  1. Sorry scarecrow - not a fair question on my part. I have decided to press on. I am now at the stage where the Windows bootloader gives me an option to boot into XP or Bin. When I select Bin i get a message telling me that I have to re install a file called root/system hal.dll which is either missing or corrupt.
  2. Thanks again scarecrow. Well I've got some good news and some bad news. The good news is that the notebook is now booting straight into XP and everything is intact. :) After reading your latest post I decided to give it a go and, following your instructions managed to move grub to the USB key (sdb1). I then booted from the CD but I couldn't get to a recovery mode screen - instead I go to a "do you want to install XP on the indicated partition". I thought I wander if this will get me to recovery mode? and hit enter. I got to another window which basically said "do you really want to do this" (my language). Thankfully I bottled out - there was a time when I would have kept going but the voices of all those IT guys at work down the years started ringing in my ears - so I escaped out and rebooted without the USB key or CD. I don't know why but it booted straight into Windows  I thought - scarecrow has taken a lot of trouble to help me with this so I'm going to try to follow the rest of his instructions - so I changed the Bios settings again and tried booting from the USB key. I got on a black screen a menu with 4 boot options - the first three Ubuntu options and the last MS Windows XP. So I hit "enter" on the first Ubuntu option and got :- Error 17: Cannot mount selected partition - press any key to continue - which took me back to the boot menu (same result with recovery option). There were some options to edit the various menu items which took me to a command line :- root hd01 - grub bootloader (or something very similar) - at which point I bottled out again. So now my (work) notebook is back to normal but I can't boot into Xubuntu. Perhaps (in the light of your comments about Zenwalk and Sam) I should allocate this USB key to a new project :D. Or do you think I should have another Dip? PS - how do you know if you've got ntfs -3g installed and if you haven't, how do you install it? Cheers.
  3. Thank you very much for your detailed reply scarecrow. That looks like about 4 hours work at my productivity rate. Its going to be 39 degrees here in Melbourne on Thursday and my wife is going shopping. That is when I will take a crack at your # 1 solution. However before I attempt it (excuse my lack of savvy) - how do I move grub into the USB key root partition?. When I've done that Iĺl have a look at Zenwalk and Sam - (USB keys are pretty cheap these days and I am a compulsive tinkerer). Thanks again.
  4. I have just Installed Xubuntu on a 4Gig USB key from the live CD via an XP laptop. I have been learning about linux for the past 3 years and no longer use Windows at home (Mandrake 10.1 Community). The laptop in question is for business use when I need to work from home or when travelling. Therein lies the problem. Since I installed Xubuntu on the USB key the only way I can access XP on the laptop is if I have the Xubuntu USB key inserted during the start up routine. At first glance this seems to be quite an attractive security feature however, I am worried that I may loose the USB key or it becomes corrupt or damaged. I would like to get the laptop to boot up straight into XP without the USB key inserted. I have tried a system restore under XP but it didn't work. From what I can discover from other threads it seems I may be able to edit the boot menu. I would appreciate some advice as to how to resolve this issue. From what I have seen so far Xubuntu is the most user friendly in getting must have applications and utilities (like wireless internet) up and running quickly. (Puppy was the easiest to install) Nevertheless I have stuck with Mandrake on my desktop because it works for me :) Thank you in anticipation.
