  1. Do you need to wait a few hours for the outside DNS to catch up? Have you tried connecting via IP address?
  2. xmms isn't for kde, it's a general x-windows app that will run in pretty much any WM/DE.
  3. It might be worth playing with xmms, it has loads more options for trying to play such things, including one for situations where there isn't an analogue connection between the cd-rom drive and the soundcard.
  4. Sorry if this has already been answered, but what are you trying to use to play the cd's?
  5. What have you done to share the connection? Configured it with mcc? Whats the contents of /etc/resolv.conf? Can you ping box1?
  6. you could try gmplayer (probably part of the mplayer rpm) for playing dvd's. Not sure if it supports menus though.
  7. I'm surprised actually. Although many photoshop fanatics (and professionals) just can't manage with the GIMP, I'd also have thought they were unlikely to be using Linux anyway and even more unlikely to fill out this survey. TBH, I bought a Mac so I can use Photoshop/Illustrator whilst still having a UNIX-based OS (amongst other reasons :D ).
  8. Note, you can check the version of your current running kernel with uname -a, the kernel source you install needs to match this.
  9. Do a uname -a to obtain the name of the kernel you are running. Then use urmpi (have you configured it with easyurpmi to add various web repos?) to install the matching kernel source.
  10. It's probably worth checking if anyone has had any success using ndiswrapper and this wireless card.
  11. You can get the latest version of ndiswrapper here. It's probably worth checking their list of cards to see if anyone has your card working.
  12. I would go for connecting it via ethernet - usually causes less problems. If you configure your network card in Linux to obtain an IP address via dhcp, attach it to the adsl device and then restart networking hopefully you should be ready to go.
  13. Hi Lupus welcome to the boards (I wonder if you're the same Lupus I already know?). The best bet with this card is probably to use ndiswrapper which loads the windows drivers for the card and uses those. Theres a thread over in tips and tricks about using ndiswrapper although it may be a little out of date. You can grab the latest version of ndiswrapper from their website and it's worth checking their wiki for info from people using the same wireless card. Please post back if you have any problems.
  14. So this device can be connected by both ethernet and usb? Do you need drivers for it in windows or is it configurable via a web interface?
  15. Which version of Mandrake? 10.1, 2005, 2006? If it's 10.1 the sata support is dodgy to say the least and you should probably try 2005 or 2006.
  16. Please post back if this solves the problem, seems like a good tip that may need to be pinned!!
  17. The wiki works for me too. Whilst you're trying to install openvpn with urpmi it may be a good idea to install make and gcc if you want to install packages from source. However, I would advise that whenever possible to go for the urpmi solution :D
  18. Do you have a sata cdrom drive by any chance? If so you may need to use a more up to date version of mandrake to support that.
  19. I'd suggest watching the boot process very carefully to see when the network comes up relative to the net mounts.
  20. Just after booting (when attempting to use dhcp) use dmesg to see the kernel messages, it may be worth comparing this with the same output from your statically set IP address. If you want to save the dmesg output for later, you could do something like: dmesg > ~/dmesg-dhcp.log Note, contrary to what an earlier poster said, always go for a reinstall as a very last measure - almost everything can be fixed that you can break in Linux.
  21. Does the network card come up before the filesystems are mounted?
  22. For me Linux is missing out in vector illustration. Inkscape is OK, but if you're wanting to deal with eps then there's nothing to compare to illustrator and freehand.
