  1. I am glad you bought yourself a new Audio card and got it working AOK. Just read your post after my earlier one and saw where you mentioned that it was a DELL card that came supplied. I remember seeing some time ago that that card is modified by DELL and the usual Linux sound drivers do not work with it because although it is called a SoundBlaster card it really isn't anymore just like the Winmodem fiascos. The recommended action was to buy a genuine card and you have done that anyways. Enjoy your sound.
  2. Hey there what gives with the "Australian Toilet" bit ??? I'll have you know I resemble that remark. :P
  3. I am rapidly coming to the conclusion that MANDRAKE is at fault here. I too have tried to get an Alcatel Speedtouch USB Modem working for 2 weeks now. (see my, plus others, posts on this subject) MANDRAKE is screwing things up in the USB area somehow and we are all led to believe that it is we who are doing somethihg wrong. On other websites forums I don't see anyone having any massive troubles with other Linux OSs or troubles of any significance involving ADSL USB Modems. Only with Mandrake. Nearly everyone seems to get to the same stage as I do, namely install seems to go OK but still does not connect. Considering that Mandrake has the deserved reputation for the best hardware detection and setting up OS, this is a cronic disappointment. It should be investigated and resolved immediately. Yet I also sort of get the impression that they do not really care about this issue because they really don't want to encourage BroardBand downloading as they see it as taking away from their packaged sales, despite the fact that many people like myself still prefer to buy the manufactured cd sets. I still had the same problem whether shorewall was installed or not and whether the firewall was activated or not so the problem does not seem likely to be in that area. I am also starting to wonder if the Australian suppliers to Telstra Bigpond have nobbled (at Telstras instructions on behalf of Microsoft) the modems to make them unworkable in LINUX. Since they are supplied as part of the ADSL deal and Telstra say the do not support LINUX then they could legally get away with it. I am currently here from my W2K os and using the latest Mozilla but have not been able to get Mozilla Mail working so I am stuck with that inept piece of bastardry called Outlook Express.
  4. I often think it is such a pity that more research is not being done to develop a method of detecting and tracking these kind of filthy scum. I know that they often use peoples highjacked computers but people who do not check to make sure that their computer is suitably protected should be charged for contributory negligence as well. I have no idea how these sort of things done technically, so can anyone tell me whether this effort was done by a windows type script kiddie or someone with linux knowledge? If the offending mongrel does get caught finally, I hope someone will work him over because the LAW certainly won't. At most he would only get a slap on the wrist. Cheerup Texstar.
  5. Why don't you try uninstalling ALSA, rebooting and then reinstall ALSA. Do it via the Mandrake Control Centre (MCC) . I have found sometimes that a program can be installed corruptly but not give any error messages and doing this simple procedure has often fixed the problem. I had an example of this with XMMS ( not the sound wrapper problem that has been covered in other posts) and it now works Aok. This is just an example. Also use MCC and go into Services and check that ALSA has been ticked to initiate at startup and then click on start. This is another spot that is often overlooked. Hope this helos.
  6. You didn't say what brand of HDD the 40Gb one is. If it is a Western Digital, then be aware that if you have it on IDE cable as the sole drive on that cable then the JUMPER PIN MUST BE REMOVED. Some other brands may also have this characteristic so you would be advised to check. On W Ds the jumper pin is only used when you have 2 Drives on the cable, either 2 HDDs or cdroms or a combination of both to determine which will be master or slave. It is usually unimportant which is master or slave except that on the Primary IDE cable, ideally the HDD that you plan will have your windows OSon, should be Master to avoid Windows problems. Linux couldn't care less whether the HDDS are master or slave. Cheers
  7. Well I have reinstalled Mandrake 9.2 and done everything everyone has suggested but it still will not connect. Each of the programs seem to install without errors but finally it says cannot connect. Yet when one reboots it gives a message of difficulty in disconnecting???? the USBCORE is in use ?? I have not been able to install the kdsl programme as it appears to have a dependency problem that I have not yet been able to work out (this is a tar and not an RPM). It does the ./configure but not the make part. Being from a fellow Aussie, I thought this program might be the answer but not yet. Will keep plugging on. Bloody hell it's going to be great when this problem is solved.
  8. Hello Brancalessio. Well did you finally get your DVD player to work??? If you did then please let us know and what the solution was. That is the only way we know whether any of our advice helped and which of any of the advice did the trick. If it did help then this can be helpful to others in the future. Cheers
  9. So we are finding more members who are unable to setup their USB ADSL modems. For a while there, I thought I might have been about the only one. Please keep trying, all you great helpers. I am covering every single bit of advice and trying them all. I am currently setting up Mandrake 9.2 again to see if I can install the modem on it. Ah well back to try again. Cheers.
