You will need to go to easyurpmi to set up your sources --- just follow the directions and you'll be set ---- if you don't set up your sources you will only be able to urpmi the stuff on the cd's and nothing else.
You're really limiting your bandwith with that USB modem. I havn't looked at DSL modems for awhile so I don't know what the cost on them is but if it where me I'd get a new Modem with an ethernet connection.
I looked at my router and there does't seem to be anyplace for a USB connection. So you may need to go that route anyway. I know it seems like a pain in the butt, but the added bandwidth with an etho connection and the freedom of wireless sure makes it worth it.
the log in prompt for root is hidden by default in the log in screen unless you change it. to log in as root just type root for user then your password. As far as setting up root privileges for your user I would suggest not to even if your the only user. Do your admin stuff through your user by su'ing to root ( trust me you'll thank yourself for it later ).
Normally if the router can be set up through an URL it is compatable with Linux. I'm using the new D-Link "g" router at the house ( I forget the model # ) and it works just fine.
when in Linux hook up the device then open a browser and type 192.168.0.1 to access the configs. I don't remember what the default password is but it should be in you manual.
It is an RPM package manager. I forget what the url for the site is bit google for ---- EASY URPMI---- and follow the directions to set up you urpmi sources.
When you get all 9's at boot that means something has happened to grub/lilo. Just use your 1st Mandrake cd and type Rescue and reload the MBR. If I remember correctly there is a Tip/Trick for this on the board that has more detail.
I think you need to get the hpoj driver from HP --- this is what i had to use on my HP printer with some new sane backends before Sane would see the scanner.

here is the doc!
Sorry I didn't get back to you finlay. I hosed my system while playing around a bit ! I'm in the process of customizing SuSE on the laptop and will have to wait a bit on fixing Mandy.
Right click on the icon ---- click on properties ---- then click on the box that is showing the icon pic and choose a new pic ----- no need to be root!
I have a nice All-in-1 printer, copier, scanner, fax from brother and can do nothing with it in Linux. After doing some searching I have found that Linux and Brother are not very friendly with eachother.
I'm thinking of getting a new motherboard with the ATI RS300 chipset. I was wondering if anyone was running a system with this chipset and how well it is doing!
By the way LittleJohn you don't get Windows for free when you buy a preloaded system. It is factored into the cost of the computer. Go to any computer website and check out the diff. costs between a Windows loaded system and a no-OS system.
