  1. [root@localhost phantom]# xdpyinfo | grep resolution resolution: 75x75 dots per inch How can I change this to 96x96 dpi ? I followed a guide here to activate the 100dpi fonts, so that's ok, but I would like the overall screen resolution to be 96dpi. I got it working through changing the /usr/X11R6/bin/startx file, but this seems only to work if I start "Startx" as root, during normal bootup (with auto logon as user) I still have 75x75.
  2. Can you show me 1 laptop that is running a Opteron cpu ?
  3. Correct, they removed the expansion bay but this was also due to the NIC being build directly on the motherboard. So NIC on mobo + no sales of the HDD pack = withdrawl of the expansion bay. Another thing, I don't think they can be to serious about having a full OS on there, wouldn't that be pure provocation for illegal gaming. I mean, when there is a HDD and an OS as open as Linux there would be nothing to stop hackers for braking the security of the PS3 games. Dunno, just an idea...
  4. My list would be different as I keep the budget as a factor also. 1. ACER (despite what some say, I never had trouble with any Acer I installed, and I did a lot of them) 2. Asus 3. HP 4. Dell IBM : Good but way overprised for a personal laptop Alienware: sorry, but they are ugly Fujitsu: bad quality case Packard-Bell: If you're serious about IT you won't be buying that, they should offer those machines together with a Happy Meal at Mc Donalds. :D
  5. Sorry, did not read your post quite well, your card is a PCI card ! I think the drivers won't work on a PCI card, not for 3D accelleration anyway. When I checked the drivers they only included support for AGP or PCI-Express cards, no mentioning of older PCI cards. From a card like that I wouldn't expect any decent 3D performance anyway, that card is mainly used for office application. For a cheap upgrade I would get an AGP 9600PRO or XT and sell the 9200PCI card.
  6. When you installed the system, was the monitor connected to the onboard video or the AGP card ? What you could try is the stop the module for the onboard video from loading. Other thing, pls post your xorg.conf file or check it for any device sections and check which driver gets loaded. Also try to do a "modprobe fglrx" and give us the output of the /var/log/syslog or dmesg.
  7. Great article but I must disagree on the number of users that will buy the HDD. On the PS2 Linux was also available on so was the HDD option but they withdrew it from the latest build, the slimline version. Why ? Because sales weren't how they expected to be. What you'll need to get Linux out there is a reason for people to buy the HDD, like games who benefit from it. For example, bring BF2 to the PS3, make the online downloadble mods available through the HDD addon and people will buy it.
  8. You can always compare your xorg.conf file with the xorg.orig that was made as a backup by the ATI installer. That way you'll notice maybe the difference, a setting or maybe a module you forgot to include.
  9. Disabling onboad video can be done through the bios. If you don't have the option you should at least have an option to select the first display device (Onboard or AGP), set that to AGP. Best shot will remain to disable the onboard video.
  10. I think I don't understand a word what you're saying   Do you mean it's hot = temperature or hot = really cool laptop ? Anyway, I wouldn't get a Toshiba, IMHO they're only good for pure business use, or you need to go with the Quosimo line and then you'll have serious trouble getting all the gadgets working under Linux. Sinon t'explique en français et je pourrais t'aider. ;)
  11. I'm almost done with installing all my hardware, it's all nicely working, I'm just left with some problems concerning my external devices. External Creative Audigy 2NX: Device is recognised, driver loads ok but the sound is still coming from the internal Via AC97 card, how can I send the sound output to the external soundcard? I found some info here but it isn't very clear: http://opensource.creative.com/ External 17"TFT Sony SDM-71R:Monitor seems to work only in X and the combination FN+F5 isn't doing anything. I managed to get something working but I needed to reboot each time. I installed MDV2005LE with the external monitor connected, then it would work after a reboot. Is there a way to switch using a key combination ? USB Mouse Bluetooth or not: I have both an USB and a Bluetooth mouse, the usb one seems to work but I can't use it if I didn't boot the machine with it attached, is there a way (modprobe) to get it to work, I don't mind writing a little script that I would launch each time I need it. Then there is maybe the possibility to use the MS Bluetooth desktop I have, any ideas how to get that working? My bluetooth is working but I don't know how to pair stuff with it. USB Pinnacle PCTV USB2: Not very important but it would be nice to get it work, I haven't found a clear guide on how to install it. http://pinnacle.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/pinna...li=&p_topview=1 For the rest the laptop is running great, all the internals work and that's the main thing. Even my games run better under linux then under windows, even using Cedega!! If you guys have some info it would be great.
