  1. There is a new beta and this time it doesn't only install, you can actually use it........ Good job Skype. Homepage
  2. Do you just get a black screen or do you see a cursor blinking and a login prompt? If the latter log in as root (type root and give a <enter>) and your root password. Then type XFdrake (notice: capital letters XF). Then choose setting that fits your screen. If you get a completely black screen choose at the lilo screen 'linux failsafe'. Login as root, type 'init 3' and then type XFdrake. Good luck. edit: when you have choosen a setting, log out as root, login as your normal user and then type startx. edit2 (I keep forgetting things :( ) Logging out as root you do by typing exit. Logging on as normal user is by giving at the login prompt your username and password. That's all I hope....
  3. Or you can use the Mandrake Control Center: Network & internet-->Internetacces Your videocard is an ATI and its linux drivers are not as good as its window drivers. When you are going to buy a new card consider going nvidia. They have much better linux support. The eth0 thing: many people have reported the same thing. I think the only thing that works is turning of 'hot network plugging'. In the MCC go to network & internet-->network configuration-->the tab 'options' and deselect hot network plugging (translated all this from Dutch so the names might be slightly different from what you see)
  4. Quick answer: look in the config (/boot/config) :)
  5. I got the OfficeJet G55. I doubt if they are still selling that model but newer ones should work just as well. http://www.linuxprinting.org/show_printer....P-OfficeJet_G55
  6. For me Google found only people who couldn't get the thing working so I'm afraid it won't work with Linux. If you sell it, buy a HP all-in-one. They have good support and should work out of the box: printing, scanning copying. (at least mine did :) )
  7. I doubt there are many people on this board who have both an AMD64 and a P4 xxxxx. If you want comparisons I think you would be better off at a site dedicated to hardware reviews. Good luck.
  8. I'm no kernel wizard but I believe it's a problem with the filesystem ext3. Maybe you should build in into the kernel, not as a module. Good luck
  9. http://www.iosono-sound.com/eng/index.html This is a topic on /. today. Might be of interest to you :)
  10. I believe mythgame is only a frontend for xmame and others. For others I don't know but xmame should support playstation 2 pad support (I had a look just now in the makefile and it's supported).
  11. Have you tried adding a nameserver in your /etc/resolv.conf (nameserver 193.67.79.39)?
  12. I googled a bit and found http://www.mepis.org/node/view/814 Look for a post by someone named Boris (the title of his post is International Keyboard (Russian)) Good luck
  13. Use the Mandrake Control Center for this. I think only root can switch keyboard layouts and the KDE control center doesnt allow this. Good luck edit: forget what I said: in the KDE control center select Russian (ru), then 'press add>>>>' and then apply, that will do it. I got the little flag now in my systray ad by clicking it I can swich between us international and russian. He.......... I learned something today :)
  14. /home/darkelve/bin should be in you PATH. /home/darkelve/bin/folder is not in your PATH. So just link the app/binary to /home/darkelve/bin (ln -s /home/darkelve/bin/folder/azureus /home/darkelve/bin/azureus and it should work. Good luck
  15. 1: Mplayer plays everything including xvid 2:There are 2 well known programs that do what you want: Mythtv and Freeevo. Both come with Mandrake and can be installed with urpmi (taking care of all the dependencies). There is no need to use another distro 3:Go with the Hauppauge wintv pvr250/350 (about E150/200). I guess since this computer will be build from spareparts it won't be the fastest and both of these cards do hardware encoding (and the 350 comes with a TV out). You need that with a slow PC. 4:These cards come with a remote but it needs some effort to get them to work with Mandrake 10. (Mandrake 9.2 a lot less effort) Good luck
  16. The easiest way to update KDE 3.2.2 is by adding cooker to your repositories. However that is not the safest way. Cooker is unstable and it is possible KDE will not work. The best way is to download all the Mandrake KDE 3.2.3 packages from one of the KDE mirrors to a folder on your harddrive and add that folder as a repository. You could then install KDE with 'urpmi kdebase'. About the lock error I don't know but you could ofcourse kill the processes involved. Press in KDE ctrl-esc and look at what processes are involved and look up the PID numbers. Then open konsole, log in as root (because urpmi is a root process) and type 'kill <PID> <PID>' (where <PID> is the pid number) Good luck
  17. Yeah I know, I used to compile all the KDE Winows decoration/Styles from KDE-look before KDE had Plastik. I remember it took me 3 hours before I discovered I had to use --prefix=/usr before they would build. Ah those were the days........
  18. Sounds interesting (no pun intended). However, a PC is not the same as the cockpit of an aeroplane and I doubt there exisst a need (though people might ofcourse 'choose' to use it) for it. There are sure interesting things happening with the desktop. There's all this 3D stuff going on, real transparancy is around the corner and now this idea :). Who knows how we will interact with the PC desktop a few years from now.
  19. Oops... Go with Tymes advise... Read mine when you have errors during 'make'
  20. Ettercap probably expects libpcacp (.so???) at an other place then where Mandrake installed it. You can try making a symbolic link form the Mandrake installed libcpcap to where ettercap wants it. (ln -s /usr/bin/libpcap.so????? /usr/local/bin???????????/libpcap). Look in the error output for clues where to put the link Good luck.
  21. Try hdparm -d0 /dev/hdx (where x is the letter for the CD burner, as root). Then start k3b as normal user and try burning a CD. PS hdparm -d1 /dev/hdx, turns it back on :)
  22. No, but if you want to install multiple packages at the same time (because of dependency issues or whatever) you can download them your HD, put them in a folder and add the folder to your stable of repositories..
  23. Go to the KDE control center-->KDE components-->file-association. Type html in the searchbox and edit it. Konqueror should be on top (use 'up' 'down'). On the second tab 'KHTML' should be on top. and tick 'file display inbedded' (translated from Dutch, better look at the attachment to be sure :) )
  24. The package-name is usually a clue (xxxxxx-plf.rpm) and you can ofcourse select the 'media' you want to install from. (urpmi --media plf xxxxx)
