  1. Anyone want to bet that the top brass that made this scandalous decision were not bought off by Microsoft ???. After all Microsoft has so much money floating around it is dead easy to make a buy off and get away with it. As usual the decision is not made by the technical people, who are soundly ignored and usually have good ethics and mostly could not be bribed. You can bet there will not be an examination of the financial status of these morons because fellow morons will make sure it doesn't happen. I just wish there was some way to lay criminal charges against these type of grey suits at a later date for sheer criminal fraud and criminal incompetence. That is one reason I like the Chinese solution when they unearth fraud by anyone of this type.........They take them out and shoot them. Too strong ???. I do not think so. Cheers all. John.
  2. No problem thinkliberty. I took no offence because I suspected it might just be a fun dig, hence my reserved reply. You certainly are right about the many "this versus that" flame wars that go on. That is why I almost always try to use or to give actual reasons for choosing one over another. Hi BVC. I did not know all that stuff was in there :woops: When you are on a post I am ALWAYS learning something but I often wonder if it all makes me any wiser. :D :D
  3. Ha Ha Ha . BVC it was you that convinced me about my thoughts about Grub when I read all your help posts dealing with boot loaders over the past year. Don't know anything about vi. I have only used vim for the Nvidia driver install routine. Also I only use the command line mode for installing source programs so I don't know a lot about command line either. However I get by and still have a good operating system that does what I want. Not too bad for a Great GrandFather huh. I sense you have been or are having difficult times at the moment. I hope things go well for you quickly. Cheers. John.
  4. Amen echylo. ChrisM you are always welcome to ask for any help you need. If I have some knowledge on your subject, no matter how little I know about it, I will try to help you and I am certain that goes for nearly all of us here. So don't be afraid to pose questions. We all started the same way. Your very welcome to our community here at MUB Cheers. John.
  5. Wrong thinkliberty. I am not an emacs user and I wouldn't know what it was if it hit me. I am simply one who follows a set of instructions that have been laid out by people who know a whole lot more about a subject than I do. Maybe you don't, but I am one who was trained to READ THE MANUAL FIRST and don't presume you ( meaning me) know. When an instruction says use vim then that is what I use. In another thread involving an NVIDIA driver install problem, (which you are probably alluding to) a poster had no end of trouble because he made what seemed a minor insignificant change to the procedure, namely using vi instead of the advised vim. I have NEVER had a problem installing or reinstalling the nvidia driver on my machine or two other friends machines which have different nvidia video cards. I do not think good luck had anything to do with it and I am not a trained and certified computer tech so I follow instructions exactly. Grub is rapidly becoming the default for LINUX OSs from what I am hearing. The fact that LILO has been out much longer does NOT make it superior, only older. It is not as user friendly as Grub but this would not matter to a geek who thinks user friendly is sissy woosses stuff. To them if it isn't difficult to use then it cannot be any good. Like most computer users, I like to use my machine for actual work and playing with it is only sideline interest. John.
  6. Again I agree with spiedra. Anything with .old is ignored by the system so you can leave it if you wish and it won't effect anything. Delete it if you wish but it can only be done from root and not from your account. Cheers. John.
  7. Thank you nocturnes for your answer it saves me from doing an unnecessary download just to experiment. Cheers mate. John.
  8. All that mucking around. Wow. I am glad I use MCC and use Grub as bootloader. It doesn't appear as pretty as Lilo but is a hellava lot easier to use (and far more reliable). When ever you select a new kernel to boot in to you must always check that the boot settings are what you want with that kernel. The system does not automatically apply pre-chosen boot settings to all kernel choices. Try adding some boot themes. There are some nice ones around and when installed you can select the one you want from within MCC ---> Boot Cheers. John.
  9. I agree with Spiedra. I think the :wq use is ESSENTIAL. It means WRITE and QUIT which I am fairly certain is NOT the same as "save and quit". After using the exact procedure as outlined by others and then going into my account and then using Konqueror to go to /X11 and looking for XF86Config-4, I notice that there is NO other forms of it such as "old" or such like but if any changes are made to XF86Config-4 for whatever reasons using an editor while in init 5 then a copy of the original is made and marked ~ and is thus ignored by the system but is available to be reinstalled if needed. Obviously if an original is marked swp then the system can still keep referring to it when it shouldn't . The safest bet would be delete the swap version and redo the re-edit of XF86Config-4 again, but properly, using the :wq at the end and see how it goes. What you are doing with your variation, even though slight, of procedure is producing this swap version of the file. I notice you use vi and not vim as recommended by the original procedure and reading spiedras' post which arrived while I was doing this one this is exactly why you have had all this trouble. Now you know why the procedure said vim and not vi. I use vim everytime and have never had problems because I did not and do not presume that variations of a recommended procedure are OK. I have been watching these nvidia threads for some time and have noticed that the vast majority of have been because the user has not followed the install procedure EXACTLY as recommended or have not made certain that their system has the Kernel Source of the same version number as the Kernel they are setup on. Cheers. John.
