  1. The porblem is that VIRTUALY ALL dial-up ISP's use their own software. The real trick is figureing out which ones MUST use it. MSN and Earthlink BOTH use their own sotware, but you can easily connect to either with a standard ppp connection. AOL does NOT work with linux at all, because their software is required. When I talked to the guys from PeoplePC, they insisted that you can't connect to their servers with linux, ut they didn't know what a DUN or ppp connection was, so who knows. Beyond that I don't know. Sadly, unless you can find someone who has tried, the only real way to know is to sign up for service, try it out, and then cancle if it fails. sadly, this can get expensive in a hurry. On a side note, does ATT work with linux?

Go to http://www.soyo.com and lok through their boards. They all seriously rock and fuly support linux. Then, once you've picked out a board, go to http://www.newegg.com to buy it cause their prices rock! As for AMD/Intel, they make both, but AMD CPU's are WAY better. More stable, more cost effective.
  3. Don't feal bad about the MS, they make great game consoles too! Anyway, i don't see why it shouldn't work. If it requires a special driver under windows, (which I doubt) then it's probably a no go with linux. Likely as not however, it is just a standard USB keyboard, which IS fully supported on most systems, and handles the wireless all by itself. The one thing I might caution you on, is to open up your bios settings and be sure to enable USBkeyboard support if it is optional. It shouldn't make a difference once the OS loads, but you might want to accss the bios some daay....
  4. Well, it works now. If anyone else encounters this problem, the only thing I did differently was coppy the installer from the CD onto my hard drive before running it.
  5. I vote vaporware. I think this will never be successful for the same reason it has taken wine and winex to come as far as they have. MS is never going to release all the details of all their API's. It's just not going to happen. Without that, there's realy no way to keep up.
  6. don't worry bout it, this was a double post and we helped Dean out over in the instalation forum.
  7. Thank you guys so much. This looks very promissing. I'm not sure why he gave up on the users board so fast, but i'll call him and tell him to get his but to the mub and read what you guys had to say. Very usefull.
  8. I don't know what happened to dean, so I'll reply for him. Hopefully you can help better than me Ix. (He's a friend of mine) Anyway, he was having increasing problems with stbility and boot time and speed on his system. it was to the pointthat it was taking like 4 or 5 minute to fully boot into kde, so I suggested to his that he just re-install without formating /home since that is usualy what I do if i can't figure out a problem. so he re-installled without formatting /home, but when prompted to add a user, he didn't add any, and when he got to the resulsts screan where he should have chosen a time zone and set up all of his configurations, he just ignored it all and clicked next. When he rebooted, he wasn't able to log in of course, so he re-installed a second time and went ahead and added users and what not on his second go. The system boots ad he can now log in as himself, but permissions are screwed up from one end of /home to the other and kde won't start for his user acount because of the permissions and there was also an error he told me about invloving a diretory called .lce but I'm not sure. He was supposed to post it here but didn't. He can log in as root just fine and even launch kde in root mode (I know that's risky) and all of that works. So what shoud he do? I can help him but I'm still learning and he is VERY green. Help appreciated. Oh, and he has 5 partitions: / /usr /home swap /mnt/win (used to be a win dual boot, it's just empty right now.
