  1. So far I have only found Totem to play DVDs properly. ie automatically start and intro when the DVD is inserted and have full ease of use of the DVDs extras on its own menus. There was no flickering, noise bars, shimmering, frame jumping or distorted sound. I used to use Mplayer but it was a lot more finicky to use and often times you could not play the DVDs extras no matter how hard you searched the Mplayer menu. Also there WAS ALWAYS some noise bars in the picture as well frame skips. Sorry ARCTIC but I found Xine to be the most difficult and worst. Cheers. John.
  2. Sorry to disappoint you about your nieces response. Even a baby kangaroo cannot be kept as a pet except under extremely exceptional circumstances, and I mean extreme. Ask her to bring you a cuddly version but to make sure it is made in Australia so it is a genuine souvenir (too many are made in China). It seems that MUBers are on your case now. I wish you luck. Cheers. John.

    Kmail

In KMAIL...........> Configure Kmail ................> Network ...........> Receiving ..............> "Highlight your account" .............>General. There you will see an item titled "Store POP Password in configuration file" , place a check mark in it and click OK. Cheers. John.
  5. Hello buccy. What is your Mainboard. If is is using an ATI chipset then there is the great likelihood that although SATA is set in the BIOS as disabled, in reality it is not. ATI did a dirty little cutdown for a cheaper chipset and the ability to disable the SATA is itself disabled. Example of such a board with such a chipset is the ASUS A7V600 series. I know because I have one. None of the manual instructions tell you this. It was such a mess trying to get Mandrake 9.2 working after replacing a faulty mainboard with this one that I finally resorted to doing a clean reinstall. The reinstall showed my hard drives and cdroms as hde, hdf, hdg and hdh and everything installed AOK and ran AOK. I even ran a posted thread hereabouts asking about this but no one seemed to know much about it so I ceased worrying about. Later I learnt that my Mandrake was always looking for hda, hdb, hdc and hdd originally, and I did not know enough how to change fstab and other places to get it to work. When I got my new mother board (ASUS A7N8X-E-Deluxe)I had the same situation all over again but in reverse. However I decided it was easier to do a fresh reinstall but this time with Mandrake10-CE (have since gone 10-OE). I have the A7V600-E installed in a small box with old hardware which has only WINDOWS 2000 Pro on it and it runs fine as is. I hope this long ramble is of some help to you and others. Cheers. John.
  6. For starters have you gone into the BIOS and set Plug&Play to NO or DISABLED ???? Also while in the BIOS, have you set your CDROMs to DMA ???? The first is extremely important and the next one is fairly important. See how this goes for you. Cheers. John.
  7. I see you hurting payasam but I know nothing about StarOffice and very little about its mate OpenOffice so I cannot help even a little bit. I am sure someone will get to you soon. Cheers. John.
  8. Is it also correct that ......... :wq ..........also equals write and quit and can be used as well as ..... :x ??? Cheers. John.
  9. Then K3B are using the word CLONE incorrectly because if it is NOT making an exact replica of the original, then it is NOT. repeat NOT making a clone. It does not matter if the word mistake is made in the backend, because if K3B choose to use that backend then they have their own responsibility to correct the word error in their front end. The correct meaning of the word CLONE has nothing whatsoever to do with Micro$oft. Therefore they (K3B) should change the word to reflect what it really does. This mistake is the obvious reason that myself and countless others have had difficulties when using "clone" for nearly 12months. We usually put it down to ourselves making some form of mistake when all the time we being mislead by the mis-use of a word which did not do what it said. Thanks once again ANNA for enlightening us all here. I hope the K3B team take this complaint seriously. It is already the most superior burning software in the world and fixing this kind of mistake will make it even more so. Cheers. John.
  10. A clone usually means AN EXACT REPLICA OF THE ORIGINAL. So regardless of the format of the original disc, the burner should make an exact replica. The fact that you made a clone of the original disc means that it should play the same as the original. Did you check that the original plays in the machine that you have tried to play the clone copy ??? I suspect not. John.
  11. I have experienced that too after trying to upgrade to a newer kernel AND its matching kernel-source. The ksplash was the worst problem because you could not get past it to get into root or account to try to fix anything. Yes, I know that if I used the command line I would have been able to get in but then what the hell do you do. From thereon it would be like reading hieroglyphics. Got the same problems with the same items you mentioned. Tried for 2 days to resolve it but finally dumped it and fresh reinstalled Mandrake10-OE successfully and to hell with upgrading the kernel. I'll just wait until the 10.1 OE is out instead. My Mandy works perfectly as is anyway. Cheers. John.
  12. Thanks for the info Sarissi. More notes for my notebook. Cheers. John.
  13. I am using an Epson Perfection 2450 Photo Scanner and it works perfectly with my Mandrake10-OE. Cheers. John.

