  1. What every you to make sure you do not have 2 partions formated as Linux Swap at the same time!!! It causes Major problems if you try to reboot the system while it's in that state.
  2. Any one else getting this Error or Simliar? When trying to run Mandrake Control Center or any of the Drakes that require root acess from the menu (or icons) in Gnome up pops a box. "Error" "Insufficient rights." Instead of the usual one that asks for the Root Password. I noticed that urpmi update drakX-tools again the other day and the problem may have been caused by that. However I'd also had to rebuild the ReiserFS Tree at about the same time (been trying out the 2.5.xx kernels and other custom compiled ones which probably caused the FS trouble). Any one got any Ideas or Solutions? Or can confirm this as a update problem? Mandrake 9.1 upto date as of the 6th (5th US). ta.
  3. if your in kde you should be able to browse the shares quite easily by runing konqueror and entering in the address bar smb://nameofwindowscomputer or smb://windowscomputerIPaddress or you could try runing Mandrake control center > Mount points > set samba mount points. If it shows your windows computers all you'll need to do is double click on them decided where to mount them and then click mount.
  4. Kiwis ftp://debian.co.nz/ has the 9.1 Iso's it's a fairly fast mirror. It's also NZ only international connections are blocked.
  5. Have you tried to install it skipping "individual package selection"? You can always install extra stuff through Software installer.
  6. Theres a util on the cd for dos that will check the cd's apparently.
  7. That sounds alot like a hardware problem. Other wise have you updated the Kernel? If you have try reverting and if you haven't try installing the latest one (19-24mdk). Also if you have a look at Mandrake Control Center > boot options there should be a app there that allows you to tell the machine you want to redo a part of the installation process next time you reboot (eg hardware detection).
  8. From every thing I've read in Cooker the download ed will be three cd's as normal. However this time they'll all be 650MB. Unlike last time when disk one and two were 700 and disk 3 450.
  9. Or else download the arts program if you got the plf version. If you compiled from source installed the libarts development packages and run ./configure again if it if arts is then listed in the active audio pluggins compile it and you'll have the arts plugin for mplayer allowing you to play sound with out shutting down the sound server.

    Sharing Drives

I'd suggest making a link to /dev/dvd to your home directory and sharing that as I don't think you can directly share things that are not in your home directory. ln -s /dev/dvd dvddrive then share the dvddrive link.
  11. Any one got any screenshots of the New Mandrake theme thats being discused in the cooker mailing list? It's apparently called galaxy and it sounds like they maybe making it there default theme.... There's apparently a qt and gtk version.
  12. I've got a win install but I'm pretty sure wines setup not to use win dlls. I'd recomend you get the Latest Source code and compile it from Scratch. Make sure you remove any previous versions of Wine or the wine-libs first.
  13. or if a nvidia or Matrox card (possible ati as well) -vo xv THis is the fastest option other wise -vo fb
  14. I've never bothered to upgrade but a friend di and had no problems at all. However he'd not customised the system or settings much. So it works some times and probably better when theres less customisation.
  15. I'm behind a Proxy server and a firewall and have had the same problem (error message) since I installed mdk 9.0. How ever the other day I a bit irritated by it and managed to fix it this what it did. Used Mandrake Sources manager to Remove all sources I'd added leaving only the 3CD's. Changed the proxy config to proxy IP and http port. 192.168.0.1:80 In Mdk Control center under network disabled the proxy settings and set the proxy server as the gateway. (The Proxy also supports NAT). Used urpmi.addmedia command to add the sources for updates and plf. Used Mandrake Source Manager to add a source for Contrib packages and then tested it I works perfectly now. I've updated Urpmi and all the rest with out problems. One thing though the stealth mirror was down yesterday so I'd suggest using another source.
  16. by the way ... what uni ... southern scarfie? mooloo? jafa? Canterbury. Biochem major.
  17. Yes My computers ended up with the same problem after I disabled all acpi option when recompiling the kernel. I'd suggest recompiling the kernel using the Mandrake defaults as a starting point then removing what you don't want while leaving apm and acpi totally alone.
  18. go to /etc/openoffice/ as root or su. Open openoffice.conf and change the line that reads FONT=AUTO to FONT=ARIAL . Then delete your /home/username/.openoffice directory and load openoffice.
  19. Load kmixer or one of the other volume control apps and make sure that Mute isn't enabled and that the volume sliders are atleast half way up.
  20. Possible but a quick search doesn't show it up. Star Control 2's a great game.
  21. Have you people Seen this? StarControl 2 for Linux. http://sc2.sourceforge.net/ The Origional developers have released the Source code and content for the 3DO version under GPL and a group has decided to update/port it and release it for Linux, FreeBSD, BeOS and Win32. They've Currently released and Alpha 0.1 how ever the game's playable both Skirmish and the Campaign theres a few bugs of course but it works. They've had to call it The Ur-Quan Masters as apparently some other company holds the rights to the name Star Control and are not prepared to release it. How ever the game rocks. It's nice to see old classic updated (openGL support, ogg music etc) and released for linux. Star Controls a very good game If you've never played it before Download it and have ago. Those who have played it before probably never got to this part of the message and have it partially Downloaded already.
  22. Have you tried using Control center to change the Rez after You've made the changes it asks you if you want to start X at boot.
  23. 20GB small!! I've only got 6GB. The Cheapest new HD's I can get in NZ cost NZ$140 which makes them a rather expensive purchase for a University Student.
  24. For games you might want to add this. http://sc2.sourceforge.net/ It's SC2 for Linux and Windows. The developers released the source code and a groups got to work updating and rewritting it to work on linux and win32. Still in Alpha status but it's playable and stable. @ 140MB and 20+ hours game time It's a very good game for linux!
  25. I've just had the same problem. I solved it after a varity of steps. - I uninstalled some dodgy fonts I'd recently installed as well as opensymbol using fontdrake - went to /etc/openoffice and changed the openoffice config file's font setting to Arial intead of Auto - Deleted /home/user/.openoffice - went to /usr/lib/openoffice/share/fonts/truetype/ and created symbolic links to all the MS true type fonts I had installed using font drake. ln -s /xxxx/xxx/xxx/xxx/xxx/* ../ - deleted xftcache - installed the Openoffice help package. - Restarted X after that the Font's turned back up in the menu. So one or several of those steps fixes the problem.
