    nVidia or ATI?

ATI cards do support 3D under Linux, if you can be bothered to set them up. Didn't bother on my laptop, but have on my desktop.
  2. I've got a strange problem Konqueror, whenever I try to access the internet the window opens and then freezes. Its quite happy running as a file manager, accessing ftp sites, or viewing websites stored on my hard drive. Also the problem is only affecting one particular user account. I've tried rummaging around the .kde directory and deleting some files but no joy (yet). I don't really want to have to delete all the KDE settings on mass, so anyone got any suggestions? PS The problem is recent, not from when I installed MDK.
  3. ftp://ftp.mirror.ac.uk/sites/sunsite.uio....ndrake-iso/i586
  4. I don't know how to fix APM, but if you want to stop from being loaded: Mandrale Control Centre -> System -> DrakXServices Then find the entry for "apmd" and un-select the load at boot option. I think that installing the nVidia drivers will help your system, if you've been browsing the forum you'll know I'm not a huge nVidia fan ;). Apart from that, I would try switching off some of the eye kandy in KDE/Gnome. Also have a look at the DrakXServices and see if anything is being loaded at boot which you don't need. The less you have running the faster it should run (in theory). You can select the windows manager at the log-in screen. Once you select a user you can pick from all the installed window managers from a drop down menu. I think Mandrake will by default load whatever you used the last time you logged in. I'm afraid I don't know any good sites for console commands, I tend to stick with own notes I've accumlated over the years. Edit: Really should learn to type.
  5. I meant as in from the available options, sorry. :(
  6. Your machine is an i586. I thik the following is true: i586 = All the Pentiums, Celerons, K6s and Athlons ia64 = Itanium x86_64 = AMD Athlon64 and Opteron PPC = Power PC - Macs Alpha = Type of RISC
  7. Yes there is, but the solution depends on what desktop your using. For KDE there is a deamon called "arts" which acts as a middle man, allowing multiple apps to use the card at once. For it work however the apps need to be told to use arts, if they're not it won't work. For most apps there is an option in the config menu, for instance Xmms: Right Click on GUI -> Options -> Preferences, then chnage the output plugin on the IO tab. Then close and re-open Xmms (not strictly needed but helps). For apps that don't provide arts support themselves you need to change the shortcut command used to launch them so that the command reads: soundwrapper <app_name> eg: soundwrapper realplay Gnome has an equivalent, but not using it myself I don't know much about it. Hope this helps! :)

    Aopen CDRW

The manual mount probably wouldn't work because Mandrake uses supermount for CD and DVD drives. Could you try looking at the CD from the terminal, as that would tell you if its a drive problem or a KDE problem.
  9. Out of interest how did you get it to boot?
  10. I don't this is the answer but its worth trying. Every time I've installed Mandrake all the sound hasn't seemed to work after the install, but when I mute then un-mute the channels everything springs to life.

    nVidia or ATI?

I didn't mean well rounded in terms of whats bolted onto them, I agree with you that the All-In-One cards are daft. What I meant was performance, the nVidia cards I have used have always been great for games (ie 3D), but not as good (when compared to ATI) for everything else such 2D, DVD, VIVO, etc.... Edit: Nor did I ever say that nVidia cards were not well engineered. It is simply my experience that they seem to be designed with gamers in mind. There is nothing wrong with that, but most of what I do is 2D.

    nVidia or ATI?

Well I am about to buy (hopefully) an ATI 9200 128MB, so I guess that kind of answers that question :)

    nVidia or ATI?