  10. Hello Spiedra. They have masses of stuff and it is added to daily and not with out of date or old material either. New releases are added within a few days of release. Have a look at their "unmetered site". You will be amazed. e.g. Latest Wikipedia .........2 parts each 6gbs You also get figures of download numbers as well and I am pleased to say that Mandrake has the Highest download of all the Linux OSs by far. Yes Telstra is very quietly giving huge support to LINUX users but obviously they can only do it for BroardBand users, only because of the size of most of the downloads. I notice that Optus Broadband is acting as a mirror for a lot of Linux stuff and that is good but not the same as acting as a mirror/source as Telstra does. Question ??? Do any other ISP around the world give this kind of service to Broadband customers or even dialup??? I would really like to know. Cheers. John. Thank you Telstra BIGPOND.
  11. Hello arctic. Actually there would be no need for a swap size larger than 500mb at all even if the poster went up to 1gb of memory because with such a large size memory the swap practically never, if ever, gets used anyway. I have read of many here at MUB who have 1gb of memory and NO swap space and have been running trouble free (memory wise) for ages. I also have 1gb of memory and only the token 500mgb swap and the next time I rearrange my partition sizing I am thinking of eliminating the swap all together. ( Although if I have a memory stick failure and have to continue using just the remaining memory stick then it could be a problem perhaps) I think the recommended 500mb swap is a good and practical one. By the way, Is that an actual photo of yourself or a pseudo???. If it is of yourself then it is fantastic to SEE another member . Cheers. John. (retired glamour photographer with 24yrs experience)
  12. Are you trying to install the Karamba theme without having made sure Karamba (the program) is already installed ??? If so then sure as hell you won't be able to install the theme since there is nothing to install to. Your intended helpers I am sure are assuming you have already installed Karamba. Comments such as "duh" about help offered will not win you friends here if you keep that up. We all try to help when we can and all help is voluntary. Cheers. John.
  13. Hello lxthusdan. I think you mean inittab. I don't think there is a initab. I have made a note of the hint. Thanks very much. Cheers. John.
  14. Just for starters there is KVIEW which can do at least those 3 things for you. I'll come back again when I have looked at the rest of the others on my system. Cheers. John.
  15. Hello everyone. Bigpond, Australias' biggest ISP has today placed the Mandrake10.1 3 disk set for PPC on its free (yes, free......not included in its customer download quota)( that is broadband customers only) download website. The 4 disc Mandrake10-OE has been there also for some months now My question is what is PPC and what would be the difference for the usual desktopper such as myself ??? Cheers. John. :mdk:
  16. Thanks spinynorman for letting us know about this security article. The article writer is one security EXPERT who should be taken notice of more often. Notice how he stamps on the statement made by a spokesman of a proprietary AV company. (Whose company is probably subversively involved in encouraging releases of Virus because it is good for business.) I have made a copy of the article so I can show it to others to spread the CORRECT message about anti-virus security. Cheers. John.
  17. What do you mean there is no radio box to disable ScreenSavers in Mandrake10 OE KDE ??? There is certainly is one in mine. Where are you looking ????. In mine I open KDE Control Centre ---> Look&Feel ---> ScreenSavers, and there it is ............"Start ScreenSavers Automatically". Just remove the x and you stop the kde ScreenSavers. It really is that simple, yes really truly. Or am I missing something here??? But I don't think so. Cheers. John.
  18. I suspect that you may have a Memory problem. If you have multiple sticks of memory then one of them could be on the start of its way out. I had a similar experience with a set of Corsair twinex. The freezes became more often at boot up and also started to occur while using the system until finally it would not boot at all. I tried each stick on its own and found one of the two would not work at all. Returned both under warranty and they were replaced with new (sealed as new) set and have had no troubles ever since. So try using one stick at a time and see if this isolates the problem for you. Often quoted memory testing is not particularly conclusive although it may be a guide. Cheers. John.
  19. I find it hilirious that someone dumped Mandrake10-OE because Firefox took 10 or so minutes to load. Since when was Firefox a part of Mandrake10 ??? It certainly was not on my CDROM set of 4 disks. I would have thought it would have made more sense to find out why Firefox dragged its feet. I am using Firefox 9.3 with Mandrake 10-OE and it loads in about 4 or 5 seconds so what is your excuse ?? I have not done any tweaks because I would not know how to do them anyway. Mandrake10-OE is without doubt the best Mandrake ever and I HAVE HAD NO SOCALLED BUGS since I started using it months ago. I have also put it on two friends computers and they also have had no trouble. For both of them it was their first experience with Linux and they love it. They hardly ever use their Windows now. lxthusdan, there seems to be something strange about the fact that you still cannot get sound. It must be your hardware, either on board sound or sound card. I just cannot believe it is a fault in Mandrake. The fact that it may also work in Windows or any other OS doesn't mean a thing as you know. (you have helped others for a very long time so I know you have more than many peoples experience) How about PMing me and give me a detailed rundown of the gear you are using and a step by step list of what you have done so far. Keep it non technical and it can be as long winded as you like (in fact preferred) then maybe I can suggest a few things you could try. Who knows we may come up with a solution together and if we do then we can post the results here for the benefit of others.
