  1. I was using Windows earlier. Now that I am in Mandriva I see that 'Install Remove & Update Software' (Software Management) has HSF packages for the Conexant modems. Here is some other information you might find helpful: dkms : a new way to install 3rd party drivers
  2. On my T42 it takes about 2 seconds to be fully suspended after pressing Fn + F4. On this same T42 it take about 8 or 9 seconds to resume from Suspend after pressing Fn. This is while booted into Mandriva 2007.1.
  3. You probably need to install the firmware for your modem first. If you can get online, make sure you have set up the non-free repositories first, then run the Network setup tool in Mandriva Linux Control Center (Configure Your Computer). If you cannot get online with that computer, then you need to find the firmware files, download them to another computer, transfer them to the computer with the modem you are trying to set up, and finally either install the firmware files (.rpm files) or untar them to their own directory. Next go to Mandriva Linux Control Center and run the Network setup tool. I am a bit of a N00b with Linux, but I believe this is what you need to do. EDIT: The first time I read your post I missed the bolded line. Hsf:www.linmodems.org: Conexant|HSF 56k HSFi Modem [COMMUNICATION_OTHER] (vendor:14f1 device:2f00 subv:13e0 subd:8d85) Try going to Install Remove & Update Software and search for Conexant, HSF, or Linmodem (see 1st paragraph above).
  4. Yes, it can be an issue with any OS. From what I understand, it really depends on your ISP whether this is a problem or not. IPv6 for Microsoft Windows: Frequently Asked Questions
  5. From forum.mandriva.com: security bug in Konsole?
  6. Here is what mine is in 2007.1. I don't know much about the options listed, but maybe the following will help. Note that the second "windows1" is actually a recovery partition called "Rescue and Recovery" on my laptop. You will not likely need this section. timeout 10 color black/cyan yellow/cyan gfxmenu (hd0,4)/boot/gfxmenu default 0 title linux kernel (hd0,4)/boot/vmlinuz BOOT_IMAGE=linux root=/dev/hda5 splash=silent vga=788 initrd (hd0,4)/boot/initrd.img title linux-nonfb kernel (hd0,4)/boot/vmlinuz BOOT_IMAGE=linux-nonfb root=/dev/hda5 initrd (hd0,4)/boot/initrd.img title failsafe kernel (hd0,4)/boot/vmlinuz BOOT_IMAGE=failsafe root=/dev/hda5 failsafe initrd (hd0,4)/boot/initrd.img title windows root (hd0,0) makeactive chainloader +1 title windows1 root (hd0,1) makeactive chainloader +1
  7. One possibility is a drive geometry error. See the following: Hard disk geometry thread
  8. It would seem so. Yet I received the above information on good authority. http://forum.mandriva.com/viewtopic.php?p=423624#423624
  9. Your problem possibly could be related to IPv6. Unfortunately not all ISP's that are yet in compliance with IPv6. You can disable it and see if your performance improves. Edit /etc/modprobe.conf by adding the following line: install ipv6 /bin/true Test and see if it makes a difference.
  10. I believe your answer and solution might be in the following thread: How do I protect changes to resolv.conf?
  11. Note that if you use the "One" CD, there are a number of drivers and software which will be installed and may not apply to your situation. All of these will be in the update list. It was explained to me that this is because "One" installs an image of the CD on the hard drive. If you install "Free" or "Powerpack", then you get to choose what gets installed to some extent.
  12. Opera 9.50 beta 1 is my default browser. B)
  13. FYI, SeaMonkey Navigator "IS" Netscape Navigator. Just a different name and some enhancements. :D http://www.seamonkey-project.org/
  14. The following is a little beyond my realm, but perhaps it will help. Offhand it sounds to me like a problem with Grub. If you are using the Free version (not the One version), when you first boot up the DVD or CD, there should be some text that tells you how to boot from the DVD or CD but use the hard drive installation. At least it was like this with a Slackware CD that I used. I don't remember for sure with Mandriva. Anyway, what I had to do was type in some text that told the OS where to boot from. Once booted into Mandriva, you can possibly make changes to Grub or it's menu.list file.