  5. Help! I am in the middle of trying to do a HD install of Damn Small Linus on an old Satellite Laptop. I have the machine booted up off the DSL live CD and am in Cfdisk. The "Bash" screen currently looks like this: hda 1 Boot Primary Linux Swap 254.99 hda 5 (Blank) Logical Linux 5749.48 The "Write" option is highlighted and beneath it it says :- "Write Partition Table to Disk (this might destroy data). I don't care if I loose the XP operating system at all but I do want to at least use the live CD on this machine. I have a feeling of impending doom - could someone please advise me on my next move. :D [moved from Software by spinynorman]
  6. I work with a company that has a software development subsidiary. They have developed a customised drawing and estimating package that runs on the back of Autocad . :D . My questions are:- 1) Is there an existing emulator that could do this or 2) If there isn't could they develop their own emulator using that stuff you call "source code¨ 3) Is there a better approach than either of the above [moved from Software by spinynorman]
  7. I think this chap can answer all your questions and tell you how to do it - http://biohackery.com/node/4#howto
  8. Hello Tim, I have been having a bit of fun with ab SD card (see my recent posts) and I though I would have alook at your post as our problems are not dissimilar. This is a long shot for your problem but I have found in my meanderings through the linux learning curve that Konqueror is a very newbie friendly peice of software. Have you tried mounting your device through the device manager in the Konqueror Extra Tool Bar? Open Komqueror from Personal Files from the KDE menu. Then > Settings > Toolbars > Show Extra Toolbar > click on the first icon on the left of the Extra Tool Bar and you should have something like that shown in the attcahed screen shot. If you right click on your device there is an option to mount the device from there. Hope this helps - its worth a try :D
  9. Thanks Ian, while I was away i logged out and back in as root - edited the fstab to look like this as you suggested: /dev/hda1 / ext3 defaults 1 1 none /dev/pts devpts mode=0620 0 0 /dev/hda6 /home ext3 defaults 1 2 /dev/hdc /mnt/cdrom auto umask=0,user,iocharset=iso8859-15,codepage=850,noauto,ro,exec,users 0 0 /dev/sdb1 /mnt/hd auto umask=0,user,iocharset=iso8859-15,sync,kudzu,codepage=850,noauto,exec,users 0 0 none /proc proc defaults 0 0 #/dev/app/1/image /tmp/app/1 cramfs,iso9660 user,noauto,ro,loop,exec 0 0 #/dev/app/2/image /tmp/app/2 cramfs,iso9660 user,noauto,ro,loop,exec 0 0 #/dev/app/3/image /tmp/app/3 cramfs,iso9660 user,noauto,ro,loop,exec 0 0 #/dev/app/4/image /tmp/app/4 cramfs,iso9660 user,noauto,ro,loop,exec 0 0 #/dev/app/5/image /tmp/app/5 cramfs,iso9660 user,noauto,ro,loop,exec 0 0 #/dev/app/6/image /tmp/app/6 cramfs,iso9660 user,noauto,ro,loop,exec 0 0 #/dev/app/7/image /tmp/app/7 cramfs,iso9660 user,noauto,ro,loop,exec 0 0 /dev/hda5 swap swap defaults 0 0 /dev/sda1 /mnt/removable auto umask=0022,user,iocharset=iso8859-15,sync,kudzu,codepage=850,noauto,exec,users 0 0 logged back in as myself :D and tried to copy my music to the sd card - and guess what it did. So it must have been those lines in the fstab that now have an # in front of them. Should I just delete those lines and leave the rest the same (in particular the line in red for the sd card) or should I take the plunge and replace it with your line?
  10. Thanks Ian, the card I am workong on at the moment is /dev/sda1 and can be accessed through conqueror via /mnt/removable. I do have another flash card which I can access through konqueror via /mnt/hda which I believe is sdb1. Here is the output from fdisk -l Disk /dev/hda: 8455 MB, 8455200768 bytes 16 heads, 63 sectors/track, 16383 cylinders Units = cylinders of 1008 * 512 = 516096 bytes Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System /dev/hda1 * 1 9452 4763776+ 83 Linux /dev/hda2 9453 16383 3493224 5 Extended /dev/hda5 9453 10467 511528+ 82 Linux swap /dev/hda6 10468 16383 2981632+ 83 Linux Disk /dev/sda: 507 MB, 507379712 bytes 16 heads, 63 sectors/track, 983 cylinders Units = cylinders of 1008 * 512 = 516096 bytes Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System /dev/sda1 1 983 495313+ 6 FAT16 I will try to put the # in front of those lines in the fstab (Can't do it as myself :D ) - back soon
  11. Thanks Ian - Happy New Year. Erm :D here is my fstab - could you tweak it for me please :P /dev/hda1 / ext3 defaults 1 1 none /dev/pts devpts mode=0620 0 0 /dev/hda6 /home ext3 defaults 1 2 /dev/hdc /mnt/cdrom auto umask=0,user,iocharset=iso8859-15,codepage=850,noauto,ro,exec,users 0 0 /dev/sdb1 /mnt/hd auto umask=0,user,iocharset=iso8859-15,sync,kudzu,codepage=850,noauto,exec,users 0 0 none /proc proc defaults 0 0 /dev/app/1/image /tmp/app/1 cramfs,iso9660 user,noauto,ro,loop,exec 0 0 /dev/app/2/image /tmp/app/2 cramfs,iso9660 user,noauto,ro,loop,exec 0 0 /dev/app/3/image /tmp/app/3 cramfs,iso9660 user,noauto,ro,loop,exec 0 0 /dev/app/4/image /tmp/app/4 cramfs,iso9660 user,noauto,ro,loop,exec 0 0 /dev/app/5/image /tmp/app/5 cramfs,iso9660 user,noauto,ro,loop,exec 0 0 /dev/app/6/image /tmp/app/6 cramfs,iso9660 user,noauto,ro,loop,exec 0 0 /dev/app/7/image /tmp/app/7 cramfs,iso9660 user,noauto,ro,loop,exec 0 0 /dev/hda5 swap swap defaults 0 0 /dev/sda1 /mnt/removable auto umask=0022,user,iocharset=iso8859-15,sync,kudzu,codepage=850,noauto,exec,users 0 0 By the way - the last time I looked at my fstab I don't think all those "dev/app/1 to 7 were there, have you got any idea what they are ?
