  1. i would just chmod pcserver to 744, that is rwx-r--r-- that should do the trick. what i would do is ls -al /mnt so i could see the permissions of the directory. it sounds like the current permissions are set to 700 or 600 (that would be rwx-------- or rw--------- ).
  2. i went and did a search for "smack the penguin" i came up with http://1337-face.dk/pingvin.htm the game is addictive. my best score was 295.5. i once stuck the penguin in the snow, head first at a distance of about 200. my wife did beat me though. she got a distance of 297.3
  3. hippocampe, which firewall are you using? better yet, which front end (gui)? if its shorewall, firestarter, guraddog, and the like, its very similar to zonealarm, as far as denying/allowing ports. if your using iptables script, then that a bit out of my realm for now. please provide more info, so we can help you better.
  4. could you be any more specific, please? there could be alot of things causing this. need to know what hardware you have (including router), and what you've tried so far and any error messages.
  5. i have an old, old, old, old computer to. it is also a compaq pressario. a compaq pressario 5000us. i run mandrake 9.2/10 cooker on it. some things to check. running services. shut down unnecessary services. i only have 73 services running. second thing to check is, it could be your hosts are configured. /etc/hosts (i think). local host should be there as well as your out side ip address and domain name. these two things will slow the pc down and cause instability.
  6. M$ talks about tco, and concludes their the cheapest. what they fail to publish (and wont), is that in the long haul, linux is more stable and and more secure. i havent even gotten into backwards compatibility yet. linux isnt that hard to set up, for an IT guy, should be at least as hard as windows. at work we run NT 4.0 sp6. i am not in IT (although i wish i were). i keep pointing out to IT various security vulnerabilities (i can get to the registry editor several different ways). one of the ways involved OE. i suggested they disable it, or lock down the permissions. they said due to the java script various sites use, that would cripple alot of IE's functionality. so they'd rather live with "a few insecurities", than take the time to secure it right. linux doesnt face this problem, the permissions can be set as i suggested above with out hampering a browsers functionality. updates can (usually) be applied with out breaking the entire system. the other day in #musb i asked one of the users to hack me (i needed an app watched, so he could kill a run away app if my pc locked up). he could not get in at all. i could tighten it down more, but i havent had the time to do so yet. it took me one day to install and set the permissions and iptables to be properly configured, since then i havent had to mess with it. i do my updates, and thats about it. linux is less likely to crash than windows is, and thats cause linux is modular. i once was working on X, and it crashed. i had to delete the XFree86.config file and run XFdrake. no big deal. i have had apps crash, but linux itself rarely crashes. when you take the time to figure in the TCO in the long run, linux always wins. i would think, any self respecting IT person, would see right through these adds. to see them for what they are....propaganda.
  7. i dont know that much about raid since i have never used it, i was however, able to dig up a howto. its a howto for red hat 7.2, but the principles should be the same http://www.linux.org/docs/ldp/howto/ATA-RAID-HOWTO/ researching further, looking for VIA 8237 on google pertaining to linux and raid howto's only revealed to links http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&lr=&ie=...G=Google+Search checking the mandrake hardware compatibility list, it does not show the VIA 8237 http://www.mandrakelinux.com/en/hardware.php3 obviously it is possible to do raid in linux, but perhaps not with your controller. if it is, it sounds like kernel 2.6 would be the answer. doin a search for drivers proved to be just as difficult http://www.google.com/linux?hl=en&lr=&ie=I...G=Google+Search after going to viatech.com i found the specific controler (vt8237) and ran some searches on that http://www.google.com/linux?hl=en&lr=&ie=I...G=Google+Search the viatech page i got the information from was http://www.viaarena.com/?PageID=297 ok, so maybe i havent told you how to fix the problem, but hopefully i've given enough documentaion to point you (or some one else) in the right direction.
  8. read it for yourself http://www.eweek.com/article2/0,4149,1424319,00.asp
  9. i read that site quite some time ago, researched every claim. he is dead right on every point. even "Windows NT & .NET" magazine, a Microsoft publication, has a story (probably where frank got it from) called something like "NT the rest of the story" or "Is NT really NT?" in which they point out that NT was VMS rewritten in C. (i am going completely off my memory here, but please feel free to check it out)
  10. i found a list of LSB rpms, so i thought i'd share it with yall. https://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.p...?group_id=28610
  11. ac_dispatcher, only 2 books (at this point) i would consider good (well, maybe 3). 1 is "hacking linux exposed", great book on securing linux. 2 is a book from o'rieley on the linux kernel. 3 "linux complete". none of these books are cheap. "linux complete" is a 1000+ page book and runs about $20. "hacking linux exposed" runs about $50, and i think the o'rieley book also runs about $50. with these 3 books, you can master linux. hope this helps, enjoy
  12. i thoroughly enjoy this site http://rinkworks.com/stupid/ hope yall have as much reading it as i do.
