  1. Please install kernel-desktop586-devel-latest which should correct this problem & the problem with your nvidia post.
  2. If you haven't already done so you need to install the kernel devel sources for your particular kernel. To find out which kernel you need the headers for type in a console 'uname -r' and then select the corresponding sources within mcc.
  3. It's a pity we can't kick up a stink about it. Goodness knows M$ has had my money for a number of years before I discovered a much better option. Linux. :D
  4. Update: user agent switcher allows editing and posting new emails. I'm gonna stay a bit longer.
  5. Bye Bye Hotmail. I can no longer send emails as the interface has just been changed. The only reason I kept it on was for IM as a few of my contacts or with M$ and won't change.
  6. It's a bit nuts having all these kernels. :)
  7. It happens to us all. If anyone says different well I beg to differ. Glad it's sorted for you.
  8. Maybe because the package is called kdewebdev ;)
  9. Notice the times, mdkapplet is checking here. and here ntpd is also taking time. Both of these would suggest slow internet traffic. The reason I don't know, but maybe it will give you a clue.
  10. Well Chris I have just installed kdewebdev yesterday as I use quanta myself, although I installed both quanta and kdewebdev. I am using 2009.0 and kde 3.5
  11. Not wishing to pass the buck, but if you really want to learn about anything to do with HTML, websites you might try Here
  12. Yes it's KDE that draws the windows for all your applications, are you saying alt+f3 doesn't work ? If that is so then you can copy your back-up folder to your home directory and you will be back as you were before changing anything. Don't forget the dot before the folder name. :D
  13. If you have right clicked on the window border and selected No Border then pressing alt+f3 together should give you the window pop up menu, selecting advanced from the menu you should see the No Border option has a tick beside it. Untick it and you should have the border back. If this does not happen for you I wonder are you using metisse or compiz? Sorry Spinynorman I missed the thread on the sound problem.
  14. To access your window borders press alt+f3. As for the sound problem I can't help without more information, maybe something in your syslog will give us a clue.
  15. I just tested my account as yours it's from way back when. There is a page asking me to upgrade but I just disregard it and all works well enough.
  16. That's how I read the post Adam, as a personal preference. For users like yourself that can get out of a messed up xorg.conf there's no problem. Myself I take it as if the test gives me no display or a screwed up display then I have made a bad choice somewhere and If I wait a few seconds it will put the display back to being usable again. Easier than finishing up not having a login screen if you know what I mean? That's what I like about Linux choices. :)
  17. Well you seem to have dug yourself into a hole here. My suggestion is :- Boot up into safe mode only. At the prompt cd /etc/X11 ls -l ( the l is a lowercase L) Here you will see a bunch of xorg.conf files, some with a backup extension or mdvxxx extension. That is mdv with a number following it. Now you can either delete your current xorg.conf or rename it to something else, whichever you do it wants to go. Look for the xorg.conf.mdvxxx with the oldest date and mv xorg.conf.mdvxxx xorg.conf This should give you a working GUI desktop as it was when you installed. Reboot. When in the Graphical Desktop, launch drackonf(aka Configure Your Computer). When that is up and running select your software management and remove anything you have installed with regards to Nvidia, drivers, kernels etc. Once the dust has settled and you have your software listing back select dkms-nvidia173 which is the module for Geforce FX cards, and apply. From there answer the prompts that follow with OK. This should install the correct 'devel' packages and the 'dkms' package for you. If they are successful, I see no reason why they shouldn't, quit software management and open hardware and 'Set up the graphical server'. Your card should already be selected, either way select it even if it is already selected, and you will then be asked if you wish to use a 'propriety driver' answer yes and the necessary packages will be installed. Just follow the instructions to logout and back in again when all this is finished. You should now be back in the graphical desktop with the new driver and nvidia kernel installed. This you can check by looking at your /etc/X11/xorg.conf for the driver nvidia as opposed to nv . I hope this helps.
  18. I'm surprised to here the test option being a bit choosy Adam. I have always used it and found it to work. Just lucky I guess. I do find it useful as I invariably work with twin screens on a Nvidia FX5200. I must congratulate you guys on the packaging as installing the drivers, kernel is a breeze now. Thinking what I went through to install Nvidia a few releases back. I actually compiled the kernel for 2008.1. Maybe because I didn't look close enough at the repos. :D
  19. Not much in the way of choice then :D
  20. You could start at http://www.GNOME-Look.org There is plenty of eye candy there as well. And be creative, let your talents run free.
  21. Ah, I did uninstall Sane along with a few others belonging to Sane but had to leave the libs as they wanted to take a bucket load of others as well. I then went through what I could find relating to the desktop icons and deleted anything to do with sane. It's now gone. [solved] you could say.
  22. Thank you Ian. I'd rather have some on the desktop as a quick way of launching them. Lazy I suppose. The one I was asking about is put on the desktop automatically everytime I boot up and is done by a process called dynamic and the problem is it puts a rather long and silly name for the icon associated with XSane. I prefer kooka to Sane for what little scanning I do so it looks like I'll have to uninstall it. Thanks Anyway.