Personnally I have always prefered ATI cards over Nvidias. I think that ATI gives you a well rounded card with more features, while Nvidia seems only interested in game performance. However from my experience (limited as it is) Nvidia's are the easiest to set up.
  14. There is no reason you can't have multiple modems in Linux, you just have to tell it which to use. I recommend using Kppp as its probably the easiest to use. From the K-Menu select Networking->Remote Acess -> Kppp This should launch the app, select "Setup" and the config menu appears. In the accounts tab enter the details of your ISP. Then go to the device tab and there is a drop down menu for you to select your modem. The default is "/dev/modem" which probably the internal one. You serial modem should be "/dev/ttyS0" I think, but you can use trial and error to find it. To find out if you've got it right go to the Modem tab and press the Query modem button. Once its all set up close the config and hit connect. Good luck.
  15. I think Arthur makes a good point, to the vast majority of people the actual software is immaterial. As long as there is a word processor, email client, and web browser most users would be happy. KDE/Gnome are no harder to use than Windows IMHO, just different (and not that different any more). It seems to be simple fear of anything new that holds them back. As an example, my housemate is not is not exactly a computer nut but does know her way around one. She always refused point blank to try out Linux, until one day when her computer failed it was use my Linux box or nothing. Other than having to ask the name of the apps she wanted, much to her surprise she had no problems.
  16. You could try using the standard Xine packages instead of your self compiled code or code for the AMD64. The PLf packages might not work quite as well, but its worth a try.
  17. I am not entirely sure what your arguement is, but I get the feeling I don't agree with you. While I agree that device support in Linux is not quite as good as in Windows, but I woudn't say it is that bad. For instance everything in my desktop and laptop works under Linux. And except for a couple of things in the laptop I only needed the drivers that came with the install CDs. While for Windows if I relied on the drivers that came with it the system would be near unusable. Also surely it is the manufacture's duty to provide drivers? On support, exactly how much support does MS offer? Er... not very much, must support contracts are with the PC manufacture not with MS. There are companies that offer support, but normally only targetted at companies. Finally how is the situation ever going to get better if people don't use Linux or take it seriously. Foot Note: I wouldn't say there is a best Linux distro. Surely it depends on what your going to use it for?
  18. There is a 64bit version of WindowsXP, and its even free of charge. Draw back is that its a pre-lease version and its only a 360 day trial. Still not bad value for MS. http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/64bit/d...ads/upgrade.asp
  19. Could be propriety? In which case it won't be included on the install CDs or Cooker.
  20. Yes a HD install does just ask for a directory, its the type of install I did. You have to make a different type of boot disk and thats about it. But I think yu still need to download everything, because the installer has a hdlist.cz and got annyoed at me when just one of the files was missing.
  21. I am guessing that you haven't got the kernel source package installed. Open up the Mandrake Software Installer and do a search for "kernel". Look down the list until you see a package called kernel source or kernel devel (check thedescription as well as name) and then install it. You will need to make sure its the right sorce code for you kernel, the easiest way doing this is making sure that the rpm comes from the install CD. You need this package/s because Mandrake is a pre-compiled rpm based distribution. that means that all the software is compiled and ready to go, unlike Gentoo where you compile everyhting yourself. There are essentially 3 types of rpm; compiled, src, and devel. Compiled is pretty obvious, src is just source code. Devel packages are there to be installed along side the compiled rpms, they provide all the header files etc that are needed to compiler other software (like your driver) that require the thing you installing. Things are slightly different in this case but thats basically the problem (I think).
  22. I would just use whatever is in your machine, but generally speaking things are backward compatible but not forwards. So an AthlonXP should run code compiled for for an athlon, i586, i386, etc.....
  23. I haven't yet tried out Mandrake Move, but heres some general advice. First I would try playing sound using other apps. So you could try launching Xmms and using that to play mp3s, and also try playing an audio CD. You could also try playing a mp3 from the command line to see if its an app/kde problem: mpg123 /home/martin/some_file.mp3 (if mpg123 comes with MM) If all that doesn't work have a look at what driver/settings are being used in MM and compare them with SuSE. If they are different you could try changing the settings in Mandrake to those of SuSE. If you're still having problems post your system details and the error messages. Good luck :)
  24. You are right the Discovery pack is only 2 CDs, not 3 like the Download and Powerpack editions. Even if you do buy the Discovery pack you can still get access to the contents of the third CD by adding one of the many ftp mirrors to urpmi. Which pack to choose? That is a hard question! The Discovery pack is far a bit cheaper, but I probably still go for the PowerPack personnally. If you have a got a DVD drive get the DVD and save yourself the disk changing. Did you know, all the commercial packages in the PowerPack are available to the poeple who subscirbe to the Club? I think.
  25. Hi Si, Konqueror is part of the KDE suite, and I think that any settings you choose in the control centre apply to all KDE apps.
