Sorry if this is a standard install on Mandrake or other distros, but its not on Redhat/Fedora. I needed to install this for my Unix class I am doing and I find it pretty neat. Here is a link for the download. http://kgraphspace.sourceforge.net/ Here is a screen shot of my /. FX

HP zd7010us vs the Toshiba P15-S409. The Toshiba wins hands down. I fought for a week to get sound and wireless to work on the HP and didn't get no where. Sound would not work no matter what. Wireless (broadcom) wouldn't even work with the Linuxant Driverloader. I even put in a Netgear pcmcia card and still wouldn't work. So I got upset and mad and whinned alot in chat to the point where I couldn't take it anymore and took it back for a exchange. The two are pretty much alike in specs. The HP had a P4 2.66, 512 meg ram, 64 meg nVidia 440 card, dvd/cdrw and 60 gig hdd. Sound was i810. The Toshiba is a P4 2.8 w/Hyper Threading, 512 meg ram, 32 meg nVidia 5100 vid, dvd dual format burner and cdrw with a 60 gig hdd. Oh yea the same sound card as the HP, but this one works. For the wireless it has the Arethos card which I am using the Linuxant Driverloader to fire it up. I do run Fedora which would load fine. MDK loaded but wouldn't use the entire screen. Deb,Knoppix,Mepis,Arch would all installl and download the base, but when it came to download the rest from a net install they would hang. Mepis and Knoppix, just wouldn't install. Now some of that is probably my problem, but I never had any problems before loading any of those distros. (except arch, which I will try here shortly. :) ) I just wanted to post this cause 1. I want to thank the peeps in chat for the help with the HP. 2. I really never was impressed with HP, but for some reason bought that one. 3. I am happy as hell I got the Toshiba. (thanks HJ) 4. I don't post here enough and I should cause most if not all here are helpful as hell, especially in chat. Most of the time I feel like a leech, always asking questions, but most of the time not knowing enough to give back. FX

Well.........For the peeps in chat they will agree with me on this. In the last week I have tried about 4 different distros. Suse,Debian, Libranent (same thing just about),Fedora and now Mandrake. I have started with RH9 when I started with Linux in Jun or Aug, somewhere around there, and it worked, just worked. Now with each distro I used in the past week, they ALL have their little quirks. I can only attest to two of them. Mandrake, I used 9.1 for a short period, and RH 9, but each of thier updates or next releases have some quirks. The others I use well I am not that of a linux guru, or have that much experience with them, so I will say that I think there are some things broke, and quirks in thoses too. Point is, each distro is gonna have quirks, things you have to tweak, maybe fix. Its just a matter of how much you can live with, how much you want to do to get it to work the way you want to. I don't think any distro out there can be installed without ONE problem or another to be fixed. Calling Mandrake a lemon is kind of harsh. Im not that big of a fan of it either, but gonna give it another shot here and see if I can live with it or not. If not I'll go back to Fedora. One thing I can say though, this board, and the #musb chat are the MOST helpful places I have been. FX

Well if you only new how many time I have reinstalled Mandrake. From switching between RH9 and Mandrake, then Fedora and Mandrake. Now Im getting the "public release" or 9.2 and I am gonna install that. Thanks for the response and I will save that page for future use, like when 2.6 comes out. :) FX

Updated kernel with MCC. I have never updated with MCC before. I have wth synaptic and RH and this seems a little different. Anyways I updated and when I tried to run gdesklets I got a "permission denied." In the terminal I opened it had my name in it, but when I run uname -a I get this, Linux gamer 2.4.22-21mdk #1 Fri Oct 24 22:43:28 MDT 2003 i686 unknown unknown GNU/Linux Also my beginning boot screen has Linux, linus fail safe, windows, and the new kernel. I had already removed the old one. Thanks for the hlep ahead of time. FX

My SB Live detected just fine, in RH 9 it did also. The Red Fedora apps button will go away if you chose a different icon setting, then log out and log back into X. Only complaint I have is removing XFree-Mesa-libGL to get the nvidia drivers to work right. Oh and the gcc32 deal before installing them too. Otherwise Im happy with it. FX

Use SMB or Samba. I just reset mine up last night when I installed Fedora. On your 2000 machine the printer should actually have a name that the pc gave it, ours does anyways. Find out what that name is. When you click on the samba printer deal another box will pop up and you have to fill in some blanks. Like workgroup, server and user and password. (user and password is the "admininstrators name and pw" for the 2000 box) Theres one more, can't remember. (at work on a windows machine) To help you figure out what goes in the blanks open up the help at the bottom of the printer config box. FX

Try going into .irc.freenode.net #fedora. They are yapping like crazy in there about it. Pretty good reviews so far. Cybr I am sharing your connection too, thanks. Ok went a little nuts on the smilies, sorry. FX

I used cups I believe to get the printing worked out. I did have a heck of a time as it would not print, UNTIL I went to the 2k pc and setup for unix printing. Go to............. control panel/add and remove programs/add remove window components/other network file printing services. In there you will see "unix printing services" or the likes. Check that, run cups and set that up and you should be good to go. FX

I downloaded it today and thinking of installing it on either my laptop or reg. pc. Has anyone done this yet and how is it as a permnant distro? It use apt so I figure if I wanted to get gnome 2.4 all I would have to to is apt -get gnome? It is KDE based isnt' it? FX

Im running RH with apt-synaptic and I find it SWEET!!!!!!!! Just go to freshrpms.net and download apt rpm and syanptic rpm. Install apt first then synaptic. When done look under system tools or settings (not sure exactyly and I am at work) find synaptic and drag to desktop. Double click, update like, update dist. and then proceed. All done and installed. Setting up the wife an account on my server for her. I wanted her to log into /home/my home, but for some reason it didn't work right, so I decided to make her own /home, well when I went to delete her "user" I ended up deleting "my" "me" "mine" /home. LOL Anyways if I look at the User manager I still have a User joseph with the home directory of /home/joseph. Is there a chance that its still there and if so how do it get to it? I tried to log in as "joseph" but says something tothe effect of "looks like theres a home directory but nothing will work, do you want to log in as root" FX
