  1. Phunni, Not sure where the setting is, but there surely must be one in the interface on Evolution to set your gpg to always encrypt to self or something to that effect. If you don't do that, you cannot reopen / decrypt the emails you have sent in the past! I made that mistake when I first started using pgp on DOS years ago!
  2. My encryption button was "greyed out" until I set my id in the COMPOSER window. Kmail--HELP (from the menu bar) has a good section on pgp/gpg use. I missed that setting the first time too. Now, if I can figure out why your key won't get selected I'll be there. you are right.. we will get this figured out. "I hate to get beat by a machine!" We can also go manually and gpg the file and paste it into the email, but not so elegant to do it that way, eh?
  3. Not able to read it. It did not seem to have any valid encrypted data, only the phrase version 1 I am trying to get Kmail to work on ML using my PGP key in gpg... I imported ok but for some reason I cannot select your key. I suspect it is the validity setting is not done yet. Trying to set that now and see if that is the problem. On Kmail, when I set it to send and use gpg, it pops up a key box and asks which key to use. There is where I am not able to select your key. I see it, but the OK is greyed out and not available to use.
  4. Lightning has moved out now! Yes, it maybe that the different address will confuse your plugin. In Outlook plugin it will do fine on receive, but you have to manually select the proper key when sending. Probably the same with Evolution.
  5. Phunni, First message is unreadable. I tried to open the *.dat file and it only contained the words "version 1" in clear text. the second attachment when executed opened my passphrase dialog box, but it could not open the *.dat file. Not sure what the issue is, but seems there is not any decryptable text in the first message so it won't read it. Back to the drawing board! Try another one and I'll be back shortly. Another round of lightning is moving thru!
  6. Phunni, Sorry, got tied up on a project here so haven't checked in for a time. I don't use Evolution so not sure how the plugin works. You must tell gnupg what key to use and you must have added that key to your "keyring" first. Did you add my key to your key ring? I am going to resend my key to you in an .asc format just to be sure you get it ok, but I think it should have worked the other way too. Go ahead and send your key to me via separate email, and I will add it to my keyring here and send an encrypted message to you.
  7. Phunni, Go ahead and send me a PGP email whenever you are ready and I'll let you know if I can open it. Be sure to include your public key or send it by separate email! Btw, I have used PGP on Windows for 10+ yrs so pretty used to it there, but am new to gnupg. The cmd lines have similar features, but I have used gui frontends and plugins for last 8 yrs at least so haven't had to be good at the syntax side. :)
  8. Just sent you my PGP key via your hotmail acct. My email is on the pgp key. This is from my Windows box running PGPi 7.0.4 so you can test cross platform. I think this version will work, but some others may not. According to gnupg.org site it should work: I am about ready to turn in for the night, so might not be able to get back with you right away. But be glad to test this as I will soon be doing the same thing from time to time.
  9. Hey Motts! Sheez a burnin' ! First test at 48x write was A-OK! :D
  10. MottS: Back on again for a few minutes. Still pretty sick here. Need a special antivirus or something... I did run xcdroast as root the first time and have tried again. It shows that it is in "Non-root user mode" but when I type xcdroast from my user prompt it still gives me access denied. Hmmm! Since it refers to on that host I made sure to add localhost to the list but it still denied me access. I did a quick shutdown and restart and it came back up and all is working just fine now. I can access as user and see data from the CDR, etc. Have not tried to burn anything yet as I am a bit light headed and sweaty from breaking another round of fever. But things are looking up! Thanks for sticking with me. It is nice to have a friend standing by when you are wrestling with a problem. You certainly helped me see things that I was missing. Blessings!
  11. MottS: You're the best! Thanks for your patience. I did read the man mount and had some of it figured out and your post helped confirm my understanding. Last evening I got extremely ill with high fever and the works. Had hallucinations that a worldwide computer virus mutated and was making me and 1000's of other internet users ill! Sounds funny, but it was a very long and sleepless night for me! It makes it hard to concentrate and work on this so not sure how much I will try to do today. I installed cdrecord and xcdroast after getting things going. Here is the info you asked about: [kelly@localhost kelly]$ ls -l /usr/bin/cdrecord -rws--x--- 1 root cdwriter 244620 Sep 3 2002 /usr/bin/cdrecord* [kelly@localhost kelly]$ I followed the readme doc from cdrecord and setup a group "cdwriter" but after I did that is when I got sick, so haven't gone much further. /dev/scd0 /mnt/scd0 iso9660 user,noauto,ro,unmask=0 0 0 /dev/scd1 /mnt/scd1 iso9660 user, noauto 0 0 I will go back into fstab and do the same to scd1 which is the CDR When I try xcdroast from the KDE menu, it still gives me "access denied" error! I'll rest a bit and try to figure out where it is "going south." Blessings!
