  1. how long does the page have to stay open? if it just needs to open and then close, you could always just add killall lynx to startup. But this is kind of a dirty way to do whatever it is you're trying to do...perhaps if you explain what you are trying to do we can find a better way.
  2. Please keep in mind that glxgears isn't necessarily a good test of performance. It's more intended to make sure that glx is working properly, not for benchmarking. You'd be better off comparing performance in a real 3d app/game.
  3. Please tread carefully. You are crossing the line into politics, which - as you know - doesn't belong in Everything Linux.
  4. There should be an option somewhere in the KDE Kontrol Center to turn off "Save Session" or whatever KDE calls it, or you should see a checkbox when you go to log out. Disabling this feature will keep KDE from saving session information when you logout. Unless you want that to happen...in which case you'll just have to deal with Firefox auto-starting, as I don't believe there's a way to blacklist programs from autostart.

    VPN problem

DNS info is always held in /etc/resolv.conf, not matter what connection (eth0, ppp0, etc.) you're using (IIRC). I would suggest setting up OpenDNS, it's faster and does a lot of nice little extras. I don't understand what you're asking here...could you clarify?
  6. And if 3d Acceleration isn't working in Linux, it won't work in VMWare (assuming the VMWare session is running in the Linux install where 3d acceleration doesn't work). At least, IIRC, because VMWare still accesses your hardware through Linux. dual-booting would be a much better solution.
  7. Pretty much. Someone recently came out with an external video card that could be hooked up to a laptop, but it's expensive and pretty much untested so I wouldn't even bother looking into it.
  8. the problem you're having with this comment: mysql -p < /usr/share/mythtv/database/mc.sql is that, apparently, you don't have the file you're sending to the command (/usr/share/mythtv/database/mc.sql). Either you haven't installed the mythtv package yet or the file is located in a different directory.
  9. Well, my Arch install is a bit broken at the moment and I haven't taken the time to fix it. I actually spend most of my time on my MBP now, using my desktop mostly for gaming (which means WinXP, unfortunately).
  10. Something to start it off: [click for larger image]
  11. not at all. obviously i was talking about package managers. OBVIOUSLY... :P
  12. You could also download one of the Mandriva One CD's (GNOME or KDE), which are only ~700MB, and you can install a base system from it (w/gui) - then add on any packages you want.
  13. i'll show you my front-end if you show me your back-end... :o
  14. I'm not sure where you really got that point...I'm sorry if something I said came off as offensive or insulting. I'm simply trying to discuss the idea with you...and give some suggestions as to how to resolve it (contact Mandriva). Isn't that what you were looking for? (Don't confuse my criticizing as some sort of use of my authority as an admin. I'm stating my opinions, not trying to tell you that you can't discuss the issues you have - that would be wrong of me.)
  15. Hey, you're the one who cares, why don't you check? :P - Like I said, ask them. Maybe it was a mistake that they missed it. Maybe they have a logical reason for it. Until you know for sure, you really have little basis to criticize. First, I'm not sure who my "minions" are...I mean, I do have plans to take over the world (what geek doesn't?), but I haven't gotten to the stage of acquiring my minions just yet - I'm still working on the placement of my secret lair. Second, maybe I wouldn't be too happy, but I would first contact the distro and ask them what's up, why it's like that, etc. before getting on their case about it. If they did it purposely, you have every right to complain, but you don't know if they did because you haven't bothered to ask them ;) (or, if you have, you certainly haven't mentioned their response).
  16. While to some extent you may be right, I'm sure you also know that the separation of permissions in Linux and other *nixes plays a large part in keeping Linux more secure. No OS is perfect, and permissions can certainly be circumvented, but that is not an issue of Linux - but rather just one of those things you "have to deal with" when working in any OS. Do I think as Linux becomes more popular, we'll start seeing more vulnerabilities being exploited? Maybe - but looking at how well vulnerabilities in Linux and it's related software are handled already, I think we'll see them get closed up. We may even see them get closed faster, as an increase in Linux users almost assuredly will increase the amount of resources dedicated by the big companies, and also an increase in coders willing to help out. This would mean more eyes, in turn meaning more vulnerabilities found and/or fixed in a shorter amount of time. But, we'll see, I suppose.
  17. I wouldn't be so quick to jump to conclusions about the placement of India in Locale's. Perhaps there is a reason behind it, and perhaps it is logical. Have you bothered to ask? It seems you are more interested in just bashing Mandriva... that's just MHO. I couldn't care less what your opinion of Mandriva is, no offense, as this board is not affiliated with them. As far as I'm concerned, as long as you're using Linux, it's a good thing. What distro you use is your choice - find one that you like and stick with it. If it's not Mandriva, oh well.
  18. Not a tester, but my friend had it installed on his PC the other night and I got to play around a bit. Definitely seems better than RC1.
  19. Well, first off, the free version should work with the same hardware as the PP. You should be able to use all your CPU's and all your RAM, so long as you have the right kernel (if not you can always install it). Note that to use all 4GB of RAM you'll need to install a 64-bit version of the OS (simply, 32bit can't handle more than 3GB for technical reasons). As far as your problem try getting the md5sum file for the ISO you have (it should have been included in your torrent, and is at least available somewhere) and check it with that. That will tell you if the error is in the ISO.

    help installing kismet

Putting your card into monitor mode requires 1) your card supporting it (some don't, such as the wireless in my MBP) and 2) the proper driver (to enable monitor mode). For some cards, using their default driver gives you access to monitor mode, but that's not always the case. How to do it on your system highly depends on the chipset your card has. In my experience, airsnort and/or kismet are the best program out there for wireless snooping.

    help installing kismet

break a wep key? easy, as long as you can put your wireless into the right mode. anyways, as far as installing kismet, just go here, download the rpm from one of the mirrors and install it using rpmdrake.
  22. Well, it's pretty much given that those users are going to change to one of the other themes that are made for their use (you know, those crazy, big-letter, high contrast themes that come default with GNOME). Although, I also agree what I'd prefer, at the very least, font colors that "pop out" a bit more.
  23. Yeah, that's what I was saying :)
  24. Yeah, but for some reason looking at these theme the brown just really sticks out and looks so much like chocolate my sweet tooth is aching. I guess in previous versions it wasn't so...brown...or perhaps a different shade...or maybe I just never noticed ;) Definitely.
  25. See my post ;) - libdvdcss has not been tested in courts, no one has challenged it's legality as of yet. So, it may be perfectly fine - decss on the other hand, is illegal - mostly because of that naughty cracked key.
