  1. Old users are painfully slow starting up KDE and other apps from KDE, GNOME is not affected neither are newly created users. When starting apps from konsole with ols users (not new users), I get this message first: Invalid directory name /usr/lib/X11/fonts/Speedo Invalid directory name /usr/lib/X11/fonts/100dpi Invalid directory name /usr/lib/X11/fonts/75dpi Invalid directory name /usr/lib/X11/fonts/OTF Invalid directory name /usr/lib/X11/fonts/TTF Invalid directory name /usr/lib/X11/fonts/Type1 Invalid directory name /usr/lib/X11/fonts/cyrillic Invalid directory name /usr/lib/X11/fonts/misc
  2. Okay, maybe my problem could also be in the binding of functions to my keys (via xmodmap), is there a way to correct this? I can see the output of xmodmap -pk has changed after upgrading X

How many speakers do you have? I believe 6.1 sound is impossible (without writing your own configuration files) as I understood it from the alsa devs, 5.1 and 7.1 should be possible though...
  4. After updating to xorg, my multimedia programs are a bit mixed up, these keys use the following program but I have no idea which program it is or where the settings are stored: http://img157.imageshack.us/img157/5020/snapshot135ew.png is a screenshot when I decrease the volume (increasing volume is broken....)
  5. Oh man, sorry to hear that, but also glad it worked on two of my computers. I had something similar with Debian (woody) in that when booting, it wouldn't recognize my keyboard! Mouse would work, but couldn't even reboot without hitting reset button! I never knew when it would happen since I boot different distros quite frequently. It is on another hd that is rarely used so I don't have to mess with it any more. Should try new kernel on it, but since I'm not using it, I don't worry about it. If the problem was occuring when using KDM to login, then enter under [General] in /etc/kde3/kdm/kdmrc the line: ServerVTs=-7
  6. Lucky you :P, well kdm works again but the fonts are ugly (even though the kdmrc entries are the same) mouse wheel fixed, though volume up doesn´ work nvidia-plf still not working btw latest version is 5mdk

    Xorg 7

Right now xorg is running but: mouse wheel is broken nvidia driver doesn´t work menu xdg still sorta broken (it´s better that 1mdk but I want the old version back, which I misplaced ) kdm doesn´t work well after this is fixed maybe we can finally start playing with the latest xgl a bit now that we have xorg 7.

    Xorg 7

Why didn´t I read this earlier
  9. Well it sort of works right now, except: kdm is broken nvidia plf driver is broken mouse wheel on my logitech mouse is broken but at least I have a gui again, why did i update?
  10. I am beginning to think this has something to do with the update to xorg 7.0, which is very problematic for many people. I have X back again, sort of but only as root, so I guess this is a cooker issue and I will have to wait for now unless anyone has any ideas.
  11. After applying some updates from Cooker I am getting the same error again. Anyone has a clue on how to fix this? I didn't even update xorg yet....
  12. Some fonts are not smoothed in Wine (like Arial, Courier and Times New Roman) whilst others are (like Bitstream), how can I get all fonts smoothed? [moved from Software by spinynorman]
  13. I do not enough to fix this problem but have you tried GNOME, so at least you can finish your work? Do you know how to use urpmi to install gnome, if you have not already installed it? Edit: And did you already try to login as a different or new user?
  14. Vista has been delayed so may times because MS wants to release version with as few bugs as possible, I am sure they could have released Vista months ago and most peope would be very happy using it. They have made a mistake with XP and they know it and are not going to let it happen again....

    Qt 3 vs 4 [solved]

thanks, too bad, I ll have to wait till opera fixes things :(
  16. I seem to have both Qt 3 and 4 installed, but if I want to uninstall 3 nearly all kde have to be uninstalled, can they not use Qt 4? I want to get rid of Qt 3 as it seems to not work so well with Opera and am hoping this would fix the problems.
  17. Just to let everybody know, today s or yesterday s upgrade of menu-xdg really messes up the system, so stick with the old version till a version after 0.10.1mdk comes along.
  18. I messed up my fstab many times already  but I found that there would always be a backup, called fstab~ but this is replaced with the current fstab if you edit it, so you first want to backup fstab~ and then try if copying the content to fstab fixes the problem.

    Uninstalling programs

I had success with mplayerplugin but that was the only package that I was able to make with checkinstall. I have a feeling that during the checkinstall an actual install is made which is then undone but the system is not allowing the install because it doesn´t have the priviliges eventhough I´m running checkinstall as root ( I did a make install as user and go the same errors)
  20. Thanks for the links, Arctic I made one rpm from a source package yesterday with instructions given to me in an irc chat but all the commands seemed a bit mysterious to me, anyway the package compiled and build up into several rpm´s https://mandrivausers.org/index.php?showtopic=32115 I hope that when I have a little more time I can figure out how to do it myself as sometimes I get a little impatient to try out some cool software...
  21. Could someone explain me to me or show me an easy howto to rpmbuild (without resorting to man pages :s) )??? [moved from Software by spinynorman]
  22. In Holland, where I´m from and live, there was a guy who thought he was clever and wanted to blackmail a multinational (though dutch in origin) company, he used a highly anonymous proxy (from a non EU country....) to mail his treaths, though the police where able to trace him through getting his ID from the proxy through a court order, ie. a proxy won´t really protect you.....
  23. I´ve managed to build an rpm of this cool little app. I couldn´t upload an rpm so I renamed the rpm to .gz, just change .gz to .rpm and you´re ready to go :) [note to self: ./autogen.sh; ./configure --prefix=/usr; make dist; su;rpmbuid -ta kbfx-cvs.tar.gz rpm makes rpm in usr/src/rpm/RPMS (not usr/src/RPM/RPMS) getting cvs cvs -z3 -d:pserver:anonymous@cvs.savannah.nongnu.org:/sources/kbfx co kbfxwork from directoy /xxxxx/xxxxx/ cvs will be in /xxxxx/xxxxx/kbfxwork ) ]

    Uninstalling programs

Did anyone ever used checkinstall succesfully? I tried several other packages and many times get the same error I got with Kaffeine.
