I think I have it, I made changes to the file /etc/modprobe.d/sound, so it read alias snd-card-0 snd-emu10k1 alias sound-slot-0 snd-emu10k1 seems fine for now, but I guess only time will tell.

I have 2 sound cards in one of my PC's, an Audigy 2 ZS and an M-Audio Delta 44, I want the Audigy 2 to be set as the default card, as I only want to use the Delta 44 for recording with Rosegarden, Ardour etc. Until the last time I booted up everything was fine, Audigy 2 was the default card, but now the Delta 44 is. I have changed the order in /etc/modprobe.conf from alias sound-slot-0 snd_ice1712 alias sound-slot-1 snd_emu10k1 to alias sound-slot-0 snd_emu10k1 alias sound-slot-1 snd_ice1712 but it just changes back after a reboot. So what do I have to do to make the Audigy 2 stay as default? I'm not using Pulse Audio.

You will find it in Non-Free. Just make sure you have the Non-Free source set up, type in unrar, and you should see it.

That is what I though, and I just couldn't understand how anyone, by any stretch of the imagination could call that 'not Linux Compatible', I mean you got to format it anyway, you may as well say that all unformatted drives are incompatible. :huh: So I thought there must be something else. I do, they are my preferred drive manufacturer.

Well, technically I guess, however they do show up in the 2008.1 PLF repositories, so they are there.

All those packages you mention are present on the PLF repo's for 2008.1 You could try using the Switch to Manual Mirror Selection option if you want to select which mirrors you want. (If I'm understanding you correctly) [edit] If using MCC to install/look for software, make sure you have both dropdown boxes, (upper left), set appropriately, set both to all.

How does a hard drive be not Linux compatible? is it just that the drive/drives in question are preformatted NTFS, and if so, can it not just be formatted for Linux, just as things are done now, or is there something else going on here? You could most likely use something like CloneZilla to create an Image, and then restore that image to the new drive. I have used CloneZilla on a friends XP machine, to clone his C partition on a drive, then format the partition, then restore the image, worked brilliantly, fairly easy to follow. http://www.clonezilla.org/ For the package lists, I'm unsure after the event how you would go about it, but during installation, just at the end before you eject the MDV CD/DVD, there is an option (maybe under Advanced or something) that allows you to save the package list, you could then use this on another installation. I have never actually used it, but I did select it to create the package list once just out of curiosity. Maybe just something to keep in mind for the next time you install.

I am a PowerPack subscriber myself, however I don't install/use any of the stuff that differentiates the PowerPack version from the Free version, although I did take advantage of the nvidia driver for convenience this time :) I like Mandriva, out of the different Distribution's I have tried, it is by far my favorite, and I am quite happy to give them a little money for it. You will be able to disable it if you go to MCC, as described above, then select Hardware, then Sound Configuration. Just remember, write down, take a screenshot whatever, the present settings, so as you can easily go back to what it is now if you must/desire.

Well, I don't use the 3D desktop stuff, but if the latest is not available in the regular repos, main/contrib/non-free, it may be in the backports repo, or testing. You would have to enable these, and or set them up if not already. Bare in mind though, that the software contained there, is not as tested as the software in the main repo's, and hence could be unstable, but I, as have many others, used stuff from backports etc before, you just got to be aware that there may be problems, it's up to you, myself, I wouldn't be to worried about it. As I said before, If you do decide to grab something from backports/testing/PLF, it is a good idea to disable those repo's after you have got what you want, and just keep the main repo's active, Main, Main-updates, Contib, Contrib-updates, Non-Free, Non-Free-updates. As for the Audio thing, just have a look and see if Pulse Audio is enabled, and if it is, you could try turning it off, and see if that solves your Master Volume annoyance. Like I said, I don't use Pulse Audio, but have read that some/all who do, have duplicate volume controls that they must use.

