  1. The description of your machine in your first post doesn't sound like a 64 bit machine.
  2. In KDE you can choose not to alias fonts below a certain size in the Fonts panel. I don't think Gnome has that option. However have you tried using gconf-editor, maybe there's an option there?
  3. Hi I got Mandrake 10. One of the problems I'm having is that xine plays wmv files with really bad sound. Yet the same files sound perfect in mplayer in Mandrake 10 and in xine back in Mandrake 9.2. I tried using different audio drivers on the command line: alsa, oss and arts and none of them seem to help. Xine plays other file types with correct sound, it just seems to be wmv files it has problems with. Help!
  4. 1. Try drakfont. If it doesn't work, use KDE font installer in the KDE control centre. Actually use KDE font installer anyway, the drakfont UI makes me tear my hair out and I don't think it worked anyway. 2. No idea. 3. If starting xmms from a menu option or an icon, remove "soundwrapper" in front of the xmms command. 4. Bad colours in video: Your hue is set in the centre. Move hue setting to far left.
  5. So, how are you supposed to update k3b then?
  6. The process I went through to get java working with Mozilla 1.6 in Mandrake 10. 1. Get j2re-1_4_2_03. It must be this one. j2re-1_4_2_02 and earlier do NOT work with later Mozillas including the one in 9.2. This was my main sticking point and what drove me crazy. 2. Install the rpm file.
  7. I finally got CD burning to work! I read this thread: http://www.linuxquestions.org/questions/ar...003/12/4/128037 It describes someone's problems with getting CD burning to work with 2.6 kernels. Now the problem they describe is totally different from mine. However while they had problems with k3b, xcdroast worked. I urpmi xcdroast and then it worked! Yay! On a note I tried k3b again. Yeah, it gave me the error message, cannot burn at 4 speed, switching down burn speed to 0x. This time instead of canceling, I thought, screw it, let it continue. And it works. In fact as far as I can tell it *is* burning at 4 speed, though the messages it gives indicates that it just downgraded to speed to 0. In summary: Eroaster and gtoaster I think still look for scsi-emulation. Found that they don't work even *with* scsi-emulation, at least not on my system. k3b does burn, just ignore the dire error messages it gives you saying that it can't/won't. xcdroast works perfectly. This is all w/o scsi emulation BTW. Actually when I turn on scsi-emulation things still are wonky. But for some extra weirdness, after using the drive as a burner, automounting (I think it's magicdev now, not supermount) doesn't work. You have to manually mount that drive. Before burning: don't need to manually mount drive. After burning: You do. And is it just me or could it be that part of the problem may be that Mandrake is using *too* bleeding edge stuff. Here's an example: cdrecord -scanbus dev=ATAPI Cdrecord-Clone 2.01a26-dvd (i686-pc-linux-gnu) Copyright © 1995-2004 Jörg Schilling Note: This version is an unofficial (modified) version with DVD support Note: and therefore may have bugs that are not present in the original. 8. is the prob. That will not work. It has to be more like your old 2.4 in fstab do you not have one? or similar? You'd be the second I've read that happening to. The 2.6 is not ready for prime time. Flipped my cdwr/dvd and screwed up my burning as well, but it I could get them to work. Just one at a time though. Unfortunately, that *was* with the fstab and lilo.conf file from the 2.4 kernel ie. Mandrake 9.2 :( :( :( How did you get your CD burner to work?
  9. Now I went back to the lilo.conf and fstab that Mandrake 10 automatically set up. So no scsi emulation. Added "hdc=ide-cdrom" to lilo.conf so we have for example: append="devfs=mount hdc=ide-cdrom acpi=ht resume=/dev/hda5 splash=silent" Still no CD burning :( I tried changing the default burning speed in k3b many times each time I change lilo.conf or fstab. Still doesn't work. As soon as you try burning something it pipes up with a message about not being about to support 4 speed and setting it back down to 0 speed.
  10. Hi! Thanks for the replies. I tried copying my old fstab and lilo.conf to /etc. Though I had to change none /mnt/cdrom supermount dev=/dev/scd0,fs=udf:iso9660,ro,--,iocharset=iso8859-15 0 0 to none /mnt/cdrom supermount dev=/dev/hdc,fs=udf:iso9660,ro,--,iocharset=iso8859-15 0 0 for my CD burner to even read CDs. Now the lines in my lilo.conf go: append="devfs=mount hdc=ide-scsi acpi=ht resume=/dev/hda5 splash=silent" where previously they were append="devfs=mount acpi=ht resume=/dev/hda5 splash=silent" However it still has the same burning problems! cdrecord -scanbus (as root) gives the result: Cdrecord-Clone 2.01a26-dvd (i686-pc-linux-gnu) Copyright © 1995-2004 Jörg Schilling Note: This version is an unofficial (modified) version with DVD support Note: and therefore may have bugs that are not present in the original. 11. Hi, I just installed Mandrake 10. Unfortunately my CD burning seems to be dead. It works fine in Mandrake 9.1 and 9.2. In fact I just used it just before installing to burn some backups. However k3b insists its writing speed is 0x. gtoaster just refuses to acknowledge its existence and eroaster also has troubles with it? Any ideas? I thought of putting scsi in lilo.conf, but then I remembered that we aren't supposed to do that anymore. Help! I'm thinking it might have something to do with fstab? The entry for my burner in my old 9.2 fstab: none /mnt/cdrom supermount dev=/dev/scd0,fs=udf:iso9660,ro,--,iocharset=iso8859-15 0 0 Now the entry for the same thing in 10: /dev/hdc /mnt/cdrom auto umask=0,user,iocharset=iso8859-15,codepage=850,noauto,ro,exec 0 0 Any ideas? I really want my CD burner back as my computer is none too stable and I need to make regular backups :(
