  1. awsome, I'll have to give them a go this weekend
  2. sounds like CVS to me since he said CVS. Here's the scoop if you haven't read it elsewhere. First of all, as SoulSe said, there is no winex. It now called cedega. The second thing you need to know is that there are two VERY different versions. The first, the CVS you're trying to install is what you might call cripple-ware. It does not deal well with CD copy protection and it does not deal with direct 3d uch better than wine. And best of all, it's a bitch to install. The other version is what subscribers like me have access to. For $5.00 a month you get access to the member downlaod area where you can get pre-compiled, ready to install, packages of cedega that include support for all those important extras and install in a snap.
  3. just tell me what isp you're using and I can probably help. my guess is that you're useing the wrong authentication protical. You should NOT be using script based with most ISP's. most of them work best with PAP/CHAP
  4. You will find that most games run far better on the commercial version of cedega. the cvs is crippleware
  5. Well, I've tried it, and I'm NOT knocking it. It seems to play all the old games that i could play in the past MUC better and several games I was unable to play before are now playable, so yes, this does deserve a major version update. Also, there's soem nifty new features like the one I mentioned in my other thread.
  6. lol, no, no it doesn't. Seriosly though, it's very nice. It's the kind of CDROM funcitonality I've always missed since switching.
  7. This topic realy falls somewhere between about 3 different forums, but since it's all thnks to transgaming, I'm putting it here. One of the biggest complaints from windows to linux converts is that some things are different in ways that make no sense. We all understand why it's not set up with global permissions, and we all know why configuration is usualy handled through easy to read/edit text files and so on. But some things, just make no sense, like why putting a cd in the drive, doesn't let you access it's contents. And why once a cd is mounted, pushing the button won't eject the CD. Sorry, but that's dumb. There's been many attempts at fixing this. The first serious one that I was aware of was supermount, but supermount comes with a rather healthy set of inherant problems. Mandrake10.0 comes with something differnt. It includes a program which instead of leaving a drive always mounted like supermount, leaves it unmounted and then mounts it on disk insertion. it can even tell what kind of disk it is and with a lite initial tweaking, open the right program. But this has problems too. Not the least of which is that non-functional eject button. Jsut seems like awaste to not use it..... it's shouldn't take 2 mouse clicks and a 3 second wait to do something your PC already has a big shiny button for right up front. Enter Transgamings WineX4.0 now known as cedega. When you install Cedega, it makes some system changes that allow that eject button to work even if you have say, a konq window open to /mnt/cdrom. Now you would think that this would be a problem, ejecting a mounted CD, but no. MAndrake10 is finaly smart enough to figure out the CD is gone and automaticaly unmounts it for you, ready for the next CD to be automaticaly like windows. Praise the lord, we've finaly made it into the mid 1990's
  8. IMNSHO the wine that comes with mandy 10 sucks. go to http://www.winehq.com I just tried to install 20040615 and it failed but 20040505 works fantasticaly with mandrake 10
  9. looks like I may not be able to download for a while. transgaming.com is COMPLETELY overloaded
  10. Damn you LiquidZoo!!!! How did you beat me here????????? I've been checking the site allmorning and it just came up?!?!?!?!?!? Oh well. must say I'm looking forward to a reduction in sound lag. Hope more of my games work
  11. Buy a card reader Buy a card reader Buy a card reader Buy a card reader Buy a card reader Buy a card reader Buy a card reader Buy a card reader Buy a card reader Buy a card reader No realy, Buy a card reader. I know that lately i've been sounding like a broken record with this tune, but just buy the right thing. You can afford a computer, an internet connection and a nice enough digital camera that the pictures are worth printing. Just go to Wal*Mart, shelll out $20 for a multi car reader, put the card in the reader, plug the reader in and double clickthe hard drive icon that instantly aprears on your desktop. Not only would such a card reader be far easier, they are also typicaly faster. In fact, for the same money you can get a USB2.0 card reader that will practialy fly. Even in windows, plugging your camera in with a usb cable is more trouble than it's worth.