  12. Thanks iphitus. I tried the switch in both positions - it wasn that. I am sure I have it in the correct position now because I can copy files from the SD card to my home folder. Is this a chmod thing? if so I definitely need help. ;)
  13. Hi, I want to transfer some MP3 files from my linux box to an SD card via a USB card reader so that I can play them on a pocket PC. I can read existing files on the SD card through Konqueror but when I try crate a new folder in the card or copy files to it I get the message "Access denied to /mnt/removable/Music. Can anyoune tell me how to change the permissions please?
  14. Answer to question one - not really :D I am using a 4 port modem router via ethernet Ive tried typing su but that didnt work so I set a password as root <passwd> still no good I'll keep trying - if I can get it going using Knoppix 4 CD this must be doable. I will let you know how I go. Thanks again.
  15. Thanks ianw1974 - I appreciate your advice (and would have backed a large amount of money on getting a response from you:) I have done the first two tasks but have two questions about the DNS entry in /etc/resolv.conf a) would an entry like nameserver 192.168.1.1 DNS 203.89.226.24 be appropriate and if so how do I get permissions to save the edited file as itself? Also when I run pppoe I get Interface eth0 has MTU of 64 -- should be 1500. You may have serious connection problems (I have:)) pppoe: Timeout waiting for PADO packets
  16. I know this is a Mandrake forum but I have posted this topic on Knoppix.net with no response as yet so I thought I wonder if those nice (and extremely intelligent) people at Mandrivausers.org can help me with this? :D Here we go: I have been trying out the live DVD on an XP centrino laptop which has on board ethernet (and a wireless connection to our work server). When I boot up the laptop into windows I can just plug the ethernet cable into it and browse the net through a Netcomm Ethernet Plus 4 Modem Router. I am sending this post from another linux machine (Mandrake 10.1) using the same modem router. My problem is I cannot browse the internet at all from the Knoppix live DVD. When I access the modem from the Mandrake machine by entering 192.168.1.1 I get the following output : Home Page BootCode Version: BC_CX82xxx_4.1.0.28 Firmware Version: CX82xxx_4.1.0.38 Customer Software Version: NB1300_6_1038_1SD WAN IP Address Subnet Mask MAC Address 203.214.53.86 255.255.255.0 00:09:F3:08:4F:7B Home Page BootCode Version: BC_CX82xxx_4.1.0.28 Firmware Version: CX82xxx_4.1.0.38 Customer Software Version: NB1300_6_1038_1SD WAN IP Address Subnet Mask MAC Address 203.214.53.86 255.255.255.0 00:09:F3:08:4F:7B LAN IP Address Subnet Mask MAC Address 192.168.1.1 255.255.255.0 00:09:F3:08:4F:7A 192.168.1.1 255.255.255.0 00:09:F3:08:4F:7A Total Number of Lan Interfaces: 1Total Number of Lan Interfaces: 1 Number of ethernet devices connected to the DHCP server: 2 IP Address MAC Address 1 192.168.1.10 00:40:CA:C0:CD:16 2 192.168.1.5 00:01:02:00:28:A9 Ethernet Link Status: UP USB Link Status: DOWNNumber of ethernet devices connected to the DHCP server: 2 IP Address MAC Address 1 192.168.1.10 00:40:CA:C0:CD:16 2 192.168.1.5 00:01:02:00:28:A9 Ethernet Link Status: UP USB Link Status: DOWN From a terminal on the Knoppix live DVD I can ping 192.168.1.1 0% packet loss I cant ping 192.168.1.5 because its firewalled I can ping knoppix.net 0% packet loss If I run ifconfig on the laptop I get amongst other things :- eth0 inet addr: 192.168.10 Bcast: 255.255.255.255 Mask: 255.255.255.0 UP BROADCAST RUNNING MULTICAST mtu:64 METRIC:1 lo inet addr:127.0.0.1 Mask 255.0.0.0 inet6 addr: :: 1/128 Scope Host UP LOOPBACK RUNNING MTU: 16436 Metric 1 If I try running netcardconfig = DHCP broadcast from device eth0Operation failed. Very Happy [moved from Networking by spinynorman]
  17. https://mandrivausers.org/index.php?showtopic=30334 Thanks Arctic - I had used Ians tips once before (when I wanted to change the star to the KDE logo :D ). As I am using Mandrake 10.1 Community version I had to do a bit of juggling because the link is in a sub folder called /usr/share/pixmaps/mdk. I have attached a screenshot (note the gnome icon in the bottom left hand corner :D ) just in case it is of help to anyone else. apbsa - thank you for your encouragement - I am enjoying the gnome experience so far - but as they say beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Peace Linux people ;) and thanks again.
