  1. @ your linux prompt: startx What does this do? If it fails and brings you back to the command line, you might need to fix your XFree86 config. Welcome aboard. :D
  2. How about? 9 GB /backup 4 GB / 5 GB /home 15 GB /storage 7 GB unpartitioned 4 GB for root is same as what I did with 9.2 and I have installed KDE, Gnome2, Apache, etc and only filled 1/3 of that, which leaves me with 2 1/2 gig left for more apps. The 15 gig for storage should make it easy to move files as a regular user (should be able to change the permissions on that partition... not sure how exactly). That leaves 7 gig that I would leave unpartitioned for now and save for any possible changes in the future, such as, a test partition for another distro, or space for a ftp server, etc.
  3. Maybe you should make a torrent file for it and release it that way
  4. Now that I got my system back in order, I was thinking of tackling something like this myself. BUT, I think I will wait some more. Yesterday there were like 248 megs of updates, today there is over 300, and who knows what will be there tomorrow.
  5. hmmm, both threads trying to get wvdial to work, both threads have same PPP daemon has died! message. AA decides to try fiddling with ppp scripts --- which happened to be linked on that other thread. Sounds to me that johnKFT's post was right on target. :? Thanks for responding johnKFT :D and hope you get it working AA, but we don't want to discourage any of the help user's offer here. Some of us need all the help we can get.
  6. Never mind, We decided to send it back and get a different brand
  7. Seems my LG DVD-ROM DRD-8160B has survived 9.2. I did not install from this drive, but I have used it with 9.2. If someone could pass this along to whom ever. But I would really like to know how the LG GCE-8525B makes out before I install it. It is a 52x burner I just got for my birthday.
  8. Super, thanks... I got it working in KDE now too :D It was just a matter of adding an applet/panel called "taskbar" How embarrissing (But come on, the taskbar was still there, just not doing its taskbar thing) Maybe mom will be OK with this release afterall... as long as she don't have one of those LG drives. Now I understand james' post and gotta check out that GNOME-taskbar gdesklet thingy
  9. AHH-HAA, I think you two are on to something here. You did catch me in time before I tried to reinstall again  I have always been confused between window managers and desktop managers, but it looks like I am currently using bb in conjunction with gnome and kde this time around INSTEAD of icewm. Never realized how they work together before. I think my problem started because I only started this fresh install by selecting the bare minimum packages and added blackbox, thinking I could use this as a GUI desktop until I would add others such as KDE and/or GNOME. I figured it would tell me all the depends that it would need. This all worked fine until I found my application windows would dissappear if I clicked the minimize button. I am in Gnome now and have added Window List to the panel AND guess what? My stuff is back in the task bar and that minimize button does its thing again. So is this ok then... to use BB with KDE and GNOME ?
  10. OH FLUXbox ! Now gnome is doing it too. Went and changed the theme and now windows are going *poof* if I click on minimize. Looks like I do a complete reinstall for the third time
  11. good ideas anna, but: a) none of the kicker prefs seem to affect those functions (minimize, restore, close) B) same problem in other themes c: to reinstall galaxy means reinstalling all of kde (dependancies), which I have tried. Looks like I become a gnome user for now ... which ain't all that bad I guess  (gotta find a better theme/ icon set tho) My only other problem at the moment is with my USB card reader, which is recognized by diskdrake, but didn't show on desktop like I thought they said would happen. Need to investigate this more later. Wonder what package actually is supposed to control those functions of minimize, restore, close? thanks. PS: was really hoping this would be the one to send to mom to install, but there seems to be too many bugs yet
  12. OK, fresh 9.2 install, and I got past the menu bug, and skirted past the LG drive disaster, but I can not figure out what to do on this one. With KDE and Blackbox, when I click on the minimize button, the window just dissappears instead of dropping down to the kicker. Gnome is ok. the restore and close buttons work fine. I tried the 80 megs of kde updates, reinstalling kdebase and even tried tex's kde (which doesn't want to install in 9.2). Any ideas?
  13. I got the same crap in kde (new 9.2 install). What I did was start up menudrake and reloaded the user config and system menu and then saved each. This seems to fix whatever bug has surfaced here.
  14. To try and avoid confusion... You do not install those --- You unpack those archive files, which will give you the source that you will install from. Just double click that file to unpack the source files. This one gives you a folder named "mozilla-installer." Inside there is a text file with all the instructions, which is basically the same as here: http://www.mozilla.org/releases/mozilla1.5...tion.html#linux Any questions post back
  15. I think I agree with most that version 10 will be exciting because of all the new things, but I actually think I was looking more foreward to 9.2 because I wanted something rock solid with all the bugs worked out to install in my main machine. Too bad they don't take it one step further and release a 9.3 version to compare with Mac's 10.3 panther release. I think I have learned my lesson through the 8 and 9 series and will only install 10 in a test partition.
  16. http://qa.mandrakesoft.com/twiki/bin/view/...Main/Mandrake10 Was surfing for something and came across the above. Don't remember seeing this part of Mandrake's circle of websites, so I thought I would mention it. There seems to be some really good stuff there on how to make iso's and rpms, plus all the latest scoop on the different releases. Definately worth bookmarking the main page: http://qa.mandrakesoft.com/twiki/bin/view/Main/
  17. You may be right Steve. I was assuming along the lines of kwrite, kcalc, kmix, kate, and k3b. You are saying you don't have kdebase installed and can run k3b?
  18. Don't really know what was going on... but after several installs, uninstalls, and reinstalls, I think I got it under control. The new 1.5 package wasn't putting needed things where I needed them, so I ended up putting symlinks in for the flash plug in and a symlink in /usr/bin to point to the executable in /usr/local/mozilla. While doing all that, I installed the 1.4 version from the download cd's and found what it used for the "shortcuts" soundwrapper /usr/bin/mozilla and /usr/bin/mozilla -edit Which all work from the desktop now (I am still confused as to the original problem :? ) Probably could of avoided all this, if I would have settled for having my pref's tucked inside root's install folder, but no... I had to have my own user saving my own prefs in my home folder. Anyway, problem solved, thanks again.
  19. GREAT ! and listen to peeps, such as bvc. x cd roast is a good choice. Don't fiddle with any of those settings till you get things backed up. Keeps us posted. :mystismiles:
  20. My favorite is k3b. But you need to be running KDE and I know your running fluxbox. Some of those cd burning apps probably need gnome to run properly. What desktops do you have working ? Guess we should pick the best burner app possible with what you have running. Is a kde or gnome possible with your machine? This may make it easier to get you burning your data.
  21. Looks like this should work: '/usr/local/mozilla/mozilla -editor' but it doesn't. I get this error: KDEInit could not launch '/usr/local/mozilla/mozilla -editor' I can click on the run as another user option, but then it starts as root, and I don't think I want it that way.
  22. scoopy

    LMule wont start

sometimes starting a problem app using the terminal will point out the problem it is having. Try using command imule and see what you get.
  23. CF card reader, Zip drive, or other devices attached ???
  24. lol Me... tux... I don't think so. I blame the dog.
  25. Maybe you could let us know what your trying to install / update and we could build your own local rpm file source where you could get the needed files one at a time (for now till the mirrors clear up). Members here could help figure out the depends and what all you will need to install what your trying to.
