  1. Even more curious. The last release candidate of PCLinux works, but the final does not! I usually have 2 hard drives to work with, but I cannot logically understand what the difference is. I have tested the chipset and processor with bench tests, but no errors are happening. It feels like a hardware issue to me. I guess I just need a new computer! After all, if it will just run windows, what good is it?
  2. Sadly, this note makes perfect sense. I also wish to reiterate the comment about acting like a corporation. In the business world, the customer drives the business. By that I mean that the stuff developed and marketed by any business is tailored toward customer needs. The only company where this does not apply is Microsoft. {smirk intended} I actually expect better of GNU/Linux organizations, who should be changing the tech world in a positive direction, not emulating Microsoft.
  3. I have used Mandriva since 7.0 I remember when Texstar was active here, and I used his kde rpm's all the way until he began to develop PCLinux OS. I am saying all of this to set the stage for my latest geek experience. My old windows hard drive failed recently. Not having any money to replacxe it, I took my 160G drive that was full of various Linux distros and erased it for windows and Mandriva. Both Windows and Mandriva installed fine, but Mandriva would not launch. I reinstalled several times with various switches and could not get Mandriva to launch upon reboot. Interestingly, neiher would SuSE or Kubuntu launch. PCLinux worked. I can't explain it. At any rate, I have a release candidate, so now I am going to upgrade it to the new release.
  4. The latest release of this un-named software giant.... oh bunk! Vista has turned into a major botch (predicted by those who know) I have noted with great interest that the PR machine is in full swing. There is no fixing Vista, but PR is the answer. The tech world still needs to watch out for "safe computing" which means that hardware will only work with windows. SAVE THE BIOS! Just because Redmond stopped talking about it does not mean it has gone away. IMP, their cooperation with linux is merely a way to head off their next big development, no bios required. All of the big developments are about them, not users.
  5. A while back, anna (Chris) came to our forum and we all got to know each other. But then anna could not be here as often because she was developing a live cd, back in the days when Mandriva was not really on that road yet. But in true open source style, MCNLive has been developed based upon Mandriva. When anna asked for our help with a user board, we thought it was a great idea. So we have offered a forum for MCNLive. They currently have a Dutch board, but would like an English speaking board which they can count on. So we are gladly working with MCNLive. Enjoy! 6. ZDNet has articles today concerning this. It is no longer a rumor.
  7. What is you hardware? When you burned the download, did you check the md5sum?
  8. You can shut down by typing "halt" in a console. You can also shut x down if you launched from a command line session by hitting ctrl-alt-bkspc. Let's check the xorg.conf file. Boot up, login, su to root, type "mc" and navigate to /etc/X11/xorg.conf Toward the bottom of this file, which video driver is being used?
  9. Download One and install it. You can choose wither KDE or GNOME Configure your urpmi sources and install what ever you need that is not on One. For example, you can install all the window managers if you want. They are all available from urpmi. I do not see a 4 cd set. But the above will give you all the Mandriva that any set has.
  10. That is very curious. I expected it to give an error! OK. Go into Configure Your Computer (MCC) and go to Boot. Select "Enable auto login...." Choose to boot graphic, but not auto login. Save and close. Reboot. See if it boots correctly.
  11. You have an Intel integrated video chip, which means it is mounted directly to the motherboard. Boot to the command line. Su to root, type mc. This is a nice file manager program that is easy to use. Navigate to /etc/inittab. Toward the end of the file, there is a section that looks like this: id:5:initdefault: Change it ti look like this: id:3:initdefault: Save and exit. Note the change from "5" to "3". Now, you will be able to boot in normal mode to the command line. Next, boot to command line in normal mode and type "startx". Report the errors here.
  12. I have not encountered this problem with SuSE. My first impression is that it is a typical windows problem rather than anything related to SuSE. I can't think of any reason a boot loader would interfere with suspend. You could try restoring the mbr and see if that "fixes" the problem. But I think it is windows that has a problem. Where does the suspend store the data? When you partitioned for Linux, did you inadvertently limit the space too much for suspend?
  13. Please look at your computer documentation. I went to the site, but could not tell what video cards they use. Or, you could open the case and have a look!
  14. First, do you get a command line login? What video card do you have?
  15. The listed repositories @ mandrivauser.de are what I am currently using. They brought both my laptop and desktop up to "2007.1 official" Unfortunately, EasyUrpmi is not going to be current until the official release, which was delayed for a few days. (Something about an error in the iso. The packages are all good.)

    noob needs help

I have always used ftp mirrors. I thought that rsync would be best if one were updating on a schedule with a machine that is live all of the time. Some mirrors are more reliable than others. For example, despite being in the US, the nluug mirror in the Netherlands has always been consistent in speed and reliability, even more so than mirrors here in the US.
  17. The Mandriva grub is graphic. I have not installed a new kernel with grub as the boot loader, but it seems that another entry could be made, pointing to a different kernel. While it does not have to be initialized like lilo, I think that Mandriva would offer a boot option, just in case something goes wrong. They would want to allow a user to easily boot with the old kernel. But I am guessing on this. I 'll find out soon enough!
  18. I think that, since Mandriva has switched to GRUB by default, that the rpm installing a new kernel should also modify the boot menu.
  19. mysti, I think if you go into the kde manager, there is a way to go to the kde default menu system. It gives a warning that there may be items missing, but I haven't seen anything missing yet.
  20. I guess I should say ndiswrapper works for me. :P But, the Mandriva rpm does not work. I had to get the latest version, compile it, and get it going from CLI prior to having a network. I do not have a problem with urpmi, and after learning how to set it up, still have no problems with it. But, certainly Yast and Apt/ synaptic work, as does Gentoo's method. I don't really see a speed difference, but them most of my playing is among rpm style distros.
  21. The only thing I have noticed is that, on my laptop, which I initially reported as a smooth upgrade, the Configure Your Computer disappeared. I searched and could not find a fix. So I installed the last iso, probably the one prior to the ones on the mirrors yesterday. I noticed nothing else wrong with the installation. Oh, ndiswrapper still works with Broadcom where thenew Linux driver does not, and you need to get version 1.41.
  22. To get your wireless working, you'll have to download the latest version of ndiswrapper (1.41) compile it and install it. If you need details, I'll post them.
  23. I am sorry to see that you are having this trouble. I sincerely hope that Mandriva communicates with you and makes good on their delivery. For many years I have used Mandriva. I first purchased a boxed version, 7.0, from Best Buy. It was on the shelf, covered with dust. My request for service, as they promised with one year support, went unanswered. I have never received any communication from them. This board, two versions ago, is why I still use Mandriva. Mandriva is a good distro. It is not as esoteric as some would like, and it is not as "geekish" as others would like. Mandriva has worked on a nice gui since version 7.0, which was their first version that had a graphic installer. Mandriva is easy to use and easy to support. I still like the distro. Mandriva has spent some time choosing to ignore aspects of customer service that are considered fundamentals here in the US. Friends in France have suggested that there is a cultural thing in this, and that it is not really bad business. There are Mandriva employees who come here from time to time which are genuinely interested in improving this aspect of Mandriva. These folks are good people and are attempting to affect a culture in their company. Nevertheless, the fact is that getting them to listen to customers is a problem that should not exist but simply is a fact of life. I wish you the best. Mandriva does not pay any attention to us, either. Again, not a whine, just a fact.
  24. I just updated my primary partition on my pc via urpmi, and it performed the upgrade without any problems!!!!! Cool!!!!! 1059 packages were updated or replaced.
  25. I would try configuring these settings through the Mandriva Control Center (Configure My Computer) and have them start at boot time.