  18. Thanks everyone - I did # urpmi gnome-panel and sure enough the panel came up next time I logged on. I never thought that it might not be installed. To Dexter - IIRC :woops: I suppose you got a laugh out of that - I did. :D Now I have to get rid of that yellow star again - I don't like that star.
  19. Thanks but it didn't work;- [laurie@localhost laurie]$ gnome-panel IIRC bash: gnome-panel: command not found [laurie@localhost laurie]$ su Password: [root@localhost laurie]# gnome-panel IIRC bash: gnome-panel: command not found [root@localhost laurie]# Have I followed you instructions properly?
  20. I am trying Gnome instead of KDE on my desktop - its anyones perogative to change their mind ;) The thing is when I start a gnome session from the login window I get the gnome desktop with three icons - Computer, Home & Wastebasket. Not a sign of the panel. I get round this at the moment by right clicking on the desktop and running the command $kicker in the terminal window. This loads up the KDE panel from my KDE settings. I suppose I could just leave it the way it is but I would prefer to have the gnome desktop do all this for me on login. Can anyone tell me how to do this please.
  21. I have been using linux (Mandrake 10.1) for about 12 months now. I have a netcomm Plus4 Ethernet/USB ADSL modem 4 port router. I think coming from Windows I sort of thought it was going to be difficult to get the internet up and running - so it was :D If your modem is connected to your PC via USB port (as opposed to ethernet cable) you may find that Linux has configured everything during boot up. If so its dead easy - just open a browser window type in 192.168.1.1 and then:- Type in admin as the username Type in password as the password The configuration window for your netcomm modem will appear. IP address 192.168.1.1 Subnetmask 255.255.255.0 User name = whatever your username is with your ISP Password = whatever your password is with your isp WAN Type PPPoE LLC VPI 8 VCI 35 Bridge Disabled Then hit Submit Save Setting and Reboot (on the left hand side of the screen) Connect - the browser status bar starts flashing navy blue If all is well "Not Connected"will change to "Connected" Hit the "home" icon and away you go (I hope) If this fails I guarantee you that ianw1974 will come to your rescue - He is one of the lovely people on this board who help people like me find out how to use Linux :D By the way I would stick with KDE for the time being - it seemed to me that it was the most user friendly for configuration purposes. Since then I sort of got to like Gnome for desktop appearance. (I love them both everybody) :D In KDE you have got to discover the delights of Mandrake Control Centre (MCC) open a terminal and type in MCC - you will get a prompt asking you for your root password (that is because when you get in there you can break things) :D By the way in MCC in the boot menu if you disable autologin I think you may get a choice to choose the session type when you login - there is a drop down menu on my box from which I can choose KDE, Gnome and several other desktops. One last word of advice don´t worry about books hang around hear and find out about URPMI :D - check out the "Easy Urpmi" link at the top of this page. AussieJohn is a lovely fellow also (and smarter than me) ;)
  22. I suppose beauty is in the eye of the beholder. :D Ooops where'd it go - back soon. Gotcha - (forgot to change it to jpeg) :)
  23. Thanks coverup - it is half time Australia V Japan (11:45 in Australia). I will have to have a go at this tomorrow night. I really appreciate your help - I will post tomorrow night.
  24. Sorry if I am confusing you coverup - I have a way of doing that to people :). I would have settled for just copying messages I had in a folder I created in Kmail which I called "Saved" but it seems I ended up with some shared folders. This is no longer the case as I (sad to say in a moment of madness) deleted the "Saved"folder from Kmail. This would be fine with me if Evolution was running properly. So what I have now is Kmail running fine (but with no "Saved" messages) and Evolution running poorly (taking forever to "Fetch mail") but with all my saved messages. Regarding your second question: I though I might have done this - so that is what I was looking for / trying to delete. I think I have probably created enough havoc with my current set up to warrant removing all the current folders and settings for Evolution and starting afresh but the only place I can access my "Saved" messages from is Evolution. Perhaps I should change my tag Line to something like "I am in a maze of my own creating" I could give up on this I suppose and just settle for using Kmail but I don't really want to do that. So I suppose I have got to figure out what I am going to do with that "Saved" folder an the messages it contains.