  12. there is a FANTASTIC image iditing program on the mandrake CD's allready called the gimp and it works at least as well as if not better than corel. Personaly, I would put it right on par with photoshop. And, if you wantmyou ca uninstall it and installl the newer version that is available at their website or on the contrib mirrors.
  13. Seriously, DO NOT BOTHER WITH THE CVS OF WINEX!!!!!!!! Let me explain why. When you subsrcibe to Transgaming.com, you are allowed to download pre-compiled and packaged versions of winex that are easy to install and automaticaly configure themselves. But, more importantly, they contain proprietary closed source dll's that the cvs version does not contain. What do these extra dll's do? you ask. Well, first of all, they are responsible for dealing with copy protected CD's. Most of which will not function in the CVS version. Also, much of the 3d translation from directX to linux is handled by the extra dll's, and also installshield. Basicaly, the CVS version is crippled beyond al usefullness IMO. Look, it's only $15.00. Why not just try it?
  14. you'll notice that almost all externals are 112k instead of 56. Of course, you'll never get more than 56 in the USA
  15. check out all the externals at newegg. http://www.newegg.com/app/Viewproduct.asp?...rchFor=external
  16. I made my first post just after waking up this morning, so I hope it didn't sound too harsh. i sometimes sound like a herk when i first wake up. Not a morning persona and all that. I'm glad you're getting a serial modem. i think you'll be REALY happy you did. There are 'some' hardware controlled internals but then the com ports are wierd and might not even be constant and they 'can' be harder to set up, so an external is realy the way to go. I love mine. Also, since you're clearly new, let me give you a tip or two for setting it up. First of all, if you only have one serial port on the back of your computer, it is almost certainly ttyS0 (in windows that would be com1) Also, if you want to find out for sure and it's not ttyS0, you can just take whatever com port windows reports it as and subtract 1. So, com4 (the usual for pci cards) becomes ttyS3 and so on. Remember that most linux programers count the way a computer counts, that is, 0-1-2-3-4 as opposed to windows and humans 1-2-3-4-5 Second. I realy don't reccomend you bother using the mandrake controll center to set up your conection. It's realy a waste of time. Especialy if you have no other network. IMNSHO, the very best software for dial-up internet connections in linux is kppp. Some people prefer wvdial, which is a command line program, but for the new user and the lazy user, kppp is much better. If you want to do something like internet connection sharing you may need to use the MCC as doing it by hand may still be beyond you. Lord knows it's still beyond me to manualy share dial-up........ If you have trouble configuring kppp, I reccomend you search the forums before asking because it's unlikely you'll come up with an original problem in kppp. If by chance you can't find the answer, i used kppp with MSN for a long time and I'm sure I could help, and i'd be glad to.
  17. I use the Creativelabs MODEM_BLASTER External Serial 56k modem. It's $50.00US but I have to say this thread seems a bit pointless as every single hardware controllled modem on earth will work as far as i've ever seen. That's the whole point of a hardware controlled modem, there are NO drivers, so they can't possibly be mis-configured. Even in windows, no extra drivers, just lie and tell windows it's a Hayes. People have only had three kinds of problems with modems. 1. Winmodems and all the inherant problems tht come with them and, 2. Not knowing enough about their computers or linux to figure out what ttyS port their modem is attatched to so they can link it to /dev/modem 3. Not knowing how to use a modem in linux. As you can see, none ofthat has anything to do with linux. Also, if for some unfathomable reason, a person insists on using a stupid winmodem, there are exhastive lists of the windmodems that will work with linux on a number of winmodem/linmodem websites.
