    DNS problems

If your logs say you don't need www in front, don't use it. or set your DNS server to point to the server with those requests.
  2. For Half Life All the addons are working great. Counter Strike et al. The networking and all work just fine for me at least.
  3. Here are my contributions to the cause: From Mandrake site (http://www.mandrakelinux.com/en/future.php3) Since April 2001, we have worked hard to converge quickly toward profitability by reducing expenses & increasing income. This has resulted in notable success as shown by the current financial results and positive trends. Reaching the "break-even" point is now planned for the next release of Mandrake Linux in the spring of 2003. Reaching the break-even point was initially planned to occur sooner *if* we generated enough financial resources (e.g. an increase of capital) to cut all of our expensive external contracts (these contracts had huge financial break-penalties). The company is now very close to reaching break-even. But as a result of this major restructuring, we need to restore our capital finances (e.g. we need cash) to meet our supplier's engagements, and to match expenses needed to reach break-even. The "Club call" last March helped greatly, but unfortunately was not enough. Our current cash needs are approximately 4ME ($4M USD). This level of cash infusion would resolve outstanding debts, cover the expenses needed to become profitable, plus secure an extra amount to satisfy the needs of future growth. In order to solve this cash issue, MandrakeSoft has been conducting a Warrant operation since May 28th, 2002. This operation offers an extremely convenient way for current shareholders to purchase shares at a low price (2.1E/$2.1). It should be noted that before the launch of this operation, MandrakeSoft already had a commitment from a large investor for $4M. This fund expected to receive its funding before July 2002, but has been postponed. So, the issues are: The warrant operation has been slower than expected due to potential shareholders being wary of the volatility of the current financial markets The investor's fund has experienced delays in receiving its funding. We've just been informed that it still will not receive funding in the short term so we cannot rely on him for the current funding We are also in discussion with several interested investors but those things takes time Additionally, we have yet another commitment for about 30% of a 4ME investment round, but to close this round we must find at least a 2ME ($2M USD) complement. As a result we have a big short-term cash issue.
  4. A French-law knowledgable person posted this in Newsforge comments: Posted by: Anonymous I would like to point that the French equivalent to Chapter 11 (named dépot de bilan) is not banktrupcy. If a company files a dépot de bilan, the company stops immediately to pays its debsts and the judge will name an administrator to sort the business and see what can be saved. If nothing work, he will start to sell the assets of the company and pay back the debtors of the company following a fixed order : first the State, then the employees and then the third parties. Mandrakesoft is now selling enough stuff to pay wages and overhead. Their cash problem looks to be caused by contracts signed by the ex-american-CEO who wanted to go into e-learning. These contracts have some penalties clause. When Mandrakesoft sacked the American and changed strategy they broke these contracts and they have to pay the penalties but they don't have the money : i.e. the actual problem. If they file a dépot de bilan, the people holding the broken contracts won't get a cent back. So they have a strong interest to accept a rebate on the penalties (better a little money than no money). So the bargaining is now on. If it doesn't succeed, Mandrake will have to file a dépot de bilan, if not they can go on. I think the problem stands in the fact that it must be american ex-dot-com companies holding these penalties. Do they understand French Law and that they really risk losing everything ? Can they bite the bullet if they are themselves in a very sorry financial situation ? I guess the management will try everything not to file a Dépot de bilan because it means that a foreign hand will take care of Mandrake and that the actual management will lose all its power. These administrators don't know nothing about the business of the company and they can ruin a fragile situation. They are talks in France that we shoudl change the bankruptcy law to leave the management, in case of a dépot de bilan. The bottom line is that Mandrakesoft will not disappear in a week... There is hope that they will survive and that they will certainly be a 9.1 (the question mark is for 9.2. We must all hope that the bargaining will succeed...
  5. As I said in my first post... The real problems start with movies and games. When the SWAP is filled, games are extremely slow to load and they loose their frame rate. Same with movies.
  6. Why do you need the URL for? Error code 500 From apache log: Premature end of script headers on /~user/cgi-bin/image.jpg
  7. From previous experience... *SQL databases are used widely by many many many programs. Why? Simple database needs can be served by them. Remember, *SQL isn't a web developers tool. It's a database tool. For example... Databases of users, user info etc are in SQL for some programs. I don't mind having them running. Just make sure you administer them right. I only allow localhost connections to them, making it a bit harder for people to get into them. They are also firewalled so I guess they do no harm when running. And there blueprint is little so there you go :)
  8. http://newsforge.com/newsforge/03/01/10/21...224.shtml?tid=3 Read it! It seems he is trying to say no to rumors, but he doesn't clearly do so. Worrying anyone else?
  9. Why on earth don't they make profit for God's sake? With the biggest user base than all distros, it shouldn't be that hard! First, a vast reorganization of their operations. Even their online presentation reminds of a startup dotcom runned by a bunch of 50 years old that learned about computers last year from a CD they got in the mail. Second. Offer something the users want! The downloadable version is as good as their boxed version, including all manuals etc. Stop giving the manuals, make people buy the box set to get them. And stop giving them a billion applications! Give basics, and anyone who wants more could just buy the rest. Is it that hard to do? Why do I need 8924375892 applications on the download version? I was willing to buy their overblown version, until I found out the terrible news about it. All the "commercial" applications included are demos working only for 30 days or something. WTF? Why should I pay you twice the price to get a demo? Bundle a commercial program with them. A subscription to WineX for example, or IBMs WebSphere come to mind. And for God's sake. When you give money out to Open Source, do so in moderation. I agree it's nice to give money out to the people that make your distribution, but what happens to the company? Remember, if you don't have it, don't give it. Not many more distros are paying money back you know. Offer them something else. Marketting. Do they even have such a department? Did they emphasize how they allow companies to install a client only able to do A or B, and no need for the billion of other things they ship with? Why not even make the install options Default/Office Computer/Advanced? See if the dumb people making decisions will like that a lot more than today's options. Should I stay here for hours and rant? I just wish they get out of their Ch 11. Granted, under chapter 11 you can maintain business for a significant amount of time, until you reach agreements with your creditors, but no company ever makes out of it alive. They will end up selling up their property to repay the loans, and that means everything from computers and servers to their pens. Good luck to MDK and to us all.
  10. It's not permission problems. It's world readable. It must be some way Apache handles directives, because all the files in that directory are treated as cgi and not as the file type they are
  11. I have some images under my ~/public_html/cgi-bin/albums/ directory to be viewed by an image gallery script. My problem is... I get an Error 500 when I try to view them (not from script, from image file). I checked the error log, and it seems it's trying to process the .jpg images as cgi scripts. I don't know how to correct it. Any ideas by anyone?
  12. I am using Gkrellm KDE Memory Information says I have 8Kb free of RAM, while Gkrell shows something more reasonable, 200MBs Specs: 512 MB Ram 1 GB Swap
  13. MoonChild