  12. MottS: You sure are a help to me! I am still learning cmd line in linux and it has been a long time since I did much... 79 or so when I starting using DOS so I struggle with the syntax issues. I also note on your fstab (and others I see posted) that you have /dev/scsi/host0/bus0/target1/lun0/cd /mnt/Burner iso9660 noauto,ro,user,umask=0 0 0 Mine fstab for cd burner is: /dev/scd0 /mnt/scd0 iso9660 user, noauto 0 0 I note you have ro before the user,unmask=0 0 0 option Wondering what that is for and if I need to add that too? I also tried to run cdrecord as user and get "access denied" so have a permission problem there too. I'll read the manpage and see if there is a config setting to change that or a file permission that is wrong/incomplete. Sometimes learning is fun, eh?
  13. MottS: Thanks for more input! Hmmm! My fstab is a bit different. I used MCC to create the mount points/set options/users, etc. and saved the changes to fstab via the MCC GUI interface. my burner entry is /dev/scd0 in fstab: /dev/scd0 /mnt/scd0 iso9660 user, noauto 0 0 /dev/scd1 /mnt/scd1 iso9660 user, noauto 0 0 I don't clearly understand the syntax here so will try to read up on it and see if I can understand what's missing and how to set it right. :-) Blessings!
  14. Motts: Thanks for your advice ! I have successfully changed the sources and installed cdrecord and xcdroast. (thanks again to pmpatrick too-- you were right on!) I used Software Source Manager and deleted the distrib CD sources and then put the cd 1 in /dev/scd1 (my cdr) and added them using the urpmi.addmedia command you suggested. Worked great! Now am trying to figure out the configuration for those as I keep getting access denied. Will try a bit more and then post to Software forum. Blessings!
  15. pmpatrick: Thanks for your input! It is about bedtime here! Yes, I need to change those source CD's. Will see if I can do that in the morning. I think that I should be able to use a sym link to point to it too. That might save me from having to redo all the audio settings and setup too. Anybody out there that can point me in the right direction on that? ls /mnt looks like this: [kelly@localhost kelly]$ ls /mnt cdrom/ disk/ floppy/ scd0/ scd1/ windows/ Seems /mnt/cdrom/ does not really get pointed to anything since I changed things to the scsi settings. So I need to figure out what to do about that. It will seem simpler in the morning.
  16. First time to try this and have read HOW TO and several similar posts but am still a bit lost. Running 9.0 and KDE 3.0.5a with latest updates. 1) Installed new Liteon CDRW as Master on IDE2 and took CDR off master and made it Slave on IDE2. 2) Appended lilo.cfg and made BOTH drives scsi see results: boot=/dev/hda map=/boot/map vga=normal default=linux keytable=/boot/us.klt prompt nowarn timeout=100 message=/boot/message menu-scheme=wb:bw:wb:bw ignore-table image=/boot/vmlinuz label=linux root=/dev/hda5 initrd=/boot/initrd.img append="quiet devfs=mount hdc=ide-scsi hdd=ide-scsi" vga=788 read-only image=/boot/vmlinuz label=linux-nonfb root=/dev/hda5 initrd=/boot/initrd.img append="devfs=mount" read-only image=/boot/vmlinuz label=failsafe root=/dev/hda5 initrd=/boot/initrd.img append="failsafe devfs=nomount" read-only other=/dev/hda1 label=windows table=/dev/hda other=/dev/fd0 label=floppy unsafe 3) Then using MCC, disabled supermount, (as suggested by many), and created mount points for scd0 and scd1 4) This made changes to fstab as follows: /dev/hda5 / ext3 defaults 1 1 none /dev/pts devpts mode=0620 0 0 /dev/hda8 /home ext3 defaults 1 2 none /mnt/floppy supermount dev=/dev/fd0,fs=auto,--,iocharset=iso8859-1,sync,codepage=850,umask=0 0 0 /dev/scd0 /mnt/scd0 auto user,noauto 0 0 /dev/scd1 /mnt/scd1 auto user,noauto 0 0 /dev/hda1 /mnt/windows vfat iocharset=iso8859-1,codepage=850,umask=0 0 0 none /proc proc defaults 0 0 /dev/hda7 /usr ext3 defaults 1 2 /dev/hda6 swap swap defaults 0 0 Then I wanted to install cdrecord and xcdroast but using Install Software GUI it asks to insert cd2 in hdc and now it doesn't exist/respond. Here is my cd device config: [kelly@localhost kelly]$ dmesg | grep CD hdc: LITE-ON LTR-48246S, ATAPI CD/DVD-ROM drive hdd: CD-956E/AKV, ATAPI CD/DVD-ROM drive Type: CD-ROM ANSI SCSI revision: 02 Vendor: E-IDE CD Model: -956E/AKV Rev: A92 Type: CD-ROM ANSI SCSI revision: 02 Attached scsi CD-ROM sr0 at scsi0, channel 0, id 2, lun 0 Attached scsi CD-ROM sr1 at scsi0, channel 0, id 3, lun 0 Uniform CD-ROM driver Revision: 3.12 [kelly@localhost kelly]$ What am I doing wrong? Do I need to create or change a sym link somewhere? Thanks for help sorting this out-- I am going in slow circles and not seeing what I am doing wrong.
  17. Sorry I was offline and am just now back again. I'm in SE Asia so we may have a big time difference between us. Looks like everyone gave you very good info! I'm with Richard L. -- my first post was brief as I was leaving for a time and I wanted to help you get started. Normally I tend to keep it simple. Richard and the others did a great job. Enjoy Opera-- you'll no doubt find some web pages and java sites that will look strange or not function 100%. That's just Opera. For the most part it is no problem, don't let it frustrate you. It does the same in Windoze too.
  18. Static issue will avoid dependency issues and is what I am running here. Suggest you might want to download 6.12 that has just been released as it is better than 6.11 from all reports so far. Improved fonts, etc which would be a blessing... 6.1 is a bit coarse until you tweak it. I like to copy the rpm to hd and run from there, but you can do it from the cd too or create a directory, add it as a new source and urpmi it if you want. You might want to read man rpm, man urpmi.addmedia, urpmi and some of the urpmi how to's in the Doc section of this board and the Old MUO board as they will really help you understand how to use these tools. It helped me to print them because reading them on screen seemed to stretch them out and I could not always relate to what they were saying.