  18. As for the ipod, you might do a search on google for ipod and linux. There may be native software allready to get the job done. For your cames, you realy only have three choices in my not so humble opinion, and i know this is the case from a lot of experience struggleing with windows games in linux. 1. Shell out the money for winex. I know, I've been a starving college student once too, but I can't imagine a person who can afford a computer and internet service but can't muster $15.00. This is the only reasonably effective option. And you should know, that 'something' very big is coming from transgaming (the makers of winex) on the 22nd of this month, just two days away. i don't know wht, but they've been emailing vague adds to member for a couple of weeks and there's an equaly ambiguous ad on their front page. 2. You second option is to dual boot. That is, if you didn't know, to have two or more opperating systems installed on different partitionas and bootloader that lets you choose wich to load. IMO, this is a totaly waste of time for home users and completely defeates the purpose. Especialy when you consider that you're not realy running the games in linux this way anyway. Now, if you want to test out a new distro but want access to the old one, it can be a great thing, but not for daily use. 3. Your only other option is to stop playing those games. Some people will tell you that some 3d games run in wine, but despite claims to the contrary, I've never seen a 3d game run in wine unless it was openGL and didn't need the d3d or directx libraries anyway. Wine is okay for direct sound and directx-2d, but any modern direct X game is only playable in windows or under winex.
  19. I'm affraid I haven't a clue what post, but I had the same problem once with /dev/cdrom. Turned out i had /mnt/cdrom open in a konqeror window on desktop 2 and it wouldn't let me unmount untill I closed it.
  20. You also might try updating that kernel. It's up to 2.6.3-13mdk on the update mirrors, and I think there's a 2.6.6 on the contrib that people have had mixe resuts with
  21. I'm fealing a bit grumpy here, so i hope no one is personaly offended, you shouldn't be. It seems to me that this is all exactly the kind of brain washed debate MS would love to know about. I know this may seem uncaring, which is somewhat against my usualy character, but I have to say: Now this is the cold part, but you should know, that when i switched to linux I was still on dial-up and had the EXACT same issues with at that time mandrake 9.0 (not to mention earlier failures with other distros). GET OVER IT. yup, we all think it on some level but I'm saying it. Your computer, even if it's a piece of old garbage from good-willl, cost you at least $100.00 Windows is another $199.95. That means that your computer and windows, was $300, likely much much more, add up all the software that is needed to make windows usefull, and you're looking at $400-$600 for a computer that can't do any more than word processing and can't do that well. And people get on here and elsewhere and gripe because they have to spend $50.00 on a modem that will work better anyway. I've been there. I've been a starving college student, but lets face reality. If you can afford an internet connection and your own computer, you CAN find a way to scrounge together $50 for a one time purchase. I know it's hard, you might have to stop eating funions and drining mountain dew for a week or two, of maybe eat ramen noodles more often, but you CAN do it. Add it up folks: windowsXP $200 MS office $150-$800 existing winmodem free total for a glorified typerwriter = $350-$1000 Mandrake linux 4CD set from cheapbytes.com $12 shipped a modem that will work better anyway $50 thousands of office and productivity programs free thousands of games ranging from solitaire to advanced 3d first person shooters free stability free totaly imunity to computer viruses free total= $62
  22. When I was trying to get better fnctionality out of my strategic comander I ran across a program that let's you program keyboard combos to a usb pad, otherwise, it send 'up', 'down', 'button1', etc. I believe it was called joy2key. never got it running, but I suspect you might have more success.
  23. not sure about fedora but I'm pretty sure you don't want to deltel the load glx line. I mean, if you don't load glx, how do you expect it to work?? In mandrake the file is /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 most distros it's that minus the -4. not sure if you're using xorgs version of X though. Anyway, start by replacing the glx line and trying again.
  24. i could be wrong here, but I'm pretty sure halflife only uss direct x for sound and 2d. 'm almost certain the 3d is all openGL. Hence the reason it works in wine
  25. If you want to know about games that do and don't work, you should go to http://www.transgaming.com and check things out. They have a huge database of games sorted by how well they work. 5 means it works just like windows, 0 means totaly non-functional. If it's a game you care about, there's a forum fo each game and many of the 0 games actualy will work with some effort on your part. And of course, no, I wouldn't say that most/all games work. After all, it's not windows. i have however gotten all the games I care aobut working except one.