  20. It seems I am not the only one who thinks this was a time waster from a possible troll. My comment was based on his reaction to previous posts offering to help him and his negative response. It was not made on the basis of just his first posting. Sure I had my problems with 9.1 and described it as a lemon but I stuck it out with Mandrake with great thanks to everyone here at MUB. I have always appreciated Gowaters support but I have also valued BVCs support as well although I must concede he has a more forthright approach to things and that took a little time to understand. Cheers. John.
  21. It sounds like you did the fundamentally wrong thing of installing WinXP AFTER installing Mandrake . You MUST always install XP first and after it is installed then you must immediately Defrag it (yes even straight after an install) before you can even consider installing Mandrake or even attempt to try using Mandrakes install to partition the drive. It is actually preferable if you can get your hands on a copy of Partition Magic and use it to create your partitions. A trick I often used with Win 2000 Pro was to use it to create all the various partitions I wanted and when it completed its install, I would only format the extra partitions while in Win2000 that I wanted to be used by Win2000. Sure the rest would still show up in Win2000, but only until I installed Mandrake on those remaining unformatted partitions that were left. I would presume the same could be done with XP. I would also urge you to to use GRUB as your boot loader. Even though Lilo has a glitzier style, it is more prone to screwing up the MBR and thus requiring remedial treatment to gain access to XP. Grub is also easier to edit later and does not require reinstall as does Lilo. All round it is easier and in my opinion much more reliable and stable. Cheers. John.
  22. I find the neoyeo post very odd. He IMMEDIATELY assumes that Mandrake 10 is at fault because HE cannot install it properly. I have found 10 to be the easiest trouble free install of all Mandrakes so far, now using 10 Official edition. I don't think he wants a solution to any socalled problems, he just wants to diss Mandrake. Well mate you are wasting your time here if that is all you want to do. If you really want help then most of us are only too willing to help. As the old expression goes "Ask and you shall receive" if you do it politely of course. John.
  23. lxthusdan is perfectly correct. Many seem to have forgotten what PCI means. It means "Peripheral Component Interconnect". That is what a Video /Graphics Card is, a Peripheral Component Interconnector which is to connect the Moniter, (which is also a peripheral Device,) to the Computer. The AGP slot is also a PCI slot but the only difference is that that particular AGP slot is dedicated to one particular purpose whereas the other PCI slots can be used to connect any number of other devices to the Computer. lxthusdan is correct in calling it a specialized PCI slot but it is a dedicated slot, dedicated to interfacing with Monitors exclusively. This is the reason it has become very practical to incorporate so many advanced functions into the graphics cards to the point that they are themselves mini computers and so relieve a lot of the load from the CPU. Efforts to change the title of the detection of the slot as AGP is basically wasting time and effort to achieve NOTHING that is not already being obtained by the detection system, especially when there are many more important things to worry about. As the good man said "What is relevant is how the pipeline is utilized, and that is a driver issue. The nvidia driver will properly utilize the advantages of the agp pipeline, whether it is called agp or pci. Cheers. John
  24. Hello Pepse. Sorry I can't help you more with your latter Questions but you certainly have my greatest sympathy trying to install a PCI Graphics Card. One thing I did do is after I did the < :wq > thing, I typed < reboot > instead of < init 5 > . Maybe this was one of the subtle things I alluded to in my earlier post. I don't know, but it might. Last week I tried doing that PCI Graphics Card install thing for a Linux newcomer, since his board is a MicroATX with NO AGP slot. It was hell to install it in Win2000 but it works in a fashion ......screen blacks out for odd short intervals e.g.half to 3 secs but does not freeze or crash, which is really quite amazing for a Windows OS. In Mandrake10-OE it freezes if too much activity such as copying from a data CDROM into a partition. The system ENTIRELY freezes so requires a complete machine RESET restart. I am going to download the precise LINUX driver for his PCI Graphics Card and install it for him now I feel a little more confident of being able to do it. It is currently using Mandrakes generic nvidia driver. Keep plugging at it mate and you will get there. At least you are making a determined attempt to follow the suggested routine and I admire you for that. Cheers. John.
  25. It's funny how I can run Mandrake 10-OE and use the internet ADSL (orDSL) service via my Lan connection on my mainboard and yet you give up so easily. I am not even a computer geek but I have learnt by asking questions politely on this very MUB and got heaps of offered help. If you don't want to try to make the internet work for you via Mandrake then that is your loss and it means going back to the deFAULT Windows System again. How about giving it a further go ??? Cheers. John.
