  1. To be honest I can't answer that, maybe someone else can, I did a fresh install, I knew what my partitions where, I did the job myself. Compiz is now working, although I will be damned if I knew what the problem was, I haven;t really changed anything.......the joys :D
  2. are you suggesting that we make him work and us reap the benefits? if so, i wholeheartedly agree. jk arctic. seriously, if you have any comments though that'd rock. I'm using it at the moment, the boot isn't that much faster, but gnome is very quick to start up. Having troubles configuring compiz though, can't seem to find any documentation useful to me at the moment, not helped by the fact that anaconda gave me a dumbed down xorg.conf. That aside, everything else is working, although I had problems with the fglrx rpms at livna at first, this was due to anaconda installing a i586 kernel, and not a i686 as expected.
  3. Aye ;), I see they have already put up the live re-spin for FC6 already
  4. Umm, yeah I was going to point that out to you before Ian, but I didn't have the heart to break the news to ya
  5. This has already been announced in another thread, don't see that it is appropriate for a portal page on a Mandriva site, but that's just my opnion. I will note that there has been a serious slow down on the i386 dvd now, i'm now getting speeds approx 1/8th slower than just after release at 14:00 GMT. Oh, and here's the orginal announcement I received earlier:
  6. If there's anyone interested in downloading Fedora Core 6 via Bittorrent et al, the torrents are now available (5 mins before they were expected :D). Have fun. http://torrent.fedoraproject.org/ I'm currently downloading the dvd-i386 torrent at the moment, looks pretty healthy thus far, oply 5 mins needed to reach full bandwidth
  7. :-) I'd encourage every rookie to run as root only. By this he'd show as newbie, so he could sue the seller of his (proprietary) system on every error he has. Happy days to you!
  8. To be honest, it's their own fault, and I do not see anyone holding their hands up and saying yes, we could have done better, I find it hard to have sympathy with a developer showing such ignorance.
  9. Sorry, that's all I gotta say on that matter :D
  10. Good job, you made me laugh :D Gosh, you installed Fedora
  11. Gave me Ubuntu, Fedora and Debian, pretty much accurate.
  12. one home will be enough provided you don't use usernames common to both.
  13. It is Not always. Most of the time /usr/local is the default (in my experience anyways). And in actuality, it should be, because it's the proper default: Reference Oooops, my bad :D
  14. I agree, there is a lot of competition in the market for graphics cards, and the fact is that both ATI and NVidia are bound by license contracts between themselves and the actual manufacturers of the cards, e.g. sapphire, gigabyte, etc, they are not in a position to be able to relase open source drivers. They may not be entirely taking on the open source philosophy, but they are making an effort to support users of their products that use Linux, that at least has to be commended.
  15. I compiled it, if you intend to do so yourself take note of the point I made about gettext earlier.
  16. Meh, my life is dominated by spreadsheets  especially those of the Excel variety.......
  17. To be honest, I wouldn't recommend anyone using an accounts package, if they really didn't need it. To track one to say ten accounts, a spreadsheet is best. GnuCash isn't very user friendly at the moment, it takes an awful lot of setting up and does require knowledge of double-entry book-keeping, and with many accounting matters, a knowledge of your local GAAP (Generally Accepted Accounting Principles). There is some concern in the profession over non-accounting professionals using accounting software, being personal or not. There is a great deal of scope for the inexperienced to simply replace their accountant/consultant, hey we don't go through a rigourous training programme and 3 years of exams, with the last year at masters level for nothing. I would certainly not encourage anyone applying UK GAAP to their accounts to use GnuCash as it stands for reporting, It just wont happen, you would really need to draw up final accounts yourself from the trial balance as the existing Balance Sheet, Profit & Loss Account, and Cash Flow statements can not be easily customised. I have tried in vain for the last week to get the chart of accounts edited such that the statements could resemble their UK counterparts, but to me this is a fundamentally wrong as the report should be configured based on the chart of accounts, and not the other way round.
  18. A spreadsheet, seriously. To do what you want to do, I would suggest using a spreadsheet, there's no point in going into too much effort over an accounts package if all you are going to do is monitor a chequebook/bank account.
  19. Note to all that are trying to compile this, make sure you have gettext (inc devel, I dunno, I included them both) as it is a dependency, whether you have it installed or not, configure will still complete if everthing else is okay, but make will fail if it isn't there.
  20. For me personally, it first started out of interest, I wanted to try something new, and I seen a short article about Mandrake 10.1 in the tech section of the local newspaper. But then I forgot about it for a while, then approached the subject again, starting to read up on Linux again, then I bought my first mag with Mandriva 2005 as the coverdisc. That didn't go to well as I was on dial up at the time, eventually I moved to a cable connection and things evolved from there. Now I use Fedora as my distro of choice, for me it is stable and does everything I need from an OS, I still have windows for games, and I have yet to test any win based accounts apps on linux (with wine), which is a killer for me as my professional career would depend on me being able to access this software. I feel in control of my computer, and considerably wiser to the business practices of a natural monopoly that has got too big IMHO. I have no qualms about paying for software, but not if it tries, or intends to lock me into their additional software over that offered by third parties, in an attempt to mitigate competition.
  21. True, in my opinion games are the killer as far as Linux is concerned, but at the same time, gaming consoles are in the position to best serve gamers, with a few exceptions, namely those heavily reliant on keyboards. However you have to question the marketing companies of such consoles to recognise the demand for the ever so popular strategy and First person shooters, that heavily rely on keyboards, there's nothing to stop them developing and marketing a keyboard and mouse of their own in order for users to get the best out of these types of games (correct me if i'm wrong here, the last console I owned was a Playstation). So this begs the question, are PC's really needed for games, or is it just an added bonus?
  22. With regards to 3&4, i'm gueesing you are having problems with the update applet wich depends on Mandriva online, afaik mandriva online is broken. Have you tried to update through the Mandriva Control Centre, the first time you se it it should set up your update repos and update......hopefully. Not sure where to start with your email problem, which client are you using? As for sound, could you tell us which Desktop Environment you are using, and also could you try this in a terminal window: cat /dev/urandom >> /dev/dsp You should get some static noise from this. If that doesn't work, please try the following and share the output with us here: lspci -v | grep -i audio and lsmod