  9. I don't know how much you already know about linux software, so if this is pedantic you'll have to forgive me. BAsicaly you are dead on about the software. Most linux software is distributed as source code. Niuce for developers, sucky for normal people. All of the software mandrake offers is just a wee litle bit behind because they've taken the time to do all the tweaking and compiling for us and packaged it into rpm's. The -Xmdk versions are the same. They sometimes find bugs or incompatabilities in the software and have to recompile it. When they do this, they want to distinguish it from the previous version even though it was technicaly the same software. example: Mandrake 10.0CE came with kernel 2.6.3-4mdk, that's the fourth comilation they made of kernel 2.6.3. It was realy buggy for some people, so they fixed it and recomiled 2 or three tmes and now the current version (unless they released an update while I wan't looking) is kernel-2.6.3-7mdk. It's still kernel 2.6.3, but it took them 7 tries to get to this exact configurationa nd comilation, hence -7mdk
  10. Short answer: No. medium anser: Probably not, but look up "Winmodems for linux" or Linmodems. If you want to invest a LOT of time and energy, it may be possible to get some functionality out of your modem, though probably not. Long Answer: A number of years ago, most companies stopped building modems, and started building "winModems". A winmodem is realy nothing more than a PCI-RJ11 adapter (RJ11 is what phones use). All of the functions of the modem are controlled by software. Problem is, this software is writen almost exclusively for windows. There are a few companies which have been kind enough to write linux drivers, but they are often VERY complicated to install, and some are crippled to half speed. Real modems are now called "Hardware controlled modems" and you will need one of htese if you want to use your modem under linux. I personaly reccomend the external variety the connect via a serial cable, though any USB model that also uses it's own hardware controller "should" work with only a litle extra effort. There are also internal PCI modems that are hardware controlled, and if you have a realy old mother board, most ISA modems were hardware controlled. The modem I use for daily internet access and faxing is the Creative Labs Modem Blaster external serial modem. I would reccomend it to anyone with a serial port. if you don't have any legacy ports onyour computer (as in you only have USB) I'm sure someone else here can reccomend a good USB modem for you.
  11. Okay, I have the latest version of Americas Army: Operations instaled on my mandrake 10.0ce box. The file downloaded, extracted and installed without error and a successfull archive integrity test. When I run the game in a console, I get the following output. <?int?Engine.Errors.FailedBrowse?> <?int?Core.Errors.History?>: Exiting due to error Any clues? It's quite meaningless to me. I tried running the shell script in the main army ops folder AND the actual executable for online play and both returned the same error. I'd be happy to post anything that you think might be usefull.
  12. I know, but the number is TINY, and typicaly, it's only the games that use DirectX for 2D acceleration, or OpenGL games that have DX calls for just a few functions or for sound.
  13. Amen! The best computer builder I've ever met is me.
  14. I have heard the same line of bullh$t from several other people about the basic wine supporting DirectX. the reality is that with the exception of a tiny handfull of VERY old software, absolutely no direct X software will run in wine. The only remotely usefull way to run directX games under lnux is called WineX. You can get it from http://www.transgaming.com The latest version is 3.3 and runs MANY game perfectly. DX8 support is almost final and a small handfull of DX 9 games run fine. I have tried many games that worked and many that didn't, but I have not had a single game fail due to DirectX in wineX3.3 The program is actualy "free" but you can only download the sourcecode from the CVS server for free. This of course does not include their commercial dll's, which make all the differnece in the world. if you want packaged files that include the commercial dll's, you have to subscribe, which is $5.00 per month, minimum 3 months, so the first download will cost you $15.00 However, if they release another version while you're subscribed, it's free, and continuing your subscription is onlu $5.00 per month. I reccomend that you subscribe, and instead of downloading WineX, download their graphical WineX manager, called Point-to-Play and let it download and install WineX for you. Out of curriosity, what game are you trying to install?
  15. Come on guys! I know `that this shouldn't be that hard. conceptualy, i know what I need to do. I just need to know how. What needs to be done, is to somehow map the commands that is puts out to specific keyboard inputs. I know this is possible because the USB version of "The Claw" which is a very similar device in both form and function is natively supported and lthe MCC detects the sidewinder correctly.
  16. 1. only a handfull of PPC's can runa ny form of linux. Most would be destroyed if you tried to flash them with familiar or some other linux distro. 2. putting linux on a PPC is a gigantic waste of money as a large part of what you pay for with a PPC is the MS OS. 3. Check out http://www.zaurususergroup.com 4. If you have LOT's of money, get your self a Sharp SL-C860. They have VGa resolution and a rotating clamshell design. They are not available outside of japan, so you will have to order off ebay or through an importer like Dynamism. If you order from dynaamism, you will get it with a mostly translated OS. If you buy a new one off ebay, it will be in japanese. 5. IMO, the best ROM (read ROM as "distro") for an SL-5000d, 5500 is called Open Zaurus. The best for the 5600 is called tkc and the best for any of the "c" models as in the c700 through c860 is called pdaXrom. Available at http://www.cacko.biz It's the best as it actualy runs an X server with a window manager and all the extras including a dev kit for compiling desktop software for the Z.
