgrade, but most people do a fresh re-install and just keep the /home directory unformatted (atleast, that's what i've heard).