  12. As the title says :) I thought that official was supposed to come out 2-3 months after community, but on the Mandrake timeline I see it is slated for the end of March? Also will official be available for download as well or will it be only for the box distro?
  13. If you use KDE an easy way to rip to ogg files is to put the CD in the drive, go to Konqueror, then go to the sidebar, choose "Services", Audio CD. Then just go and copy the Ogg folder in Audio CD to a drive on your hard drive and Konqueror should do all the ripping and converting automatically. You should be able to do this with mp3 as well but Mandrake doesn't compile KDE with the right options. I don't use ogg as my CD/mp3 player doesn't support ogg but I found this out when I was looking for ways to rip my CD collection (I use grip which once you set it up, ripping is just a one-click operation). To configure the ripping options for both ogg and mp3 ripping and a cddb server to get the titles and artist names automatically go to the KDE Control Centre and Choose "Sound"->"Audio CDs".
  14. If you want a visual note you don't need another program - though this does require having kmail open so Korn could be an option if you want to close kmail. All you need to do is go: Network Receiving Other Actions More Options This brings up a whole lot of other options, eg playing a specific sound file, running a program etc. but the one you want is Show a Message in a Pop-Up window I also choose the "Use a Passive window that does not interrupt other work" option as well. When you get new mail, a little window (that doesn't make your mouse suddenly move to it like other dialogue and error boxes do thank god) appears near the taskbar saying you have new mail. It also disappears automatically - I can't remember if this is time based or whether you have to click on kmail first. It's very unobtrusive though - it's very small, looks like a sticky note and doesn't even have any window borders.
  15. Some other tips. I usually use kmail because I belong to a lot of mailing lists with lots of long threads. Kmail has the best keyboard navigation of threads (I've tried Mozilla Mail and Evolution). Left arrow, right arrow - moves you from the next/previous message , - open thread . - close thread Also I usually have the preview panel on. Page Up and Page Down do not page up or page down in the message list. Even if you are in the message list, page up and page down will page up or page down the message in you are currently viewing in the preview panel. This means you don't have to navigate the message list until you find the message you want and then switch focus to the preview panel if you want to see the rest of the message. This makes pure keyboard navigation easier. Also you can make filters simply by right-clicking on a message and then choosing one of the options in the right-click menu. Evolution has this option as well but Mozilla Mail makes you enter all the filters in by hand. Ugh. If you belong to a lot of mailing lists then kmail has a lot of useful features specific to mailing lists. Have a play around with the right-click menus. Finally when you start a new message, you can click on the "..." button next to the address fields to choose an an address from your address book, but when the addresses are brought up if you choose "Show recent addresses" it shows all of the recent addresses you've sent mail to even if you haven't put them in your address book/contacts yet.
  16. Hi Just wanted to inform you guys that I downloaded j2re-1_4_2_03-linux-i586-rpm.bin and now java works fine in mozilla and galeon (but not in Konq - oh well, it wasn't working before anyway). Thanks very much for you help guys!
  17. If you have a wheel mouse, just scroll the wheel to move from image to image. It's much more convenient than pressing Pg Up and Down and you can move through images much quicker than using the keyboard.
  18. Wow! Thanks a lot. I tried it and it works great! I never knew Konqueror could do things like that.
  19. Hi! Does anyone have a recommedation for a good GUI front-end for scp? I transfer a lot of files to and from my work computer and my home computer and am I am a bit tired of doing it by the command-line all the time. A GUI front-end will make my life so much easier. At least I'd be able to stop cutting and pasting the full paths each time... Thanks!

