  1. I've installed the mozex extension for firebird/firefox and am having a problem. I run mandrake 9.2 and firefox. The extension works for irc great, I use it with xchat and when I click on an irc link it opens up xchat and goes to the channel just like clockwork. I should say that if I run Firefox as root the mailto will work great, but when running it as a user (as I do) it doesn't. Now the problem is with the mailto part. If I click on a mailto link it doesn't do a think, just sits there. I know that its seeing me click the link because at first I had typed the program name wrong I had entered kmaill and it popped up an error window that said kmaill no such program, so I fixed that but it doesn't do a thing. Below is what message I get in my system log file when clicking on a mailto link... Feb 20 18:06:19 localhost gconfd (kenneth-3120): starting (version 2.4.0.1), pid 3120 user 'kenneth' Feb 20 18:06:19 localhost gconfd (kenneth-3120): Resolved address "xml:readonly:/etc/gconf/gconf.xml.mandatory" to a read-only config source at position 0 Feb 20 18:06:19 localhost gconfd (kenneth-3120): Resolved address "xml:readwrite:/home/kenneth/.gconf" to a writable config source at position 1 Feb 20 18:06:19 localhost gconfd (kenneth-3120): Resolved address "xml:readonly:/etc/gconf/gconf.xml.defaults" to a read-only config source at position 2 Feb 20 18:36:20 localhost gconfd (kenneth-3120): GConf server is not in use, shutting down. Feb 20 18:36:20 localhost gconfd (kenneth-3120): Exiting Feb 20 18:38:20 localhost gconfd (kenneth-3213): starting (version 2.4.0.1), pid 3213 user 'kenneth' Feb 20 18:38:20 localhost gconfd (kenneth-3213): Resolved address "xml:readonly:/etc/gconf/gconf.xml.mandatory" to a read-only config source at position 0 Feb 20 18:38:20 localhost gconfd (kenneth-3213): Resolved address "xml:readwrite:/home/kenneth/.gconf" to a writable config source at position 1 Feb 20 18:38:20 localhost gconfd (kenneth-3213): Resolved address "xml:readonly:/etc/gconf/gconf.xml.defaults" to a read-only config source at position 2 Feb 20 18:44:21 localhost gconfd (kenneth-3213): GConf server is not in use, shutting down. Feb 20 18:44:21 localhost gconfd (kenneth-3213): Exiting so to me (i'm still a pretty new linux user) it looks like its maybe a readwrite error somewhere ?? guessing here. anyone have any ideas ??
  2. How do you register a protocol in mandrake ? For example when I click on a IRC link I receive the following message "irc is not a registered protocol" so how and where would I register IRC as a protocol so that it would open up xchat when I would click on a irc link ? I'm using mandrake 9.2 and for a browser firefox 0.8 I've tried using mozex extension before but it would not work for me at all, not the mailto, irc or any of the other things. thanks for everyones time and trouble
  3. I've searched and searched so hopefully i'm not asking a stupid question. I'm trying to find out how to set up firebird to open up kmail when i click a mail link in a web page. Currently when I click a mail link in a web page I get the following error "mailto is not a registered protocol". I figure I need to goto konqueror--settings--configure konqueror--file associations but from there i'm lost, not for sure what i need to enter or under what. Am I on the right track or completely off?? ps: I've tried the mozex extension but it doesn't work , nothing at all happens when i click on a mailto link
  4. thanks for the help :) Works great doing that way, I had found after quite a bit of searching exactly what you suggest about doing it manually. I know I kinda posted at a bad time with it being the holidays and all. I do appreciate the response and answer. I also finally figured out another way to do it by going to drakconnect and setting up another profile. Called it crossover and ran the wizzard to set it up putting in a static ip, so now all I have to do is switch profiles when ever I need to transfer files. Thanks again for the help :)
  5. iptables only runs at boot and sets the rules that are used. I know i was thinking the same thing, that if it says stopped that it meant that the firewall wasn't running, but thats not true. iptables is run when you boot to set the rules , only time that it is run after boot is if you change your rules, at least thats how it was explained to me. You can check to see if your rules are working by going to grc.com, at least thats where i check, amoung other sites.
  6. What I would like to do is connect my laptop (running mandrake 9.2) and my desktop (running xp home) using a crossover cable. Laptop is currently hooked to the cable modem direct and the crossover would only be used for transfering files once in awhile (when i get home off the road) I have the desktop setup with an ip of 192.168.130.1 What i need help with is setting up the laptop. I did set it up using drakconnect making another profile for the crossover cable but when i tried to switch the profile back to the default profile (the one that mandrake set up auto when i installed mandrake) something got screwed up and i couldn't connect to the net at all, so i did a fresh install of 9.2 to fix things. (Yes i know not what most would of done but then i'm a new linux user so still have the windows mentality of reinstall i guess). So I guess what i'm asking is how do I set up the laptop (the mandrake machine) so that I would be able to easily switch back and forth between using the crossover cable when needed and then the cable modem (internet). Should i just need to create another profile in drakconnect ?? and if so maybe someone could give me some kind of step by step instructions. Also if thats the way I need to do it, when switching profiles how should i do it ?? click the profile I want and then apply or what?? If I need to make a new profile what all would I need to set , looks like lots of things to set ?? Maybe I'm not even going about things right. All suggestions and help would be greatly appreciated. PS: don't need internet connection sharing. Thought about a router but don't really need one as I'm home about four days a month and don't have a need to have both computers hooked to the net at the same time, so crossover cable seemed the best way to go. thanks again in advance
  7. sorry I took so long to get back and reply. using mandrake 9.2 kernel 2.4.22-10mdk after some research i decided i'm going to go with a crossover cable and went and got one. I set it up and it worked great, except for one problem, something that i setup wrong. I used drakconnect to set up the connection as a new profile. but when i tried to switch back to the default profile i could never get connected back to the net, so somewhere i set something up wrong. Maybe someone knows of a site that gives step by step instructions being able to switch between a direct connection to cable modem and then unhooking that and hooking up to the crossover cable and back. thanks for the help and suggestions in advance. ps: hehe one reason it took me a couple days to get back is that once i couldn't get back on the net i just reinstalled mandrake 9.2 fresh, took a little bit to get things set back up the way i liked them.
  8. Has anyone had any sucess in using the Genelink Pc to Pc transfer usb cable with mandrake (linux) ?? I am a pretty new linux user, been using for about four weeks now. I can get mandrake to see the cable but thats as far as I am able to get. I will say that mandrake has to be one of the easiest installing OS's i've seen, was easier than windows ever was and this was on a laptop (HP n3290). Think if more windows users knew how easy mandrake was to install and setup that linux would be used alot more. Well thanks for your time and trouble.
