  1. OK. Accepted. I do not hold grudges..........I am years past all that gumph. Not to say that I won't be wary though for quite some time. John.
  2. I am sorry spineynorman. I should not have made a reply should I. Just shut and and accept it same as you made me do on an earlier occassion.
  3. Yes I think we should leave it all to you, after all you have spoken and you know better than anybody else. I apologize for my effrontery for even making a suggestion or even for asking someone else for a bit of info from them for my own use. John.
  4. Hello ainsaur. Just out of curiosity, what make of MainBoard do you have. A lot of modern mainboards now include on board LAN so if yours does also then it would have the appropriate socket usually near the USB sockets. To activate the on board LAN you would need to go into the BIOS and look for the LAN reference and then set it to active. If you are lucky enough to have this on your main board you could possibly get a refund for you ethernet card. Cheers. John.
  5. Open MCC.....................> Network and Internet ....................> New Connection and just rerun your setup procedure through to ..........> Host Name(optional) and type in your new name and then follow through. It's that easy. It took me 1minute and I was able to verify my internet settings as a bonus. Hang on you had better forget about that. You have to do it using the command line or it means you are an idiot like me. Cheers. John.
  6. Hello te-tsuo. Thanks to your efforts, I have found, as extra information from my experimenting, that it is only necessary to DELETE ONLY THE LETTER <B> AT THE BEGINNING OF THE NUMBERS CONTAINED WITHIN THE INVERTED COMMAS. The numbers then seem to have NO effect because the Login background colour as selected in KDE Control Centre ..............> System Administration..........> Log in Manager is applied. There is no temporary flickering or anything, It just logs straight into ROOT without a fuss. Thanks and cheers. John.
  7. Open Mandrake Control Certre .............> Boot ........> Boot Loader ..........Select GRUB in "Bootloader to use". Select ....../dev/fd0 in Boot Device. Insert a blank but formatted (fat32 ) floppy disk. Put a "tick" (check.....in USA) in ...Force no APIC and also ...No ACPI. ..........> click NEXT then finally check that you have your Mandrake as default.......it should have a * at the end of its title and finally click on.............FINISH. When you do this it will automatically install the bootloader on to your floppy. Then reboot using first a win98 boot disk or the Mandrake No.1 CDROM to enable restore the MBR. When you do this the machine will automatically boot into Windows and from then on whenever you want Mandrake you will need to insert your Mandrake boot up disc. It is a lot simpler using Grub than using Lilo. Cheers. John.
  8. He He He. :D :D :D :D Well I'll be "googled" that is a lovely "family". Now your secret is out. Cheers. John
  9. In fairness to both KDE and Mandrake it must be remembered that KMENU is intended for ALL Linux OSs and not just Mandrake so it is not fair to expect the KDE Menu to contain Mandrakes excellent tools. On the other hand I also found the excellent Kmenu Updating Tool which when scanned, found a heap of programs, including MCC and a whole heap of Gnome and other stuff (e.g. Mozilla), that one could then choose to install into the menu. Cheers. John.
  10. I have a Speed touch 550 and it has both USB and LAN ports so for my 1st computer which has only Win2000 on it, I use the USB connection on the 2nd computer (My main and mostly used) which has only Linux on it, I use the LAN connection an it works perfectly. Maybe you can do the same. The USB method to a Linux computer is still a real dogs breakfast (trial) but the LAN method is a dream of simplicity and ease. The Win connection is easy either way If yours has both ports then try my idea. Cheers. John Sorry Moderators, Forgot that i had already posted this reply. Could not find a way to delete the PREVIOUS post so please feel free if you wish you can delete it for me. JB
  11. neen sollars.....................Shropshire ..........England UK Cheers. John PS. Very nice family Photo. Great to SEE you all and welcome to MUB. JB
  12. Hi RONAN. Please give it up, you are only preaching, not contributing, by carrying on. As BVC says we CHOOSE to go into root because we accept the risks and this is emphasized in all the posts we make. BVC has made more HELP posts on MUB than just about everyone else put together. He ALWAYS made the point of saying enter root at your own risk. If that is not a strong message to newbies then I do not know what is. I echo bvc s' other points as well but he doesn't need me to back him up to validate them. Cheers bvc. John.
  13. I just checked mine and it is DHCP also. Do not know what it means but it works on mine so that could be your problem as Roland pointed out. Hope it works for you. Cheers. John.
