Guess I don't understand why all the other entries in the .desktop file are needed if there are none now. Why not create a .desktop with just the one entry: kwin --replace & Please pardon my ignorance.

Any idea what the name of the "GTK devel" is, gtk-devel or some such? By the way, what I was trying to compile was btnx, a great utility for the more advanced mouse, to assign mouse button combinations to things. From time to time I check the Easy-Urpmi link on the top of this page, looking for some yummy 2008.1 (or 2008 Spring) entry in the dropdown. No joy yet. :sad:

With Mandriva 2008 Spring, what package would I need to download to fulfill the dependency gtk+-2.0 >= 2.10.11 ? I may need to wait anyway, since no online repositories are yet available. In the meantime, I am happily seeding away. :)

Good question. I stopped updating my system after the last update I applied wiped me out, and also damaged the previous working version so that I couldn't even select the previous one from the grub menu. I had to restore from backups. I find it more dangerous to apply updates than not to.

Has anybody gotten the symbols for integration and summation to work right in MathType using wine? It seems to work ok except for some symbols. Is there some font that can be added? [moved from Software by spinynorman]

I might like that mcc change, but I don't dare update my system any more. That last time I did, Mandriva trashed my gui and also trashed the other grub menu entries so my only fallback position was to go to dvd backups to get my system back. I find it a lot safer to put up with any vunerabilities that might exist than to risk having Mandriva destroy my system in the update process. I understand that the update problem might be fixed in 2008.1. There was a time that Mandriva wouldn't automatically update the kernel. Maybe that was a good plan.

Yes, forgot to say, 2008.0. I think the problem may be Nvidia driver related. It may have done something to the dkms modules. I just saw a thread on the Mandriva forum: http://forum.mandriva.com/viewtopic.php?t=80350 which seems to indicate that I am not alone.

Did the usual update yesterday evening and noticed that it included kernel updates. I didn't think it usually did that. Anyway, I competed the update but unfortunately forgot to reboot my system at the time. So, it was only this morning that I noticed that a reboot failed. It didn't boot into KDE. When I logged on it got some kind of "keychain" error. When I tried a startx I got all kinds of errors back to the screen, so I was stuck in terminal mode. I was also unable to do a startx from any of the previous grub entries for previous kernels. It seems this update totally hosed my system. So, I kicked off a full system restore from my most recent backup just before I left for work. Guess I'll find out later today whether it was successful or not.

I installed 2 Alpha in dual boot mode, but it wiped out my grub.lst and I had to edit it by hand to get access to my 2008.0 back. I also couldn't get it to recognize my second monitor, but didn't spend much time on it. At that point I was already tired of dual booting, so thought I would try again using VirtualBox. I got VirtualBox installed, but haven't had a chance yet to try to install 2001.1a as a vm. What mirrors is one supposed to use for updates, installations, etc?

Yeah, Critter Cam 1 is pointed at the piano. Problem with that cam on the deck is that the raccoons keep screwing with the camera. They get hold of the power cable and start yanking on it. I even had the cables stapled down with these heavy duty industrial staples. But, they yanked so hard on it that they pulled the staples out and broke the camera mount a couple of nights ago. I have to take a trip to the hardware store this weekend to try a different mounting arrangement. It is hard to make things raccoon proof. In the meantime, I thought I should point the camera at something..... sometimes one of my cats is on the piano. Since the mount is broken, I put the camera upside down and inverted and mirror-imaged the picture.

A really well done article. The only thing I don't understand is, how you really feel about hardware with Open Source / Free Software drivers. :huh:

Greg2: I'll hang out a sign and tell the critters to make noise. Come to thing of it, I don't remember if this particular ip cam has audio or not. This cam can be viewed at http://www.netrocam.com, selecting Critter Cams from the left menu. This particular cam is Critter Cam 2. neddie: This particular cam is right outside my apartment's front door pointed at a food dish that I keep filled. Cam was just relocated there a few days ago. Normal critters are opossums, raccoons and cats. Most of the activity is at night (EST). I use my own WebCamWatcher to take a snapshot every 15 seconds. (Available for download at http://www.netrocam.com) This software can also replay the individual jpgs in a rudimentary fashion, but grouping them into one mpg is much nicer. (Note to self: Did I upload the newest version of WebCamWatcher after fixing that bug last week? Don't think so..... :sad: Sigh.....)

Yep, that worked for me too. Good quality and speed. :) I'm creating the mpg from around 4000 jpgs, so it takes a bit longer, but is dramatically faster than convert, and also faster than my other attempt which was: echo *.jpg | xargs jpeg2yuv -f 25 -I p -j critters%06d.jpg | mpeg2enc -f 3 -b 3000 -q 9 -o CritterCam2.m2v Thanks much! I already wiped out my jpegs, so I'll try the mpeg4 with tomorrows batch. (Edit: Hmmmm, how come that codebox is so big?)

Thanks! Yep it worked. There is a limit to the number of jpg files one can concatenate into an mpg because of command line parameter limitations (buffer size). So, I have to create several mpg files and then concatenate them using mpgtx. Now I'll investigate something that works faster than the convert verb. Thanks again!

I know it is not a Mandriva bug. It is just a bug in a program included by default in the distribution. Thought folks here might have an idea how to get the original mpeg2encode that the convert program wanted, or otherwise perhaps suggest a fix or workaround.