  17. I know this is another left field qeustion, but I have an old MS Sidewider Strategic commander, and I'd realy like to get it working under linux. In windows, you use their software to program the buttons,or program them on the fly, and it emulates a USB keybord, so it works with absolutely any game that accepts keyboard input. It is intended for RTS games, though I and many others have found it works exceedingly well in FSP games if you take the time to think out your configuration and get it set up the way you want. Anyway, I have read many passihng references to people using it in linux, and I'm convinced that it's doable, but I've not been able to find anything resembling directions. I don't expect anyone here know's how, but I'd love to hear so ideas about where to start.
  18. glad to hear it. I thought that might be it.
  19. also, if you go cannon fodders route and get a new ISP (may not be a bad idea), Earthlink and MSN both work well with linux. That's right, the Microsoft Network ISP fully supports standard ppp connections and plays very nice with linux, go figure......
  20. I know thi isn't what you want to hear, but I'm going to say it anyway. Stop using a winmodem. i know it seems like a ot of money to pay $50.00 for modem, but it's not. When I first bought my external modem, I was still dual booting with windows XP, and i can honestly tell you, that an external hardware controlled modem, works better. Period. Even in Windows they work better. I can personaly reccomend the modem I use. It's the Creative Labs Modem Blaster External (serial) It's cable has both types of serial conections and it's is reasonably small and attractive if you care. They run about $49.99 and are worth every penny, especialy in linux. That being said, i agree that it's not a hardware probllem, or even a driver problem but an authentication problem. Chances are, you are using the wrong method of authentication. Try setting the auth type in kppp to PAP/chap which will autoselect between them. If that doesn't work,it's probably a script type authentication protecal, and you are in for a headache with any kind of modem. Post your errors as you've been asked, and also tell us everything you know about your ISP (especialy who it is). Don't post user/pass, but post everything else you feal you can.
  21. There is now an even better and simpler fix. Just get a copy of the kernel form the update mirrors which ar noww up to AT LEAST 2.6.3-7mdk, and run that kernel. Then you get 2.6.3 AND a FULLY function psc device. The kernel csource is also available for that kernel, though you have to download and install it yourself.
  22. I haven't looked at this thread in a while. There's actualy a much simpler solution. The 2.6 kernel that comes ith mandrake 10.0ce is version 2.6.3-4mdk. But you can get version 2.6.3-7mdk from the update mirrors. That kernel fixed all of my kernel related problems. The source code is also on the mirors, though you have to download and install it manualy. there may actualy be something newer that 7mdk by now, but 7 works
  23. Have you tried updating your kernel? 10.0ce comes by default with 2.6.3-4mdk, but 2.6.3-7mdk is on the update mirrors if you look, so is the matching source. It fixed most of my hardware related issues.
  24. I have a perfetly functional install of wine AND winex3.3 i have installed and run on a daily basis, several programs in each that all work fine. I'm trying to install Magic the Gathering Online (NOTE, this is NOT the magic the gathering game that is listed as non-funcional at transgaming.com). When I try to install with winex, I get an error, teling me font resource sserife.fot could not be created, fontname sserife.fon Winex then exits. When I install with wine, everything works fine, but there's no text anywhere. Everywhere there should be text, it's just blank. I have installed the windows core fonts and have already checked all my permisions. I'd realy appreciate any guidance you might have.
  25. Like the jitter-bug, so simple it plumb evaded me.... If anyone else has this problem, you need to do two things to fix it. 1. Open up mcc/hardware/hardware and click on the sound card. Then click "Configure Module" and in the box for "Enable" put a 1 2. Open up your favorite mixer and disable "IEC958 Capture Monitor" That's it, you should have sound.
