  1. No module being in debug mode. ide-generic shows up as permanent, but this may be due to the local kernel. However, nothing changed here before and after new driver installation in this regard. But I noticed an amd64_agp module, which maybe wasn't included within the old 100.14.23 driver. Okay, let's blame it on the beta status. ;-)
  2. The procedure is as follows: 1. Prompt / Cursor being displayed; this may look like this: computer login: _ At this stage you have to enter your user login name. Do so and confirm with the <ENTER> key. At the next step you'll be asked for the password of that user name: Password: _ Now you have to enter the corresponding password; confirm with <ENTER> again. You are "logged in" to the computer now and may issue user commands. Three important commands are: mcc to adjust system settings (Password for superuser "root" needed here!) startx to start the graphical desktop (X Windows) su to enter superuser mode (Superuser password needed - aka root password!) After being superuser from terminal mode, you can either use mcc, then the graphics (GFX) module, or issue the following command directly, which will let you change vital GFX settings: XFdrake -----xxx---snip---xxx----snip-----xxx---snip---xxx----snip-----xxx---snip---xxx---- Could please someone from the staff make this short explanation sticky?
  3. I *could* imagine sth. like that being real, but then resulting of some side effect...
  4. Hi OLI, welcome to Mandrivausers! You should go for a recent 2008 or at least 2007.1 version. When comparing these, I'd recommend the latter for any new user due to the more ripe status. 10.0 is out of date. At the prompt you have to type the username you've chosen first, then your password. On steam games, I don't know, probably someone from the Games section... HTH, scoonma
  5. What's that for a letdown! After installing the new driver here, performance with glxgears dropped by about 12.5%. Okay, I know glxgears is not for benchmarking, but on the same hardware?!? Any different experiences?
  6. Hi nate, which method did you choose to install Mandriva? Did you install it after a Windows installation? When using different partitions for every OS your PC is hosting, a problem like this should not occor.
  7. Among the new features/bug fixes are: - Support for GeForce 8800 GT. - Fixed a problem with Compiz after VT-switching. - Improved RENDER performance. You can download the driver here.
  8. Is there any Mandriva rpm package within the range of vision? I'm feeling a bit uneasy with the actual version for 2008.

    networking

Hi Farell, welcome to Mandrivausers! Do you want to build a real cluster or just a homelan with 3 PCs?
  10. Hi Will, nice to hear your gfx card works now! On the networking problems, please browse the corresponding topics here (Forums / Advanced / Networking). Maybe you're already able to find the correct solution on your own. If not, it would make sense to start a different topic there. You won't need any Windows related files (.sys .inf ...). For a quick start, there's a Networking Module within Mandriva Control Center for Wireless devices. HTH, scoonma
  11. The black screen will vanish either to show a correct test screen after maybe 30secs (depends on hardware) or show an error message if left alone long enough. You can get along initially by selecting the generic driver named "nv" (don't know how it's called in the driver list, but should be displayed after selecting in final check). I'd recommend an adequate Xorg driver, however.
  12. I suppose the black screen is an opened X Server screen, but black due to an uninstalled or misconfigured gfx driver. The "underscore which does nothing" is probably a shell/terminal cursor. This is the place to try out the "startx" command scarecrow mentioned. Just type the letters (without quotation marks) and confirm with <Enter>. Note: You cannot get double gfx desktops by entering "startx" in different VTs (virtual terminals) as tty1 and tty2. So if you encounter a black screen first, try this key combination before giving any commands: <Ctrl>-<Left-ALT>-<Backspace>. If there's no success, you can try Mandriva Control Center being root user (Admin account). Login normally, then "su" to root (root password needed here!). You'll see a slightly different shell prompt. Enter "mcc" and configure your video card (will be auto-detected in many cases). Good luck!
  13. Just a rough guess: The different java installations could give rise to some path conflicts. I'd cleanly uninstall every java version which is not needed, then recheck. For serious purpose, the sun version can be recommended (though proprietary).
  14. Hi there, I'm uneasy about this remarkable Firefox output: Cutting log (size: 100133, max: 100000) It appears after starting the app from terminal window. Any ideas please?
  15. Hello Jose, you don't have to do this manual editing. It's more convenient by choosing Mandriva Control Center / Boot Options. New kernels do not pop up without reason. It's not bad to use them as soon as publicly available by Mandriva.
  16. A new Firefox version is available: Additional info and links can be found here (German), and here (English).
  17. Before spending 200 AUS$, I'd open up the phone and try to locate possible errors (corroded soldering points or strip lines). If it's broken anyhow, you can't do real harm. I'm suggesting this because I've been used to wash hardware (mainboard, keyboard after picking single keys off...) when it was expensive to clean from dust - not in a machine though - but if after drying properly with soft tissue and blow-dryer, there used to be no big problems - well, just on software level, but that's a different story. If your phone was working for a month from then, maybe the error source is elsewhere. Can't help on the router aspect though. Good luck!
  18. Sorry, but this is really weird. Why are you seeking for help when you don't trust more experienced users? Scarecrow's advice is top level.
  19. Hi Michael, welcome to Mandrivausers! Google is no valid repository for Mandriva. You should remove it.
  20. An EyeBrowser? Is this something to surf with or to paint one's face? Surfing on the eye - strange things happen these days...
  21. Yeah, good connections is half a deal! ;) With regard to marketing, I'm really different. It's not only semantics, but a different point of view. I'd never say the market wants anything. We're living in a cultural world. Thus demand for consumer products is being created, nothing natural here.
  22. Hm. You're sure this https://a248.e.akamai.net/f/674/9206/0/www2...-x86.x86_64.run does not build against kernel sources?
  23. Hi nyme, compiling the driver is no bad idea in that case. You'd first have determine your kernel version: Open a shell (terminal) window and type: "uname -a". The output will reflect your full kernel name. You'll have to install the corresponding sources for that kernel, either using urpmi or mmc/software. A recent ATI driver may work then. Download it and follow instructions. For any further questions, feel free to ask again. Good luck!
  24. I do not perceive human psyche and mind the way marketing gurus and some modern neuro scientists do. In fact, it is rather fluent than fixed, to the same extent the world has seen many different shades of civilization and still does today. If it were that simple and universal, it couldn't be influenced that easily by external conditions. This goes to geeks as well - who may be interested in fast and effective PCs rather than fast cars. However, literacy and education put them in a better position to reflect needs, motivations and market relations - if they decided to go that way ;). The statement "Linux is user based" is not only a statement of product image, but also reflects the very history of it's core: When Linus and others did invent GNU/Linux, they did not aim business, but functionality. We all know OS carrying a different approach. I must agree to the following: Ignoring users or business partners does no good for any company today.
  25. I'd subscribe that for many Linux users - but not for all - here in Germany. Marketing strategies which do not end up in lying would be considered zero effective and thus simply ridiculous. Everybody knows that so... OTOH, people who are used to do business have a totally different perspective. I assume the more clever ones know that they're basically lying when it comes to advertising and the like, but they consider it inevitable due to market competion. Linux as a primarily user based and targeted OS is in a difficult area of conflict here. If you do not have someone like Mark Shuttleworth in the background willing to spend large amounts of money, you'll have to compromise with both sides. I do not envy Mandriva officials relating to business strategy. But for their own interest, they should support (prospective) partners and/or resellers like Ian as well as possible, for sure. Share prices are totally unimportant to me - the whole stock market has gone crazy since long. This is where the real bubbles grow - they'll continue bursting ever after until some possible fundamental change.
