  1. I want to reinstall xfsprogs to see if I can beat an irritating xfs crash that pops up now and then. My questions are: Is it best to use the command: rpm -Fvh <package name> ? -- or -- should I use rpm -Uvh <package name> ? -- and-- Should I also add "--allfiles" option? or is "--replacefiles" a better option for doing the overwrites? I am not real clear after reading the rpm man page. What I want to do is overwrite the current files to take care of a possible corrupt file that I think might be the source of my xfs problem. Or is there a way to use urpmi to do this? Preparing to take a leap into the unknown... Once again... I breathlessly await your input!

Great! Earlier you wrote: Here you go... Close enough? Try "View more Emoticons"

Good you are making progress! Selamat! (congratulations!) Until you get documentation installed, you can see the Gnu Linux HOW TO files on Time Precision at: http://www.tldp.org/HOWTO/TimePrecision-HO...OWTO/index.html That site has lots of helpful info, though some is outdated and it is not Mandrake specific either. Just drop to the homepage www.tldp.org and browse a bit. I don't have access to my cd's right now, but check in the Configuration--Packaging--Install Software section and see if you can install the documentation files. Hope they are not on CD 3. (try to get this if you can) I think they are under workstation in a Documentation folder. That will help you find info like this as well as some configuration tips, etc. Happy computing!

More than you ever wanted to know about time setting: file:/usr/share/doc/HOWTO/HTML/en/TimePrecision/ntp.html IF you installed documents when installing Mandrake you can access it thru K--Documentation-- How To's ! :) If you did not install the docs, they are on the cd's and you can install them or read them from the cd. You can setup a time daemon to run at boot if you want to do so. Use MCC or the command line sequence in the above article. It is a bit trickier on a dual boot system since Windows will reset the clock for you in some cases. The How To describes this.

    k3b help

http://k3b.sourceforge.net/index.php?page=faq.html Ixthusdan is right... the quote above is from the K3b FAQ. Don't give up on this... I had to fiddle with K3b too and it made a mess out of my /etc/fstab file in the process. But I CAN burn, mount and umount as a regular user! So it will work. It is just a matter of finding what is not set quite right and making the correction. We're here to help you fix that doggy!

chris z: Congrats... you're hanging in there and overcoming the learning curve. It takes some time to change habits. You'll be glad you paid the price to learn though as there are lots of tweaks that you can do yourself. Also, once Mandrake is setup, it tends to run well without constant naggy BSOD's! :)
  7. Dragonmage: Thanks for the confirmation! I test ran it in USB by modprobe and all seems to work fine. I wasn't sure if the gameport would be better or not, but since it is via Creative SB Live! I figured it might take some magic to make it work well.
  8. Almost posted this in games. Mods: if you think it fits there-- please feel free to move it. I have a Logitech Wingman Extreme joystick. Haven't bothered to hook it up, but want to play Tuxkart, etc when I need a break from work. 8) Which is the best format for hooking it up: Gameport or USB adapter? Any advantage or disadvantages to either? Your experience and input is greatly appreciated! :) I have a Creative SB Live! soundcard btw.
  9. I am not using mplayer currently, but there is some good info on setup here: http://mandrakeuser.cjb.net/ go to Part IV and scroll down to #5 Mplayer and Codecs for some details. I'm guessing you are missing a file from the way you described it. Sorry my first thought didn't cut it.

My grad school acct is like that.. 3 strikes and you are out, and that's not good when you live 9 time zones away from the school. Takes f o r e v e r for the tech guy to respond to his email too! Hopefully it is something simple and a reset gets you back in quickly. 8)

any chance it is locked out due to exceeding threshold of failed password attempts?
  12. Welcome to the board! :) Here's the easy one: Open Konqueror and go to SETTINGS--CONFIGURE KONQUEROR then pick FILE ASSOCIATIONS and the VIDEO format you want, then select the program you want to open it, click APPLY and OK and you should be good to go.
  13. Chadd: I'm guessing you might have had the same problem I have experienced in the past. I have learned to watch the word wrap very carefully when using the Easy URPMI site as it can add or delete needed spaces if the URL is very long. Frustrated me to pieces when I first started using urpmi. Figured it out after lots of aborted addmedia events and reading and re-reading the man pages. Generally I copy and paste one line at a time and pay special attention to put the spaces in correctly to avoid errors. The other problem is if the mirror is overloaded you'll get all sorts of errors but no indication of the real problem. I keep a couple update sites in Software Sources Manager and disable them so I can make a fast switch if I want to try another download site. Then I don't have to retype them and create more opportunity for syntax errors. HTH!
  14. Update on an old issue. Since I am of Scotch Irish blood, I didn't give up. I think all the Mdk updates are a factor, but Kmail is now working OK with multiple identities. You have to pay attention to the TRANSPORT options. I started by opening Compose Window, choosing my identity and then using VIEW menu in compose window added the Transport line. Then you can see that you are sending from proper identity and transport/smtp server. Kenneth's tip of going to the Identity setup and the ADVANCED tab and using the pull downs to select a TRANSPORT that matches your identity now works properly. A while back, my pull down menus for transport were all blank and nothing I entered would stay set. Now Kmail seems to work and the settings are visible and can be set properly. I am now able to send on 4 different id's and smtp setups! :) I guess the moral of the story is keep updated. What else is new?