  14. That is why I did not follow on it . It was the subject ........Fluxbox, idesk, and backgrounds I remember now that I saw the title and read some of the discussion which I found confusing so then ignored it. This present thread is about Mandrake specifically and the te-tsuo suggestion is more direct. Non geeks like myself do not always realise that answers for other OS types can be applied to Mandrake. Now I don't feel so bad. :D Cheers. John
  15. Are you using the ADSL modem in USB mode. I could me a another occurrence of the ADSL-usb problem that has plagued so many Mandrake users, including myself. I resolved it very simply by using the Modems LAN facility to connect to my mainboard LAN outlet. Have never looked back. It is cleaner and quicker to setup and virtually no data to be set in as part of the install. If you can, try going LAN if you are not already doing so. Cheers. John.
  16. Thanks arctic. Where exactly was that earlier thread??? I remember the one where the red wall paper was replaced for login or such like but never saw one about changing the colour that appears BEFORE the login wallpaper is placed. You have me really curious now. On the security of root aspect I agree with you wholeheartedly. Cheers. John
  17. Hello payasam. I just love your wonderful sense of humour. :D :D :D You have won me as a friend and if I can help you in any way such as sending you Latest versions of Mandrake full 4 cdrom disk sets in the future ( if they are a little difficult to come by over there) then just let me know. It will be a pleasure (not charity) to do it for you. I think the reason that your second reinstall of Mandrake10-OE went better is because you had already learned a considerable amount about Linux, and Mandrake in particular, that you made better install choices. Do not sell yourself short in that aspect. It could also be the fact that you setup your /home on a separate partition as recommended and since you had also fixed the icon setting problem on the desktop, then that setting would have been retained in /home during the reinstall. Cheers for now. John.
  18. Thank you my very good friend. Cheers. John.
  19. Hello Ronan. We all should know the need to be careful about being in ROOT. But some of us are also quite bemused at the almost paranoid concern by others for OUR OWN COMPUTERS. I am like our good friend BVC ( and I mean that) and many others in that we accept that root is a place to be careful in but we are not terrified to be in it or careless in it. I personally do not find the Command line easy to use for other than installing some tarball source applications. So su..ing in a console is not a personal preference for most other things. Going into root and doing what I want to do in graphical mode is my choice........I do what I want to do and then I exit.......no fuss, no bother. I am thankful for this threads original poster, te-tsuo, in informing me where I can make this kind of change. I have been trying for ages to change the "fire" red to something different that still subtly reminds me I am entering root without being visually blasted with a red screen. te-tsuo, I just hunted to where you recommended but am not sure what changes to make so could you please give more detail for one who is not a programmer but can follow instructions competently??? Cheers. John.
  20. Hello payasam. MUB.... Mandrake Users Board This very website. While I use spell check to try to make sure that I don't misspell, I do not think to judge others on not doing so. Since I am a two finger typist, I am much more likely to make typo errors. I know a lot of people are rapid typists and just accept typos as a non event. Great talking to you and seeing you . Cheers mate. John.
  21. When you do the reinstall of the NVIDIA driver it will automatically ask you if it can delete the existing driver (whatever it is) and then install the new driver. So do not worry about trying to uninstall the old driver yourself. Cheers. JOHN.

Hello aperahama (and a neighbour). Your recommended method is the one I have been using for over a couple of years now. IT IS THE SIMPLEST OF THE LOT. Good thing though about Linux and Mandrake in particular, is that I rarely ever have to use it so take that and shove it Microsoft (just could not resist the temptation so could not help myself )
  23. HELLO payasam. It is great to SEE you. I presume that is a photo of yourself. Very dignified if I might say so. A great big welcome from we MUBites. I hope we see you here often. It looks like the older generations (notice I did not say OLD) are joining me in making a presence. Cheers. JOHN.
  24. If you unticked ................ Printer then yes it will crash out. Just leave the printer one alone. It appears to have been a bug since Mandrake 9.2 and still has not been fixed even in 10.0-Official which is a bit of a disgrace really but not too significent. The printer icon will not appear on the desktop anyway so don't worry. The single click answer is for whoever asked for it even if you didn't. Cheers. John.
  25. What you have to look for to fix the single or double click mouse choice is --------> KDE Control Centre ----------> Peripherals -----------------> Mouse ---------> General. To have your cd burner and other cdrom devices on the desktop -----------------> KDE Control Centre --------------> Look & Feel ----------> Behavior --------------> Device Icons ...... then put a checkmark in the appropriate boxes for both mounted and unmounted then click APPLY. Done. Cheers. John.
