can i burn the install disc to a CDRW? I'll be using it to install mandrake 9.1, James
-
I don't think i have a driver compiled for the kernel, i only included ethernet support but didn't select a driver, i had no idea what my card was, i do now though. I also need to recompile the kernel to remove the driver for my sound card so i can install alsa and i need to change something to make X run better when i install it. I know what to include for the network card now. Anything else i should change? Do i compile these as modules? or into the kernel? James

Aahh you got hit by the Micro$oft Tax You don't need to use that disc, i've setup networks at LAN parties that work fine. It made the disc but i didn't use it! Anyway WHATS WRONG WITH ME?? I'm defending micro$oft!!! James

I included support for ethernet cards in the kernel compile. Did i have to include a driver too? Looks like i've got a kernel compile coming up.... Do i just follow the LFS instructions again? or do i have to do it differently? James
-
I just neet my /dev/eth0 I followed the instructions in the LFS book exactly. I ran the MAKEDEV script and all. If devfs is having all devices as files, yes. I do have devfs. It's just missing /dev/eth0 All my hdd partitions are there /dev/hda1,5,6,7, my sound card /dev/dsp/ everything i think except my /dev/eth0. My network card

Hi I've been working on a LFS system. The system is up and running and i'm trying to get my internet connection working. My cable modem is connected to my computer via ethernet adn uses DHCP. I have no problems except the is no /dev/eth0 on my LFS. Where is it? How can i get it again? can i copy the one off my Mandrake linux? James

You might find somethin on freshmeat.net Look through here for some Rosegarden RPM's http://www.google.com.au/search?hl=en&ie=U...le+Search&meta= Then you don't have to compile yourself. James

I used Mozilla 1.4 beta and it was very stable, had it's quirks but was very very good. If you want download the RPM of the older one so you can remove it. The downloaded RPM is in case anything goes wrong you can revert back. Unlikely. Mozilla is also on your Mandrake discs. So no worry there. Maybe just keep em together for a while then remove the older one. Good luck! James

Istalling RedHat 9 on an NForce2
iphitus replied to ral's topic in Other Linux and Unix Distributions
I had a friend with an Nforce board, his Mandrake install went fine and all worked. -
Welcome Don't worry, we all were newbies to linux/unix once. Flamed? Never! You posted coz you wanted help and that's what you'll get!! Post if you have any problems you can't overcome. Galeon needs Mozilla 1.3.1 because it uses mozilla to render pages. If you have The new Mozilla 1.4, you won't need Galeon. Use the RedHat RPM if you want. Where did you get it? I might like it Good luck! James

Me too! They didn't mention anything abut OpenOffice(ok it's nearly the same as star) or Koffice. And there are a lot of good individual applications like Abiword. Like you said, not acknowledged because they are free. However not all the writers ther are mindless microsoft drones, i have seen good articles. Though most seem to be drones James

I tried links for a while once. I couldn't live without moziila tabs. I use Firebird now. Desktop? I like Enlightenment. I might be trying XFCE though
-
Don't worry Have you tried using Gnome or IceWM instead of KDE? It might be KDE... James
-
Welcome to the board!! Does the monitor turn off? or does it just go blank? What happens with the shutdown command Gowator reccomended? Try GNOME/IceWM or another environment (change it at the login) and see what happens. James Edit: I just noticed you're a melbournian too! whereabouts do you live?

It sounds like lee-ucks in that to me. But i see how you could get it wrong, it's close, maybe even halfway between icks and ucks. James

Installing new kernel without changing boot graphics
iphitus replied to Ixthusdan's topic in Installing Mandriva
While working on my Linux From scratch i found this: http://hints.linuxfromscratch.org/hints/bootlogo.txt I think it applies here too or could be of use. James -
Here is the Mandrake hardware compatibility database http://www3.mandrakelinux.com/en/hardware.php3 If you decide to get a new one, make sure it's been known working by looking there. The Database includes many models that do and don't work. Hope it helps James

In nautilus, using the side pane you can place notes in there. However these apply to the whole folder. YOu could put something in like: asdf.tar.gz = ASDF mozilla.tar.gz = Mozilla Source Etc. James

Have a look in Mandrakes compatibility database http://www3.mandrakelinux.com/en/hardware.php3 James

With my cable internet i get a new IP address at random, sometimes i keep it for a day, sometimes for a week, it's so i can't setup a big webserver, to do that i need to go buy one of the ISP's big expensive corporate plans. I'll try mldonkey for a while, it seems to work. James

Try mozilla firebird It's a lighter mozilla. Taken out Mail, Composer and the Irc client. Other stuff has been changed to speed it up. It runs really fast compared to Mozilla on my machine. http://www.mozilla.org/projects/phoenix/ or RPMs http://rpm.pbone.net/index.php3?stat=3&sro...it=1&dl=40&dist James

I was coming from windows, no linux experience at all. i had a lot of problems but i persevered. I've had about 3-4 installs in the last 3 months. I botched an mdk 8.2, something got badly stuffed, still don't know, it only lasted a week. I tried a redhat, the installer stuffed, i tried again, installer stuffed again and i lost everything. I tried 9.0, worked great, had it going for weeks, until i made the stupid mistake of forcing a particular RPM, couldn't restore that one, i forced glibc2.3 I got 9.0 up and running the next weekend, and a few weeks later upgraded to 9.1. Still running. But i may not have got this far or even be using it now if i didn't have help from everyone here. i've come a long way, and linux has become the primary OS on my computer. Thanks all James