    Swap memory

So here is my question... My swap space (256MB) gets filled whenever I use wine, Abiword and OpenOffice. Unfortunately, it seems they never free it back, so I am stuck with no Swap until I restart X. I am unsure of why X keeps the Swap after the programs are shut, but it sucks because movie players use swap a lot, and I don't want to restart X to play movies. Any ideas on how to clear swap memory manually? Or how to tell X to release it anywayz?
  14. How about this? http://alumnos.utem.cl/tdam/
  15. Go from: Mandrake Control Center Software management Install New Software Click on all Packages Go to Sciences Choose Mathematics GNUcalc and a dozen others will show up. Also, some interesting, MATlab equivalents are around. Check them out if you are a math geek like someone else here :)
  16. I have similar problems sometimes. This happens approximately once every 9-10 days of computer being on. And it only happens when I play Counter-Strike through Wine. And the bad part is... Guess what happens when you loose mouse movement in CS.
  17. How about creating customer service before start selling it? And I believe it's about time the free version they give is less feature rich, make more people buy it. And when they sell, make it valuable. No more commercial demos we can download. And some decent manuals please.
  18. Check Linux World http://www.linuxworld.com/2003/0106.barr-p2.html The link is directly to the article, right page. Check prediction no 1
  19. How about we integrate these things on this website? A big collection of documents... Like in the Wiki Section? So we form it like: MUB.org - Articles (wiki) ...- What is Linux... Why Linux... Etc ...- Open Source stuff ...- Other Articles - Tutorials ...- How to setup modem ...- Font stuff ...- Etc - Forum ...- This Forum - Downloads ...- MDK ...- Other projects we might want to monitor - Links ...- Link categories - Live chat! ...- The one we have And yes, this may be the wrong place to post it. Dots represent TABS
  20. Unless you want Microsoft to fund Mandrake! Read mroe about in online :) Top prediction for 2003 :)
  21. Guarddog is certainly the easier one to use and configure! Give it a shot!