    K3B issue...

Shen, I'll try to help until the real experts get involved. :) It will help to know what your cd rom and cd writer hardware is and how you have them setup? Are any of them newly installed since you installed Mdk? 1) Please post the brand and model of any cd/dvd devices you have. 2) I assume you are running Mandrake 9.1, but it would help if you post what your OS is for sure. 3) Please post the contents of your /etc/fstab file. The /etc/fstab is where the settings are for your cd devices. Mandrake should have set them up as scsi emulated instead of ATAPI devices. You should be able to find it using Konqueror or another file manager and go to the /etc directory, find the fstab file and double click on it. That should open the fstab file and then you can select the contents and paste it into your post here using the "Code" buttons above the message in the Post a reply box. 4) Did you use the K3b Setup wizard? If so, what errors did it give you? Providing this info will help everyone to troubleshoot your problems more quickly. HTH!
  16. Good. I sort of figured you had done this as you sounded confident like you know your way around Linux pretty well. :) I've done some surfing and see very little help on this and that is why I have been reluctant to jump in on it. Wish I had an extra computer I could use to thrash this out. I hope one of the board's guru types has some input for you! I'll be watching with great interest.
  17. I haven't been confident enough in my linux skills to try the encrypted partition option yet. I have some business related data that I cannot afford to lose to an ill-prepared experiment. I also have a need for encrypted partition and have been studying my options, so I am interested in how this thread goes. Question: Do you have all the latest Mdk 9.1 updates installed? There were LOTs of bugfixes, etc following the initial release including some to the ext3 and other disk formatting tools. I wonder if there is a connection to the encryption bug you are describing? Just a thought...
  18. Not much time to help as I am about to leave, but normally those cards/cameras are identified as /dev/sdax I use an USB card reader which mdk sees as /dev/sda1 and I mount it that way. It worked well when I plugged in the card reader and booted the computer. Mdk identified it and then I just had to mount it. I think it will do the same for your camera. The CF card is a V16 format if I remember correctly and mdk can see it fine. Search the board a bit for "mass storage" devices and "sda" and I think you'll see a couple helpful posts. Sorry I am a bit cryptic due to short time here. HTH though! :)
  19. There is an all Indonesian language Linux distro specially made for Internet Cafe and telephone exchange! I got a copy with a local Linux magazine. Pretty cool! Even includes custom billing and accounting software. Internet cafes are popular here and most serve drinks and snacks. They are hangouts for students that don't have their own computers. So they rent time to do homework assignments, chat, and send email to friends. Many small businesses get desktop publishing, scanning, business cards, brochures, flyers, and copies made in some of the larger centers. They are like the Kinko's in the USA but rowdier! We have game centers too that focus on that market, but I haven't seen any Linux game centers yet. Internet cafes are a big hit with tourists, especially backpackers and surfers. With new laws cracking down on pirated software, Linux should gain some users! If you have the right location and staff, you can do well from what I hear, but you really have to watch security issues and tighten down to prevent keylogging and illegal credit card and spam related activities. That is the big problem now.
  20. Sorry for delayed response... on SE Asia time here! :) I have used Opera for years on PC before changing to Linux. I used Opera as main browser in Linux until last month when I switched to Firebird. I used registered version of Opera to avoid the adware btw. I like Opera, but sometimes it does wierd things to webpages and the display is off. Opera says it is the html of the website that is bad... It is sort of irritating though. Firebird is similar to Galeon, but seems faster and more stable to me. I had lots of naggy problems with Galeon and gave up on it. Size wise, Opera is the smallest, Firebird and Galeon about the same, but I think Firebird is a bit smaller. Compared to IE and the others they are all small! Firebird aka Phoenix is now my browser of choice. It is fast, consistent and does everything I want it to do. Still has a bug here and there, but hey it is still in beta!
  21. Way to go! Sounds like you are doing a great job of figuring things out! :)
  22. Although I have lived and worked in SE Asia for past 10 yrs, I am originally from the US. AOL mass markets to the n'th degree there. Everybody gets AOL CD's from a million sources with FREE subscriptions that hook people up. Even have racks of the FREE CD's in stores and hotels! Most new computers sold have AOL signup software on the harddrive with tempting offers. Once people that do not understand computers hook up, they tend to stay there and think... "This is the internet!" Amazing! Like you, I cannot understand that mentality, but it exists and is a very large group of users held captive to a system. Sad. eh?
  23. read it and weep: http://www.worrywart.com/web_ring/FAQ/aolcmpr.htm One more reason not to use AOL!
  24. Is it a graphic in .art format? I had similar problem and did not find a solution either. Had to use IE to see photos my son sent me.
  25. Mozilla Firebird is something to check out! It is fast, small- to- medium sized, and kewl. Check out the tips and tricks on the website and see the themes you can install to customize it. Definitely nice. http://www.mozilla.org/projects/firebird/r...ease-notes.html Enjoy!