  10. Stevieag and Darkdelve your gifs are excellent. Darkdelve, your gif message is extremely important. Cheers all.
  11. WOW. And thanks heaps to everyone now buying in to this problem. So far I have tried everything that has been mentioned by ALL you very kind people but still no success. I am also still getting the same closing down to reboot message (as shown in my post) which also still requires hitting RESET on the machine to be able to proceed. I had intended to set up Mandrake 9.2 on a separate partition but this (second) hard drive has decided to give me grief. ( It seems the first 8Gb is stuffed and whether trying to use the Mandrake steamroller or Partition Magic, it continues to show the first 8Gb as used and containing data no mateer how many times it is reformatted......a real pain in the asre {yes, a deliberate mispell}) on top of my 21month old ASUS burner deciding to die. I have just got hold of a new LG burner ( yes I checked that it will be ok in Mandrake 9.2 ) and installed it. Have not used it in Mandrake yet though. I still keep coming back here to check if anyone has any additional ideas. LET ME SAY I CANNOT THANK YOU ALL ENOUGH FOR YOUR WELL DETAILED AND FAIRLY EASY TO FOLLOW SUGGESTIONS. I AM NOW A LITTLE MORE USED TO THE COMMAND LINE BUT I REALLY ONLY MAKE REAL HEADWAY WHEN I AM IN THE GUI ARENA. SO THANKS A MILLION God how I hate this Internet Explorer and Outlook Express. It really is s**t Arthur, I will go and try your recent suggestion now and see how we go Cheers
  12. It certainly would have changed things. Your first post gave no indication that you had the regular Grip from Mandrake working and that you were simply trying to do an upgrade. I was going to try to help find you a solution but I am not going to bother because of your blase attitude.
  13. I am disappointed. You did not make that clear in the beginng to me or anyone else. What you are saying now is a completely different thing. I could have been using my time to try and find a solution for what is now revealed to be the problem. As BVC and many others have said time and again, please give us the full story of your problem.
  14. The file you are looking for is libopenssl0.9.7 and is on one of the CDROMs of the Mandrake 10 set. Just simply install the rpm by clicking on it and follow the prompts. When you have done, You will find that Grip will have no difficulty finding it. By rights if you had selected Grip as part of the original install it would have also installed this missing package. If you didn't do it then but did it later then I fear that is why you you weren't able to find the associated package. If you had used the Mandrake Control Centres Package Manager correctly it would have picked the dependent package for you automatically. If you are doing a tarball install of Grip then you have to read the install details far more carefully. If it is a tar install I think you will find that the libopenssl package will still meet Grips need. Please lets us know the results which way and don't leave us guessing. NOTE. urpmf would not find what you were looking for because it is not an rpm file, it is a small part of an rpm file. In fact nearly all files that are .so files are parts of larger files which may or may not actually be rpm files. Cheers. John I am not certain but I think you might be placing too much emphasis on the .4 part of the .so
  15. I would like to extend my thanks also spinynorman for your well detailed response here. I think it will be helping me to resolve my problem of connecting my SPEEDTOUCH 530 USB Modem as well. I accidently put my thread on this my problem in the Installation section. You can see it there and maybe add further comments that may help me. Could you explain for me please what you mean about putting ppp0 in /etc/shorewall/routestopped . Cheers for now and thanks. John
  16. Thank you Arthur for your response. Nice and clear and easy to follow (not at all cryptic) for an oldie such as myself to follow. I am in Windows 2000 (puke spit puke) and will now go back into Mandrake 10 to try your and others advice. I will definately post the results, be they success or failure. Cheers. John
  17. I am only going on memory here, but if I remember correctly libssl.so is actually created by the installing of another package that does not have a similar name hence the difficulty in finding it by most means. I too had that problem with Grip some time ago and I seem to remember I found it by opening an rpm version of Grip with, I think it was kpackage and seeing what its dependencies were. I am going back into Mandrake soon and when I find it I will report back here. Cheers
  18. Download the latest version of XMMS. I think it is 1.2.10 from memory. The Mandrake10 used the 1.2.9 ( I think the 2 is correct but I am only going on memory because I am not in Mandrake at the moment) The .9 version had the fault and it is fixed in .10 It may still only be in tar form at the moment on the XMMS.ORG website but it is pretty easy to install anyhow. Otherwise just right click on the XMMS icon and click Properties. Look for the word SOUNDWRAPPER and delete it but NOTHING ELSE. Then close out. You should see it being saved automatically. This should see you through till you get the updated version
  19. Why would you want to bother?? If you can already boot up using V9 or what ever, and successfully do your installation what does it matter??? There are more important things to worry and learn about at this stage of your LINUX association (being an admitted newbie), and having an answer to this problem? is not one of them. To a geek the problem? might be interesting to solve but that is about all. Just do your install and get on to enjoying your new OS. Welcome to the world of Linux Remember:- LINUX is your FREE Umbrella graciously donated by generous charitable citizens from under which you can still look out into the OPEN world and have shelter from the rain or scorching sun yet still go anywhere and see anything you like. Like an umbrella, you simply need to learn how to properly OPEN it and to CLOSE it, and like anything useful and valuable you need to look after it and protect it. When you no longer require it then you pass it on to someone else who can use it WINDOWS is your locked-in box room with only a misty covered porthole to try to see anything and you have to pay extortion money every time you want to leave the room or get a different room. Everytime you want a repainted room you have pay for a new room but the porthole doesn't get any bigger. Cheers. John.
