  2. Yay! again I did it. :D Just as an aside doing all that typing in the terminal is quite daunting for me so what I did :P was open the Kate editor and typed out what I thought was the script. That way I felt I was still in some sort of control of the situation (I like being in control :)). Then I found that you could open a terminal from that little square box in the bottom left hand corner (cool!) so I copied and pasted the five lines from the Kate text into the terminal line by line (typing in <y> when it asked me if I wanted to overwrite. Anyway it worked. Is this juniorburger hacking that I am practicing? :D I suspect there are some very clever people ¨in there¨ that are having giggle about this - I hope so. This is fun! Thanks again for your advice. By the way will this technique work on that evil looking billygoat with the horns and big ears?

  4. One of the things I like most about linux is how you can configure its appearnce to suit your own personal tastes (for the most part). Ian, that yellow star menu icon has been driving me nuts since I first started using Mandrake! So thank you very much for posting that tip! I followed your instruction and they worked :D
  5. Thanks - I used urpme to uninstall the old version and just unpacked the new tarball like you said. I am glad I took your advice. This new version is really slick. ;)
  6. I managed it. I think I was reading to much stuff when I first tried those Tarballs. :D The only thing is I installed in my home folder. Then I just put am icon on the Kicker. Is this OK? Its working well - I am posting this message using it.

  10. Thank you - I think I´ll leave things as they are. I do have FIrefox installed so I migh also try the new version of that browser.
  11. I like using Konqueror as a web browser. I would like to update to the latest version however I would like to know if I have to update anything else like the KDE and Kernel versions. I have read a few posts by members who have experienced problems when updating KDE and the Kernel. I dont´t want that to happen to me :D. I have after several months got my linux box doing nearly everything that I want it to do so my questions are: Is it worth updating Konqueror Do I have to update KDE and/or the Kernel or should I leave well alone. Currently I have Konqueror 3.2.3 on KDE 3.2.3. My Kernel version is 2.6.8.1-10mdk. All advice appreciated.

I think I´ve done it - see attached screenshots. :D I am not quite sure how but this is what I did: Installed Client for Microsoft Works¨ on the win 98 machine and allowed file and printer sharing. Turned the firewall off in Mandrake Control Centre. Changed the Samba configuration settingd from ¨nmblookup¨ to ¨smblookup¨ (because my network neighbourhood is configured uncommonly ) Thanks everyone for your support. Windows_Network.doc
  13. Have you thought about splitting the files onto floppies with something like this programme? http://freebyte.com/hjsplit/#linux It looks like you can use the windows app to split them and the linux version to merge them. :unsure:
  14. Thanks I´ll give it a try (after I get this network up ;) ) :D LOL, yeah I know what you mean... I found that if you got a nic card for win98 you better have access to the drivers o install it and if not you better have an ibm, 3com or dlink card that can be detected else you be spending a nice day searching. what kind of nic is it btw? but yeah definately let me know how it turns out. never know if I may come across that issue in the future! It is a D-Link DFE-528TX. I got rid of the previous one because I just couldn´t install the drivers for it (numerous attempts). I suspect that is why my win 98 box still thinks it has 3 ethernet adapters. :D . I am going to give it a bash shortly. I am re installing the AV software in the windows box.
  15. Gem-in-eyez, thank you once again for your reply. I am reluctant to remove that NIC from the Win98 box - if you knew what I went through to get it installed and working (I can browse the net) and also see the bird´s nest behind my two computers - you would understand :P . It was not by chance that I named myself Ironfighter. The firewall was EZ firewall and AV. I uninstalled it. My understanding is that the router I have has its own firewall - so I shoulldn´t need one? :huh: I think this may take some time - but I will persist. ;) and post my progress.
  16. Gem-in-eyez, sorry for being so hasty in my reply - as you can see below in my post to Aoishin with the Mandrake firewall off, I can indeed ping both ways.
  17. Thank you for your reply aioshin. I tried the Konqueror route and got the following error message: ¨Error while connecting to server responsible for smb://192.168.1.4/¨ I am beginning to think this is a firewall thing. With firewall off I can ping each way. By the way the IP address in my win 98 firewall is 192.168.1.0. My router is 198.168.1.1. I am completely new to networking but this doesn´t look right to me. I think I have to take this one step at a time - perhaps I should concentrate at seeing the win 98 box from the linux box as the first step.
  18. Gem-in-eyez, thank you for your reply. laurie (and laurie@localhost) or 192.168.1.5 (my linux box) cannot be pinged from 192.168.1.4(win 98 box). MCC is Mandrake Control Centre (a GUI tool I have found of great help in setting up my linux box) I have 1 NIC on my win 98 box and 1 NIC on my linux box (thats why I thought the output showing 3 ethernet adapters on my win 98 box was weird)

  21. It appears that I have lost all my contacts in Kmail, Korgansier etc. All I get is recently used email addresses. If I enter a new contact the next time I open the address book the newly entered item has disappeared. Any ideas ?
  22. A word of caution - I am a newbie :D (not an animal) :D but I had a few problems hearing sound on my system. The solution for me was to go into Mandrake Control Centre > Hardware > Hardware > Sound Card > Configure Module. See what options you´ve got and try the alternatives. It worked for me - hope it helps you ;)
  23. Up and running! I bought Linux Format today and I found it had OOo_2.0.0_LinuxIntel_install.tar.gz on the CD. I copied it from the CD into my home directory using Konqueror then followed your instructions (rt*m :D ) and I can now open it from the K menu. Thanks everyone.

  25. Shucks! Thanks solarian - I had a suspicion that I might have done this - but wouldn´t it have been awesome if I had managed it? :D Not to worry - I´ll have another go. Do I just delete the ¨OOA680_ml¨ directory and its contents?