  13. there is NOTHING M$ could do to get me back. i have been with windows since 3.1 all the way to XP. i beta tested XP, and foolishly bought XP. thats right, i spent $199 for the XP pro upgrade . i have suggested to M$ that they develop a new file system. kinda like XFS or rieserfs. they never contacted me back, but it seems they took the idea WinFS. i was already mad at M$ for the 300+ bugs and vulnerabilities found in the final release of XP that SP1 addressed. i at that time, wrote them and told them i would never buy another M$ product. now due to my recent issue with windows, i wont touch windows again. i wouldnt touch windows if they paid me for it. :deal:
  14. i knew someone in #mandrake that also noticed this. yes i do run 9.2. perhaps adding cooker to your sources and using "install Software" in this case would work. proceed with caution, and keep us posted.
  15. thats why i mentioned chroot, a jail. look into it. that is, if you must do file sharing, your safest answer.
  16. chris z, you did fine, and the right thing. this is something that we should keep an eye on. this is something that MDK users in general need to know. our ability to troubleshoot only goes to assist newbies. if we werent advised of a situation, how can we help others? how can we have a fix for it? maybe some feel by sticking our heads in the sand, we can be more productive, but sticking our heads in the sand is not productive. denial is never the answer. complaining doesnt help either, but then you didnt complain, just advised of a problem. as true to form, the "community" had this problem fixed in a matter of hours. would M$ have done that? nope.
  17. proftp, sftp, better still chroot the ftp. create a jail. best of all, dont do file sharing.
  18. just an update on this topic. it seems the situation is resolved. i used mandrake update to get the latest X. it picked up XFree86-4.3-24.1.92mdk plus the corosponding X server. it did not uninstall the old X. the only problem i had was my sound was muted. that took about 2 seconds to fix.
  19. i may have to. i'd prefer not to shell out the dough. i'd like to get wine working. i guess i'm kinda funny that way, i like to have things work.
  20. ]$ wine setup.exe Invalid path L"C:\\Windows" for L"windows" directory: does not exist. Perhaps you have not properly edited or created your Wine configuration file, which is (supposed to be) '/home/debyjon/.wine/config'. i usually can get wine to install a program, but it has never run one. need help configuring wine. i have been trying to get wine to work for over 2 years. havent figured it out yet.
  21. my first computer was given to me by my folks. it had 98se. i crashed that about 20 times, resulting in as many reinstalls. most of which were my fault. then i bought my own pc, and it had ME on it. i still own this pc although i no longer run ME. i was a beta tester for XP. i got to try RC2. i liked it so much i bought it (big mistake ). about 2 years ago, i had XP in NTFS, and went to reboot and suddenly the file system was fried. all in all i have had to reinstall XP 11 times. most of those were not my fault (i learned alot from my experiences with 98 and ME). i can usually fix any problem. i pulled out my cd to get into the recovery console, and it didnt recognize the file system. this was a natize system. i had not at that time installed linux. there were no viruses, no trojans, no worms on my system. what caused it? i havent a clue. i do know, there is no fix for it. the other night i went into XP (a truely rare thing). i was gonna prepare it resize the drive to make room for suse. my system has 2 drives. XP on hda, and mandrake on hdb. i ran sfc /scannow to repair any corrupted dll's. i set XP to do a thorough chkdsk upon reboot. when i rebooted, the chkdsk aborted. something about a super block. now XP will load to the splash screen with that blue racing bar, and imedately after it flashes a stop code and reboots. (same as 2 years ago). i again pull out the recovery console, and again it doesnt recognize the file system. i decided after this, that i will not install XP again (dont wanna go through 20 questions with M$). i went to install 98se from the cd, but it aborts upon trying to configure the drive. my wife wants windows only for the gaming. if i ever get wine working, its good bye windows. i am left having to fdisk and format hda1 from in linux. so that hopefully (in my case, i hope not, but my wife wants the games) i can install windows
  22. true, but not everyone does that, or even likes that. some do prefer the front ends. so by all means Qchem, write a nice iptables howto. look at how many people have asked questions about guarddog. this is why i'm doing this. as i am not familiar with all of them, i am asking for help.
  23. i was in #musb last night i suggested that we (those of us with the experience and knowledge) write howto's for the various firewalls, since firewalls is one of the most common questions this topic gets. i am familiar with arno's firewall, guarddog (somewhat), and firestarter. i need help with the others. KMyFirewall, Knetfilter, GTK-IPTables, ipkungfu, shorewall, iptables, and netfilter. if i missed any please include it as well. the howto should include screenshots (if there are any), link to the firewall documentation, and a link to the download.
  24. for a list of trojan ports, see doshelp.com/trojanports.htm there are several linux firewall utilities. shorewall, guarddog, kde has one, ipkungfu, arno's firewall, just to name a few. your best policy is.....if you arent using it, turn it off. that goes for services as well as ports.
