  1. Someow I am not surprised by the Via USB problem. It seems there is a USB problem with both Via and Nforce2 chipsets.
  2. make sure they are spelled correctly: eth0 not eht0
  3. Is nforce sound enabled in BIOS? Make sure it is. You may need to do the acpi edit in your bootloader, if the mixer volume doesn't work.
  4. I don't use my burner for video. I use it for data. One DVD+RW equals 6-7+ CDRWs in capacity. Something to keep in mind.
  5. Since you stated that it worked when you Installed 9.2, Why not install again?????
  6. Geez! I read the statement about the Community Edition from MandrakeSoft, exactly as it was written, and did not apply 'political analysis' to it. I had NO problem with this. Most of the whining I see is from people who ASS U ME something it is NOT!!!!
  7. Going from 2.6.x to 2.6.x is not as big a development headache as 2.4.x to 2.6.x. I feel that 2.6.x is a huge upgrade from 2.4.x kernels. One thing we have learned, is that mandrake X.2 release is not always going to be as rock solid as 8.2 was (first truly rock solid version).
  8. Well, Sun has been throwing cash at SCO for a while now. Do keep that in mind.
  9. NForce is supported in 2.6.x kernel. No need to recompile or install binary RPM for them. My mobo has NForce2 chipset and all I had to do was manually edit the bootloader: Add at the beginning of the line: acpi=off noapic Remove: acpi=ht and my USB was working (had to get my printer working in Linux as USB and not Parallel) One nice thing with the 2.6.x kernel and nforce, is that you are not stuck with the standard kernel. I am using 10.0 CE.
  10. You might be better served getting a DVD All In One Burner. I have the NEC ND-2500A 8X and Mandrake loves it. I got mine from www.internetishop.com via eBay. Some people poo poo eBay. I don't. It is my primary shopping source (disabled at home). Check around on eBay before you go with other retailer(s). Oh, I paid $98 + S & H ($116) for my DVD burner (New OEM bulk unit w/Nero 6 OEM Suite 1).
  11. I have been buying Powerpacks starting with 7.0! The only one I have skipped was 9.2. I happen to be on a fixed income (social security disability at <$400 per month). I downloaded the public release 10.0 CE 3 CD ISOs to make sure things worked on my NForce2 mobo. I am going to get a copy of the CE poarpack for further testing. I do plan on getting a new Powerpack Subscription, starting with 10.0 Official. Me a tightwad? Not really. Just a very tight budget. :D

    ATI cards

I have been using an ATI XPert 2000 Pro for quite some time now. In 9.1, 3D did not work, but I got it back in 10.0 CE. I know, it is an old card (32 MB). Then again, I am not a hardcore gamer. Recently, when I had to diagnose a no video - no post problem on my othe mobo, I got a new mobo and an eVGA GeForce 4 MX 440 SE dual head VGA (64 MB 4X AGP). I have prooblems with it in Win98SE with a not enough memory error for my printer driver (vid driver loads first). So I am not using it at all for now. My interests ar in 3D CGI. So I am following this topic with interest.
  13. How about moving this topic to Tips and Tricks? I think it would be a good one for there. :D
  14. WSGrant, don't forget to manually edit the bootloader and be sure acpi=ht is removed, along with adding what I said in my post just above yours, at the beginning of the line. That is to get USB working.
  15. Thought, though I have never done this: try uninstalling the old kernels........
  16. I've done over 700 MB of updates. More like 750 MB. All using Mandrake Update and the first mirror in France. I haven't seen a kernel update. At least I don't think I have. I did over 200 MB just now and am all caught up. Until tomorrow.
  17. Gee, I thought if you burned an image to RW, it was nothing more than a CD-ROM after that. My formatted CDRWs have a capacity of 530 MB, and those are 10X RWs (not the old 4X). Then again, these were formatted under UDF 1.5 format with InCD that came with Nero 5.5.

    USB 2.0

USB 2.0 is backward compatible with USB 1.1. See if the EHCI driver is loaded (2.0). OHCI and UHCI are 1.1. It seems like your card reader is being seen as a 1.1 device. You may need to be sure your acpi=off noapic is in the boot loader and be sure to remove acpi=ht from the same line if it is there. I had to do this to get USB working. I don't have any 2.0 devices at this time, though that will change shortly.
  19. Gowater, I hope so too. :D
  20. As a matter of fact, I haven't done any updates to Nero 6. Thanks for the info. Just went on my MUST do list. :D K3B is a wonderful program. It loves my NEC ND-2500A 8X all in one DVD/CD burner. The way it is looking, this burner may be the best purchase I have made for my computer, so far. I am unsure about formatting DVD+RWs: whether these will become the equivalent of Rs as a result in K3B.... I am also a Powerpack user. However, the built in support for Nforce2 chipsets got me to tryout the Community Edition. I am glad I did.
  21. I used Mandrake Update and picked the first mirror in France. No problems. K3B: No problems. Only issue I had was getting USB to work. Easily solved by adding acpi=off noapic in the bootloader, and deleting acpi=ht. My hardware: Gigabyte GA-7N400-L Nforce2 mobo, Athlon XP 2500+, 1 GB DDR333, ATI XPert 2000 Pro AGP, 2 x 61 GB Maxtor ata100, 1 x 160 GB Maxtor ata133, NEC ND-2500A all in one DVD/CD burner, Logitech Cordless Mouseman Optical, MSFT Internet keyboard (soon to be change for something else), 15 inch Generic Analog TFT flat panel monitor, HP Deskjet 3820 on USB, Panasonic KX-P1123 on Parallel, and cable modem on onboard NIC. K3B love my DVD/CD and no setup was required. No issues with magicdev or anything other than Mozilla Messenger is worse than version 1.3.
  22. RW or R?????? Why waste money on RWs to burn ROMS. CD-Rs are cheaper, and are made for that purpose.
  23. I don't use Partition Magic, cause my experience with it, is it sucks. I use Partition Commander version 8 and System Commander Personal Edition. PC does ReiserFS and SCPE handles both ReiserFS and Win XP. It is a perfect combo. I haven't had any of the problem described in this thread. However, doing a low level format takes a LONG time. You should only need to do 10 percent of the drive or so. If you have a boot floppy or rescue floppy from win98/SE, just use FDISK /MBR and it will write out a windows MBR to hda. I use PC to do my partitioning tasks and SCPE to handle my boot managment.
  24. Each IDE channel (mobo connector) is a 2 device channel. So you can have up to 4 IDE devices connected. The Bios file in EXE format is a Self Extracting Archive, which includes the Bios file and DOS files as well. If you have Q Flash, it is better to do it within the bios itself. Check at least 10 times to be sure you have the CORRECT file and write the filename down, cause you don't always get a listing. The bios file needs to be on floppy. Make a backup of the bios that you have now, just in case. You don't want so much a burp in the power when the flashing is being done. So make sure your computer is connected to a UPS. Download the bios flash manuals and read them VERY carefully!! I have a friend who just flashed his bios. I gave him the mobo, cpu, and ram for it (I upgraded). Everything worked fine for me, but not for him. He was as transparent as a ghost when flashing the bios (first time).

    USB 2.0

Don't forget to use Mandrake Update and get all your bugfixes and normal updates. I went through the first mirror in France, even though I am in the USA and got well over 500 MB of updates (first update since install). It didn't find any security updates. Strange. Broadband is SO nice for updates.
