  1. for future reference, you almost never need to use crossover cables anymore (which is good cause they cost a lot more.) The network cards in modern computers can work out for themselves whether the pins need swapping over.
  2. fedora isn't red hat 10, its supposed to be a whole new linux os... but its not ;-) go to distrowatch.com for release names.

    AMD or Intel ??

i really hope they compile doom3 for 64bit linux after you've bought that little lot!

    Wireless Netwok

i thought: you could run ethernet cables for about 300m? 802.11a is also 55MB, with much shorter range though i'd say get some nice cat6 cable and start digging :)
  5. if its a clean install of windows and you have the discs, why not take the risk of having to spend 45 minutes reinstalling windows? i think it is probably safe, if it wasn't, lots of people using mandrake for the first time would be taking their boxed mdk back with a few words to say!
  6. if its a clean system, none of your files are on it, and you'ev been given a windows recovery disc, take the 1 in 100 risk you'll have to use the recovery disc cause mandrake screwed it up. Its always worked fine for me. NB. sometimes mandrake just won't resize the ntfs drive. go into windows and look in disk defragmenter, there might be "unmovable files" What you have to do is turn of the page file windows creates, and turn it back on after you've installed mandrake. have fun :)
  7. you don't need a crossover cable, just plug a normal network cable into the pc and into the ibook, the pc's network card can do the crossing over. (if one doesn't work, try the other, my brother has that board after i told him to buy it.) boot into windows 2000 and share a folder with write access (or set up an smb server in mandrake if you know how to do that better), and load up mac os. You'll need to make sure both computers have IP addresses on the same network, and be sure to take off any firewalls you may have going. If you have a version of mac osx you should be able to drag and drop files on to your windows computer. If you have macos, we may have to think again. -fissy
  8. do both the computers have ethernet ports? If so, the easiest thing would be to take a standard network cable and plug one end into the ibook and the other into the pc. From there you can use some sort of filesharing system. Would be handy if you mentioned what operating systems the involved computers were using :) -fissy
  9. You have to use an MS reader, who knows whether they make one for linux. The idea is to stop people forwarding things that their bosses want to keep quiet. Clearly though, if someone wants to leak information they are not going to be stopped. Even if they disable copy and paste, how are they going to stop print-screen? Pointless feature to make the people paying the bills believe they have to use windows.
  10. don't get anything by dlink and don't get anything based on chips made by texas intruments.
  11. i do see your point, but: what i love most about the internet is its lack of structure, free for all basically. I think that helps new ideas, although most of the time you will be talking aobut the same things over and over. That can happen in a single place though, look at forums!
  12. The Internet is our thinktank, and i love it. Qchem: the beast surely isn't claiming they invented anti-aliasing?
  13. Unless someone else here has already done it, i think you're going to have to read the readme. I don't know much more than you on this, just that link address. I'll have a go at installing it, but its on my list of things to do over the christmas holiday. -fissy
  14. ok heres the link i think you should be using: http://rhlx01.fht-esslingen.de/~andi/acx10....2.0pre6.tar.gz there are a lot of packages in that directory so its difficult to tell. Read that readme carefully!
  15. you're on the net now aren't you? transfer by cd to where you need it? i think i must have missed your point :(
  16. i have the 650+ (same thing but in a pcmcia slot) i've never got it working in linux either, drakconnect gives me a module error. Have you tried here? http://acx100.sf.net
  17. its happened to me, leaving it long enough it complains about a package the answer... try getting the cd again.
  18. can logs from the irc room be dug up in anyway? i'd really like to get mine working too
  19. i downloaded the rpms and they had "athlon" in the title suggesting they're optimised for K7. i say again though... they didn't work. i'm using 9.2rc2 and installed the rpm by double clicking on it. I can't remember what version the rpm was for, could it be that its meant for a different kernel version than 9.2, should that make a difference in this case?
  20. i think i might be having the same problem.... using the wizard in drakconnect, it finds the network controller and acknowledges its nvidia hardware, but after i've finished the wizard the interface doesn't appear in drakconnect. its there but its not. I have installed the RPM from Nvidia's site. ****************************************** Another problem.... i have a speedtouch 330 adsl modem... i've found the mgmt.o file from the net and put it in /usr/share/speedtouch/ then ran the wizard to configure the connection. It then won't then connect and pressing the connect button in drakconnect does nothing, what am i doing wrong? any help is very much appreciated, fissy
  21. Perhaps I don't really have a right to say this... but if i were a woman i would be really offended by this
  22. Just like to add my voice here :) My laptop worked perfectly too (apart from an annoying bouncing keys glitch, but you guys sorted me out on that) I love my mandrake laptop! fissy