    Losing focus

Hi I was wondering if there was anyway to stop new windows eg. dialogue boxes stealing focus? I mainly use KDE though I use GNOME sometimes. Thanks
  21. Really? I might try it sometime when I have the time to download another huge file. Yes, I know I said I wouldn't try again but I guess there's something in me that just can't help but try again  I'm so hopeless.
  22. You're not alone. Everyone keeps on saying how easy it is to get java working in mozilla, but I've tried installing java, making symlinks, changing my bash profile etc. and it doesn't work. I've got it working in previous installations and this time it doesn't work (I've tried j2re-1_4_1_02-linux-i586-rpm and j2re-1.4.1_01-5mdk.i586.rpm amongst others). It might be a "need to use the right compiler" problem but since there is no way to tell what compiler various sources compiled java with, or what mozilla was compiled with (not to mention I'm *not* going to download any more 20+MB files given my crappy connection.), I've given up and since I only really need java for one webpage, I installed java in Windows. And not only was the java download half the size of the one for Linux (why?) all you had to do was run an executable and it worked first go which was a godsend after spending an hour trying to get it to work in Mozilla and Konqueror. Seriously though, I don't know a single Linux browser where installing things like Java is trivial. Konqueror is easier than Mozilla since instead of making symlinks, changing your bash profile all you have to do is to point one of the options in the configuration to the right directory. However it doesn't seem to work (though I have got it working in the past). All the other major browsers are based on Mozilla so if you can't get it working in Moz don't bother. I haven't tried Opera, but the messages it gives me about it being buggy if you turn on Java and you should really be sure first, give me pause. I've got to ask though. There are *three* mozilla directories in /usr/lib/. I wasn't sure which one was the correct one so I put the java plugin in all three. But why on earth are their three mozilla directories : mozilla, mozilla-1.1 and mozilla-1.4? Only Mozilla 1.4 is installed on my 9.2 system. *Sigh* I like Linux and would never go back to Windows, but when installing java goes, "First of all make sure your java plugin and browsers are compiled with the same compiler, then run the executable, then make symlinks (or just copy the plugin over) to the mozilla plugin directory in /usr/lib and since there are three different ones just try all 3 just in case, make some changes to your bash profile and voila" I really want to cry and bash my head against the wall (esp. since it still doesn't work, probably because of the compiler bit). Oh well, such is life (or Linux I guess in this case). I've never been very good at installing programs in Linux so maybe it's just me (9 times out of 10 I usually end up spending an hour or more trying to get it to work/compile/install). Which is why I tend to stick with the default install now and don't bother trying new versions of programs or other programs.

    Java problems

Hi I can't seem to get Java to work on my Mandrake 9.2 system. In the past Java has worked on previous Mandrake distros intermittently. Sometimes it'd work in Mozilla and not Konqueror and vice-versa. This time I can't get it to work at all. I downloaded java from this website and made all the usual changes eg. editing .bashrc, copying the plugin (the ns610 one) to /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins, setting up the proper path to the java executable in Konqueror. Mozilla doesn't see the plugin at all and Konqueror loads the java applet but then gives a message about the applet failing. This is what I placed in my .bashrc file: JAVA_HOME=/usr/lib/j2re-1.4.1 export JAVA_HOME PATH=$PATH:$JAVA_HOME/bin PATH=$PATH:/usr/local/Acrobat5/bin export PATH Thanks!
  24. You don't even need to Page Up/Down. If you have a wheel mouse you can just roll the wheel up or down to move to the next image. Very handy at times.

    KDE bugs

Hi I always do fresh installs (format, install). I've heard enough of the problems about upgrading. I always use the stock standard stuff from Mandrake and only apply security patches as I don't have a good internet connection. I don't mess around with new programs or upgrading very much.