    Disaster

Hello my very good friend. I think the trouble also now occurring in Win98 is a pointer to hardware problem. In order of likelihood I think it could be 1. Memory. If you have dual sticks of memory then try each one on its own in turn. 2. Hard Drive. You are right about the DMA part of the message being ominous. 3. Mainboard. Possible but least likely. Let us know what you find out about the Memory aspect first. Cheers. John.
  15. Just glad you found your mail OK. Now I don't feel bad. :D :D :D Cheers. John.
  16. Mate I feel pretty bad to have been part of your now problem too so don't beat up too much on yourself. I'd hate to count the number of times in my life that I've jumped first and then looked. i"ll try installing Thunderbird and see if I can come up with something more positive. Cheers. John.
  17. I hope you looked in the file or folder before deleting it. I would have assumed you would have checked it out first BEFORE deleting anything. If the in or out mail was not contained in there then it is possibly in a .Mail folder similar to what Kmail does and should be recoverable. Generally something like . <application name> only contains settings and are generated the first time you open the application. I really am surprised you deleted before checking. If you only deleted a file then you would not have lost your mail but if you deleted a folder then you may be out of luck. When you try ANY deletions it is always worth considering sending it to the Recycle Bin first just in case (as this one) the problem is not solved and you can then retrieve it. Anyway see if there is a .Mail folder. Please remember it was only a long shot suggestion and not a recommendation. I hope you have luck. John.
  18. Hello Sarissi. I hadn't heard that before. I am running an AMD3200 and have never had a problem. Or is this specific to the AMD3000 ???. How does the CPU cause the problem with the boot loader??? Cheers. John.
  19. Just taking a clue from another poster in another thread. I don't use Thunderbird, I use Kmail instead, so I am not sure if there is a .thunderbird folder in your account (i.e. a hidden file). Look for it and delete it then restart Thunderbird again and it will create a new folder/file. See if that does the trick. Cheers. John.
  20. Hello scoopy. I am not sure that is quite what he means. I think he wants to morph the 2 face images so that he comes up with a totally new image. I know what you mean by overlaying and merging, and in the GIMP it is very easy, but it is not the same thing as morphing and as far as I know there is no morphing ability in the GIMP. In the Windows world there are a small number of morphing programs but none contained in Photoshop, PhotoImpact or PaintShop or other such programmes as far as I know. If anyone knows of a morphing program in the LINUX world then please let me know. Please correct me if my perception about what is wanted is incorrect. Cheers. John.
  21. Sorry illogic-al, But he said his AMD CPU is a 1.2Ghz , he did NOT say it was an AMD1200. Therefore it is easy to see why his desktop is much faster. I think, from memory, an AMD 1.2Ghz is around a 1600 or 1800. All the pre Bartons ran pretty hot so would not be as good for a laptop anyway. Cheers. John.
  22. I think you may have misunderstood me. I believe the layout concept is influenced by the French culture and the way of seeing and arranging things, in other words, the logic of doing things. And frankly that is one thing I am pleased about because I am getting sick of the US centric thinking of other OSs (of course M****$*** in particular plus Red HAT to name just two of the many). The developments may be done in English but the overall combining must surely have a French influence I had no, and have no, quibble with any of the French to English aspects at all. So my utterances were NOT at any time, a criticism of the French factor, in fact the exact opposite. Cheers. John.
  23. I see what you mean Floyd, about the limitations of the KDE Clock. I was able to set up a second clock for example to New York time but cannot set it for 24hr time or alternatively add AM or PM to the clock so as to readily tell if it was AM or PM there. At home in Australia I do not need that since I only need to glance my surroundings. In ......Country.......Region............Language.... I have my local time set for AM/PM so it also does that with every other clock even though those clocks can have different locale times. And also there is no way to tell which time is for what region. Yes of course one can make each one look visually different but then you still have to remember which is which. I will try out your idea and see if it suits me too. Thanks and cheers. John.
  24. Did you go into the BIOS and make certain that "legacy support for usb devices was enabled" ??? The wording may not be exact but will be along those lines. It is usually set as default......... DISABLED. Also make certain that Plug & Play is also Disabled Hope it helps. John.
  25. There is a possibility that your firewall is not set up correctly. Open up the Mandrake Control Centre (MCC) ...........> Security ..................> Firewall ............> and initially put a tick (USA=check) in ...........> FTP Server and also ...............> Pop and Email Server .........> click NEXT and in ..........> NET Device select ETHO from the dropdown menu, and finally click ..........> OK. Hope it helps. John.
