  1. I wonder would it be possible technically, for Mandriva to replace the graphical package manager with Synaptic (the package manager from Ubuntu)? It's a great package manager, easy to navigate and very fast. The copyright message in Ubuntu says it's copyrighted by Conectiva, so I'm guessing legally there's no problem.
  2. Here's mine, not very prety but at least it boots, cause everytime I install a new kernel things get messed up and the XP and Ubuntu sections are deleted and I still like to get nice graphical bootscreens running @1280x1024 but have no idea how this is done. timeout 10 color black/cyan yellow/cyan shade 1 viewport 3 2 77 22 splashimage (hd1,2)/boot/grub/mdv-grub_splash.xpm.gz default 0 title linux kernel (hd1,2)/boot/vmlinuz root=/dev/hda3 splash=silent vga=794 initrd (hd1,2)/boot/initrd.img title linux-nonfb kernel (hd1,2)/boot/vmlinuz root=/dev/hda3 initrd (hd1,2)/boot/initrd.img title failsafe kernel (hd1,2)/boot/vmlinuz root=/dev/hda3 failsafe initrd (hd1,2)/boot/initrd.img title multimedia 4GB 2.6.14.7 kernel (hd1,2)/boot/vmlinuz-2.6.14-0.mm.7mdk-i686-up-4GB root=/dev/hda3 splash=silent vga=794 initrd (hd1,2)/boot/initrd-2.6.14-0.mm.7mdk-i686-up-4GB.img title 2.6.16-rc6.14 kernel (hd1,2)/boot/vmlinuz-2.6.16-rc6.14mdk root=/dev/hda3 splash=silent vga=794 initrd (hd1,2)/boot/initrd-2.6.16-rc6.14mdk.img title linux-i686-up-4GB kernel (hd1,2)/boot/vmlinuz-i686-up-4GB root=/dev/hda3 splash=silent vga=794 initrd (hd1,2)/boot/initrd-i686-up-4GB.img title Windows XP root (hd0,0) chainloader +1 title Ubuntu, kernel 2.6.15-20-686 kernel (hd1,1)/boot/vmlinuz-2.6.15-20-686 root=/dev/hda2 initrd (hd1,1)/boot/initrd.img-2.6.15-20-686 boot title Ubuntu, kernel 2.6.15-20-686 (recovery mode) kernel (hd1,1)/boot/vmlinuz-2.6.15-20-686 root=/dev/hda2 ro single initrd (hd1,1)/boot/initrd.img-2.6.15-20-686 boot
  3. oh well, i´ll just continue gaming from windows then :(
  4. I´ve tried iso´s on fat32 and ntfs; i´ll give it a whirl from my home edit: yup that did it but I really like to mount from my other partitions because my mandriva install is too small for having dvd iso´s
  5. I was testing it right now. It actually says the file doesn´t exist. I´m pretty sure it does as it does mount under XP
  6. I tried installing/uninstalling a couple of times, still get the same error; I´m not asked for root privileges either...
  7. Yeah this was with mount iso. I tried nrg and iso´s
  8. Thanks but unfortunately I´m getting these messages: ERROR: "media:/sda2/Volledige%20Binaries/GTA3%20install%20disk.nrg" is not readable, check file permissions! But I do have read write permission :s
  9. Not being able to patent stops companies from investing money for developing new things. But as it is now IBM has about 25000 people working on open source development. No, I´m from after days :P
  10. Is there a Linux alternative for Alcohol or Daemon tools for virtually mounting CD/DVD(-ROM) images?
  11. Which seemed to happened often indeed..... BTW: last year IBM donated more patents to the OS community than any other company
  12. That was a lot of frustration coming out, using Oracle I actually had to learn about ctrl-v and ctrl-c, I´d been using right click context menu´s ever since my I bought my first Amiga back in ´89
  13. At work I used to have to work w/ a database application in Oracle, it was the worst program I ever worked with and ALL my colleagues hated it from the deepest of their hearts. Visually it looked like it was written in win 3.11 days and it´s behaviour was even more primitive (WTF happened to right click menus!?), whilst in fact the app is now about 3 years old, never mind the database would keep locking up everytime, forcing me to call an admin to open the record up all the time and me losing all my data.... Never ever have I hated an application so badly, one of the MAJOR reasons to quit for me. Oracle SUCKS!!!!!!!!!!!

    Uninstalling programs

Okay, too bad. I get the same error. I tried make install too and that works but messes up the system to much. I guess I´ll have to wait till someone else makes an rpm.
  15. I´m not running the program from a shortcut but from my browser....
  16. in konqueror view->icon size->..... did it for me
  17. Another question, how do I remove a symlink?

    Uninstalling programs

I just tried making the kaffeine starter plugin and that seems to work, so I´m guessing something is wrong with the makefile? EDIT: (tried with kaffeine 0.8 too but I get the same error then...) EDIT2: I tried making the package in Ubuntu with checkinstall it worked there, unfortunately the rpm build in Ubuntu doesn't work in Mandriva; I also tried doing checkinstall from Ubuntu with the build from Mandriva and I get another error.....

I just tried recompiling as another user in another /home directory but still get the same error message....

    Uninstalling programs

I clicked on the shell script file kaffeine in kaffeine-0.8.1/kaffeine/src and then it would start 0.8.1 but I had to quit 0.7.1 first else it would just bring up 0.7.1. If I try to run kaffeine through the desktop or via the kaffeine starter plugin it just starts 0.7.1, so I don´t have 0.8.1 installed....

    Uninstalling programs

Yeah, I configured and made it , I can even run kaffeine 0.8.1 (the compiled program) from the directory where I made it....

    Uninstalling programs

It doesn´t seem to work, I get the following error: [root@localhost kaffeine]# checkinstall checkinstall 1.6.0, Copyright 2002 Felipe Eduardo Sanchez Diaz Duran This software is released under the GNU GPL. Uninstalling programs

Yes, this sounds like what I need. How do I use it, instead of make install I just cd to the directory and type checkinstall make install?
  24. My first Linux I tried was Knoppix 3.xx, I was pretty impressed with it, it looked really nice and fully featured, later I tried Mandriva 10.2 but as I couldn't get my USB ADSL modem to work, I dropped Linux. Last fall I thought my modem had died and bought an ethernet gateway router and when I gor bored a few weeks ago I tried installing Mandriva 10.2 again and here I am. The first *NIX I tried however where SGI Indies back in the days when Jurassic Park was still the hottest thing in CGI. But my first real computer love was my Amiga 500 (and later 1200) after Amiga died it took me literally years before I could set myself to using Windows because even Win XP can sometimes look primitive compared to an ancient Amiga.