  20. This looks remarkably similar to my thread on this matter. Mine is a version 530 ( which may only be the number used for Australian packaging). Please have a look at my post and leave a comment there as to whether is is the same. It certainly looks like it. I am sorry I forgot to mention that my post on this subject is in the Installation section by mistake and the moderators do not appear to have moved it yet. Also sorry to Moderators
  21. Hi BVC. Love your LOGO. Really nice bit of work. You have been busy haven't you ??? Cheers
  22. Hi all. I am using Mandrake10 I am now connected to Telstra Bigpond ADSL service. It works AOK on my Win2000 Pro OS. I have downloaded and installed the <speedtouchconf-20-03-2004> software and also made sure that <bc> is also installed. I have followed up on all the available data regarding the new kernel 2.6.3 and made the changes advised. The program proceeds easily up to the typing in of the VPI and the VCI numbers (obtained from the Windows setup) then the UserID and then the Password. After Typing in Y (for YES) and then ENTER, it proceeds through the rest of the install and then tries to make a connection at the end of which it says it cannot connect. I have also tried the install while using the kernel 2.4.whatever but still no luck. Because I installed onto Windows2000 first and noted that during the install, the installer wrote to the Modem I realised the Microcode was written to the Modem. Therefore I copied the alcaudsl.sys from there in Windows to be used by speedtouchconf as well. One thing I did notice during the late part of the install was that the program said the LEDs on the Modem would flash for approx 20secs but that did not occur. Further more, the POWER led, the @ led and the USB led have remained a steady GREEN throughout all of the time. When I reboot, I get the following on screen;- Stopping internet connection if needed: N_HDLC: line discipline unregistered Shutting down ADSL connection:FATAL:Module usbcore is in use [FAILED] [FAILED] Stopping portmap services OK Shutting down loopback interface OK Stopping hotplug: ehci_hcd 0000.00.10.4:remove, state 1 usb usb5:USB disconnect, address 1 usb 5-4:USB disconnect, address 2 ehci_hcd 0000.00.10.4:USB bus5 deregitered usb 2-2:new full speed USB device using address 3 At this stage it freezes and only using the computers' RESET button moves things along. It seems that I am connected to the internet and yet I am not. Can anyone from within Australia or for that matter anyone at all got any suggestions??? I hope some might have an answer. I feel almost "dirty" using "Internet Explorer" to send this request, especially after using Mandrake for the past year and a half as my ONLY internet connection. Cheers I must apologise to all especially the Moderators. I just realised that I have put this thread in the WRONG category. Sorry for the trouble. I'll get it right eventually. Thanks
  23. Hello AURAN. Where in the Outback are you resident ??? As you can see I am in Cairns, Nth Qld If you would like to contact me directly by email, I give the moderators permission to give you my E-Mail address. Contact me and I may be able to burn you a set of copies from my official printed set of 3 CDROMS and post them to you. I will also include a cdrom of the ERRATAS for 9.2 as well because these are necessary and important as the disc also includes the KERNEL Source as well, which was missing from the 3 CD set. Cheers. :D
  24. Hello. No one has made any mention of the importance of doing the following after installing all the appropiate packages. In a Konsole as root, type in the following :- ln -s /dev/cdrom /dev/dvd please carefully note the spaces shown then press ENTER. Cheers.
  25. BVC, hello. This is for you and your question of changing the colour of the Desktop Icon fonts in Mandrake10. Head for Look and Feel then Backgrounds. There you will see a new ADVANCED Options Button. and there you will see what you want. If you click on the two "Use sol.......... text" and also "Enable Shadow" you can get some nice combinations of font colour and font shadow colour. Hope its of use. Cheers