Not sure what you are talking about here, I only have the one Master. Are you using Pulse Audio, I have read that you have to adjust 2 separate controls with that. I don't use Pulse Audio myself. Sorry, never had to do it What if you open it, then right click on the title bar, select Advanced then select Keep Above Others You should have configured that when you did the Easy Urpmi thing, they would be Main, Main Updates, Contrib, Contrib Updates, Non-Free, Non-Free Updates. I think you are using the Install and Remove Software menu entry, is that correct, Try either Menu/Tools/System Tools/Configure Your Computer, or the Configure Your Computer icon in the task bar/panel what ever you like to call it, or, just type mcc in a konsole, it all gets you to the same place, MCC, Mandriva Control Center, and you can do all your software adding removing and much, much more from there. While you are there, you might want to unselect the PFL repositories that you set up via Easy Urpmi, the reason being, is that these are not Officially supported by Mandriva, and you may only want to use them when need, as in getting codecs and stuff that isn't available via the official repo's. It's up to you, but I just thought I would mention it, not that there is anything wrong with PLF, there isn't. If you set up Backports and or Testing repositories, you might want to disable them also, and only use them when required. You can do this via MCC/Configure Media Sources for Install and Update, and then just unselect those that are not required

If I understand you properly, you want something to download the video's from You Tube. If you use Firefox you can install the Download Helper Extension, and it will do that. http://www.downloadhelper.net/

PLF has stuff that maybe a bit on the gray side, when it comes to being distributed with the distribution. They may have patent issues for example, lame(mp3) dvdcss(decoding DVD's), win32, etc, etc, some of which may be illegal depending on where you live. So Mandriva can't distribute them, that is where PLF comes in :) non-free, no that is not what I was talking about, but it is good to add that as well, and don't worry about the non-free bit, it has nothing to do with cost $ The best way,IMO, to add sources/repo's, is by using Easy Urpmi, and by the way, you can't add the PLF repo's via MCC(the add programs thing), for the same reasons mentioned above. Try ps -e in the konsole For codecs, have you got the PLF repo's set up? If not go to Easy Urpmi and set them up, main, contrib, non-free and especially PLF http://easyurpmi.zarb.org/ and install the needed codecs, a few things you'll probably need are, lame, win32, real player codecs, dvdcss2 etc . . . You could try libqt4-devel, it is the only package that shows up on my system after a search for libQtUiTools in File Names in MCC

You can use the cooker repo's, as they are the same as 2008.1 while cooker is frozen. http://forum.mandriva.com/viewtopic.php?t=83948 You would find your nvidia driver in the non-free repo. There are also some repo's for 2008.1 up, you may not be able to add them through MCC, or Easyurpmi just yet, but you can do it manually. I'm just set up with each PC plugged into a 4 port ADSL Modem/Router, so they are sought of connected directly to the net, but there is some sort of firewall in the Router, but I just had a look, and it looks like I have never set it up/turned it on, and I don't really understand the settings available in the quick perusal I just had, nor do I really want to spend the time researching. Anyway, I have now installed 2008 Spring PowerPack on both machines, while shorewall is installed, during installation, I disabled it from starting up, and I fear to start it up to see what happens, because as it is, everything is working how I want it to. The shares on both PC's remain accessible after reboots, I don't have to jump through any hoops to make it happen. :) While what I said here is kind of true, I took note during the 2 installs of PowerPack I just done, iptables is not selected by default, and I made a point not to select it, however it appears that somewhere along the line it must come in as a dependency with something else, as it does actually get installed.

Well, I uninstalled Shorewall, then install Firestarter, wasn't that a bust. It wouldn't start. Whether you tried to start it from the menu entry or the CLI, you got the same thing, just a little window popped up and said 'unknown error'. So I just uninstalled that also. Now everything works fine (touch wood), both PC's can access each others shares, and it holds over reboots. But I wouldn't mind having a firewall/shorewall working, but I am not to worried not having one, I would rather not have one and have my 2 PC's talking to each other, than have a firewall, and having to jump through hoops every boot to get things working. Now to install 2008 Spring PowerPack . . .

hmm, this is what I am looking for, This just happend to me, I seem to recall it happening earlier, maybe 2007.1 or 2008, anyway, burning a Data DVD or CD with Verify Data checked, it will just eject the CD after the burning phase has complete, then nothing, if I close the tray manually, still nothing, it just doesn't start/complete the Data verifying. If however I burn an Image to disk, and have the Verify data checked, it will complete without problem. MDV 2008.1 Anyone know a solution ?

Just searching for something K3b related, came across this. I just finished burning a 4.3GB file with K3b, it was an ISO image, (Not burned as an Image, but burned as a data file), it burned without problem. Mandriva 2008.1