  15. You can mark your thread as solved by editing the subject line in your original post. Re: drakconnect, you probably need to edit some of the files I mention in the following thread. At least that thread should give you some ideas on where to look. http://forum.mandriva.com/viewtopic.php?t=74691
  16. I love my Opera browser! I had to use it's zoom feature to read the text in the image you posted. The last line reads: "Kernel panic - not syncing: Attempted to kill init!" If you have any USB drives plugged in on boot up, that is one possible cause of your problem. See the following threads for some other things to look for: http://forum.mandriva.com/viewtopic.php?t=80436 http://forum.mandriva.com/viewtopic.php?t=75160 FYI, you can upload larger images to imageshack or choose not to resize the image, just optimize it.
  17. I don't know if the following thread I created will be any help to you or not, but I do have a ATI Mobility Radeon 9600 in my T42. I finally got suspend to RAM to work after some effort. I found the following general article most helpful: How to suspend and hibernate a laptop under Linux Here is my howto thread for a T42 ThinkPad: Enabling Hardware hotkeys on a ThinkPad T42 [i know you have an Acer, which is different.]
  18. On the Mandriva Club forum I have been reading that some recent update is causing this problem. Here is the thread... Problem with Ark and bz2 archives
  19. I used similar Canon drivers for my Canon PIXMA MP600 successfully. If those drivers don't work for you, here is a link if you want to try different drivers. http://www.linuxprinting.org/show_printer....on-PIXMA_iP1800
  20. See if your answer might be in this thread. >> How do I protect changes to resolv.conf?
  21. I just noticed that Thinkwiki says different things on different pages. The following page says to add the Options line to /etc/modprobe.d/thinkpad_acpi. Maybe thinkpad_acpi works slightly different than ibm_acpi? I do not have anything relevant in my /etc/modprobe.d/ directory. http://www.thinkwiki.org/wiki/Thinkpad-acpi
  22. Dunno. :unsure: Here you go: /etc/modprobe.preload # /etc/modprobe.preload: kernel modules to load at boot time. # # This file should contain the names of kernel modules that are # to be loaded at boot time, one per line. Comments begin with # a `#', and everything on the line after them are ignored. # this file is for module-init-tools (kernel 2.5 and above) ONLY # for old kernel use /etc/modules slamr nvram intel-agp hw_random evdev ibm_acpi /etc/modprobe.conf alias eth0 e1000 alias sound-slot-0 snd-intel8x0 remove snd-intel8x0 /sbin/modprobe -r snd-pcm-oss; /sbin/modprobe --first-time -r --ignore-remove snd-intel8x0 install snd-intel8x0 /sbin/modprobe --first-time --ignore-install snd-intel8x0 && { /sbin/modprobe snd-pcm-oss; /bin/true; } install usb-interface /sbin/modprobe uhci-hcd; /sbin/modprobe ehci-hcd; /bin/true alias eth1 ipw2200 ###### options ibm_acpi hotkey=enable,0x0100 ######
  23. I am guessing that if you enter the commands to start acpi and acpid in modprobe.conf, that should start the daemons on boot up. /etc/modprobe.conf is where I start ibm-acpi. I think you are right about KPowersave not behaving well. I had to turn off all the button events in KPowersave for things to work properly. I would think you could just uninstall KPowersave and use the utilities and scripts mentioned in ThinkWiki instead. I am not a Linux guru though, so these are just guesses on my part.
  24. I would guess your hard drive is on the way out. It is having problems spinning up. If you have smartmontools installed, you can check for smart errors. Smartmontools is available from the Mandriva repositories. http://smartmontools.sourceforge.net/ You can also run drive diagnostics from a floppy. If you want the links to the tools, I will post them.
  25. The screen brightness keys worked for me from the beginning, even before I started messing with anything. Take a look at the readme for ibm-acpi. It has a wealth of information. http://ibm-acpi.sourceforge.net/README I found the scripts in /etc/acpi/events and /etc/acpi/actions were already there when I went to look for them. I am not sure if they were there all the time or some program I installed put them there. I have installed: acpi, acpid, ibm-acpi, radeontool, tpb, and kima. I installed in the past configure-thinkpad, but I could not get it to work because I did not have the thinkpad module installed. I ended up uninstalling configure thinkpad. See if the following are any help. If you want any specific scripts, I can put them here, although I do not see any specific script files on my system to control display brightness.