    RPC vulnerable?

Thanks b!! Good info! Yes, I have pretty much shut most services down per normal security procedures, but the portmap seems to still be running and initiates the rpc. I have a hunch it is from the Java plugins I installed for my browser. I almost downloaded Snort and put in on last weekend! Then I saw this alert today and yikes! I am seeing lots of internet sites hit by DOS and think there is some sort of major attack going on again. Too bad. I don't want to leave the door open for someone to use my machine if I can help it.

    RPC vulnerable?

http://www.securityfocus.com/archive/96/31...02/2003-03-08/0 From this, it looks like there is a possible threat to anyone running Snort at this point. Still not sure if RPC needs to always be running or not. Anyone know?

    RPC vulnerable?

http://www.computerworld.com/securitytopic...1,79015,00.html ://http://www.computerworld.com/securi...,79015,00.html ://http://www.computerworld.com/securi...,79015,00.html Older versions of Snort are vulnerable according to this article. I notice RPC is running all the time on my system and wonder if is a vulnerability? I really don't fully understand if RPC is needed all the time-- the manpage is a bit over my level of knowledge. Can someone tell me how to secure RPC? Does it have to run in the background all the time? It appears to be port mapping on the local box. I run ML 9.0 behind a 4 port router/cable modem connection with plain ML security settings. No LAN setup at this point though router is used by a laptop for biz email via vpn that I haven't figured out how to do in ML yet. TIA for any ideas/input.
  22. To be more scientific I actually timed my boot this am: 07:30:52 started 07:31:32 to eth0 startup (hd activity but not much) 07:32:40 eth0 finished booting continues 07:33:06 login to X 07:33:55 KDE 3.0.5a loaded and ready to go Total 3:00:03 to boot... I don't have any servers or other services installed, just a basic workstation config. For fun, I started my WinME laptop (business use) at same time. It beat ML by about 10 seconds, but because I have a registry backup utility it ends up about the same before you can use it. It shares the cable connection via a router that provides dhcp
  23. Don't have any good ideas on how to speedup, but my 9.0 on cable takes about 30-45 sec on the eth0 part of booting. The modem and router have an IP and are synched, but my cpu sits there for a time until it wakes up. I figure it is just part of the boot process, but 2 min sounds too long. Can seem like an eternity. Wonder if it is RAM and CPU dependent too? I run AthlonXP 1.6 and 512MB PC2100 DDR RAM with 266 FSB here.
  24. I have same result on my 3.0.5a Konqueror browser. Not able to input on front page, but can after hitting the login button and going to second page. I checked http://my.yahoo.com and it works ok. That might indicate something different in the code on that sign in box. Since recent Mandrake Update to this KDE version, I have had several glitches in Konq that seem related to Java. I had to shut it off globally and do without it as it spawned each applet into separate windows. Wierd! I mostly use Opera because I haven't gotten Konq to run too well.

    XXX magic cookie ?

That security announcement/release dealing with magic cookie came out on 14 Feb so right after you asked about it. LOL... That is what made me think you were prophetic!
