  1. you could always unzip them on the command line: tar -xf archive.tar # Extract all files from archive.tar. (from tar help)
  2. Just installed the KDe 3.1 (rc5) rpms from cooker. Everything went well except for one thing. KDe no longer seems to remember my mouse settings. I set it to double click mode, which it will remember for a few minutes, then forget them. Been playing around with it, but always forgest the settings. Anyone got any ideas?
  3. Possibly a stupid question, but you are sure the rpms installed properly? Try doing the same search in Kpackage, and seeing if it gives the smae answer.
  4. I had similiar soundin prblem once, turned out ot be a dodge cable. Try taking the cable from one of the working computers and using that to connect the machine. If it works, then you need a new cable.
  5. Could you post the contents of /etc/fstab, it might contain some clues.
  6. Quanta Plus comes with Mandrake. Its eas to use, and got a lot of features. Its not WYSIWYG but personnally I prefer it that way.
  7. Card Reader: You say that both 8.2 and 9.0 detected the card reader. Did they create a dev entry? (/dev/sda1 on my machine). Create a directory to mount the card in: mkdir /mnt/memory_card Then mount the device: mount /dev/sda* /mnt/memory_card That should allow you to see the contents of the card. Camera: Even if Linux has no drivers for your camera it should detect it on the USB bus. If it doesn't find it at all, it would suggested a dodge connection. Try booting with and without the camera connected. Plus try riggling around with the camera.
  8. A lot of modern boards have BIOS settings instead/as well as jumpers, lot less fiddley. Here is a good site that has got guides on how to configure/use ALSA: http://www.djcj.org/LAU/guide/index.php
  9. I found running Samba and Lisa at start-up really slowed my machine down. Maybe worth a try.
  10. Umm, interesting I've never had a real problem with stability in KDE. Just seems to work. AS what desktop to use, depends what you want. KDE and GNOME offer an all-in-one option, desktop, filemanager, editor, etc... Thens theres Flubox or Sawfish which are more simple.
  11. I've just renewed my membership for a second year, answer yur question? Oh and a stick would be nice, but for a car. As that would involve me having one to stick to. :)
  12. A couple of things you could try: - Try different USB ports. - Try plugging in the device after you've booted. Wait a few minutes then check /dev again. (Its takes a while for it to update). - Make sure your camera doesn't have some daft download setting.
  13. Question is how long would it take them to notice in the first place. :)
  14. The one I've got is called " ZiO! " and theres versions for most versions of memory card. (Mines for SmartMedia) Its USB and I just plugged it in, MDK automatically created a dev entry for it and made an icon on my desktop. Occasionally I have to manually mount it. In which case its just: mount /dev/sda1 /mnt/memory_card (as root)
  15. Does your camera have removable memory cards? If so you can get USB card readers which are fairly cheap. I found it was mcuh easier to setup this up under Linux than my camera.
  16. If your a member of Mandrake Club there is an rpm avaliable for RealPlayer. Oh and it doesn't like running under KDE that much, I guess because of arts.
  17. I think they are on cooker, try: ftp://ftp.mirror.ac.uk/sites/sunsite.uio....6/Mandrake/RPMS No idea how well they will work!
  18. I use Knights, for KDE. Its can use several different engines, like xboard, but it looks prettier. Out of interest does anyone remember a game called "Battle Chess" for the PC? Now there was a good chess game. :)
  19. To create a desktop shortcut in KDE right-click on teh back ground, then 'Create New' >> 'Link To Application'. This opens up a dialogue box, which you just fill in. The 'General' tab just covers the basic stuff, eg name and icon. You then need to go to the 'Execute' tab. In the command box type the command you want to run. (eg kppp for the KDE dial-ip program) And thats it, you have a shiny new desktop icon.
  20. I've got a WinTV PCI card. Under MDK 9 it just works. The installer picked it up did everything. it even prompted me to scan for channels the first time I used the app. Now thats what I call service!
  21. I've got a L'espion digital camera that doubles up as a webcam. It configured and worked under MDK 8.2 fairly easily. Haven't tried it with MDK 9.0 yet.
  22. If your modem is internal try moving it to another slot, this often fixes resource conflicts. If its external do you have another serial port (or whatever it uses) free?
  23. After you re-partitioned your drive did you try booting windows again? It could well be that you damaged your FAT partition. Linux is fairly reboust when it comes to mounting things, Windows tends to be more picky. Which would explain why Linux can still read the drive, but the boot floppy won't.
  24. Found a quiz on the BBc news site. It tests you knowledge of Linux and FS in general. http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/technology/2547495.stm I got the question about emacs wrong. :(
  25. I'd probably have a seperate partition for documents, but then I have lot the stupid things littering my drves.