  12. No thanks, I'm not going to buy another laptop with an M$ licence stuck on it when I don't need it. The advantage for building a lappy yourself is that your forced to buy an unwanted M$ licence.
  13. You must have something wrong in your URPMI mirrors. I just tested and it gave me this:µ [root@localhost manu]# urpmi parted Pour satisfaire les dépendances, les 2 paquetages suivants vont être installés (1 Mo): libparted1.6-1.6.21-1mdk.i586 parted-1.6.21-1mdk.i586 Est-ce correct ? (O/n) So the package is there.
  14. Try the new ATI installer found on their website, and don't forget to do a complete reboot afterwards. Run the installer as root.
  15. Hallowed, could you try to past the result of the command: fglrxinfo instead of glxinfo and also the result of a run with fgl_glxgear instead of glxgears.
  16. Not bad those new drivers and the installer sure looks nice. Hopefully they'll continue this way. Here is the result of my tests: [manu@localhost ~]$ fgl_glxgears 2811 frames in 5.0 seconds = 562.200 FPS 3368 frames in 5.0 seconds = 673.600 FPS 3374 frames in 5.0 seconds = 674.800 FPS 3357 frames in 5.0 seconds = 671.400 FPS 3366 frames in 5.0 seconds = 673.200 FPS 3360 frames in 5.0 seconds = 672.000 FPS 3352 frames in 5.0 seconds = 670.400 FPS 3336 frames in 5.0 seconds = 667.200 FPS [manu@localhost ~]$ glxgears 10736 frames in 5.0 seconds = 2147.200 FPS 10734 frames in 5.0 seconds = 2146.800 FPS 10738 frames in 5.0 seconds = 2147.600 FPS 10738 frames in 5.0 seconds = 2147.600 FPS 10738 frames in 5.0 seconds = 2147.600 FPS 10734 frames in 5.0 seconds = 2146.800 FPS After installing you need to reboot, just a restart of X isn't enough.
  17. I'm using Kchm, works perfectly, looks like you're browsing a PDF, way better then the M$ chm viewer.
  18. I understood it the other way around. The "Club" editions would be available to all members, all cd's and dvd's. Silver members have the exception that they can download the 6cd official editions. But maybe adam can shed a light on this ?
  19. I just put a machine together: Accessories [A]: None Accessories : None Audio: AC97 with Built-in Microphone & 2 Stereo Speakers & Subwoofer CPU/Processor: AMD Mobile Athlon™ 64 3400+ (+90) Extended Warranty: Standard 1 Year Standard Warranty Hard Disk: 80GB 5400RPM (+$100.00) Memory: 1GB PC2700 DDR333 [2x512MB] (+$161.00) Model: 15.0 AMD Mobile Athlon 64 Z80K XGA/ SXGA+ TFT Display Modem: Built In 56Kbps V.90/V.92 AC-Link modem Networking: 10/100/1000 Integrated Ethernet Office Suite: None Operating System: None Optical Storage: DVD/CDRW Combo Utilites: None Wireless Networking: Integrated WLAN 802.11 B/G module This comes with an ATI 9700Pro 128MB card and it's only +/- 1600$ which seems like a very nice price compared to what I paid
  20. Have a look here: http://store.topmic.com/asz8amdmoat6.html They seel some good machines and you don't have to take an M$ licence along with it. PS: I don't have anything to do with this store, I don't know them, I just found them through googling for Barebone laptop systems.
  21. Thank you very much sir, works like a charm
  22. I tried to add a line "ndiswrapper" to /etc/modules but it doesn't seem to load on boot. So at each reboot I need to su and do a modprobe ndiswrapper to get my wifi to work. Any idead which files to edit to get things started on boot ?
  23. Sure why not, it will even be better as you can choose the components and make sure they are 100% compatible. For example, check that the GFX is Nvidia as ATI's drivers are not as good, for the modem check the compatibility also, etc...
  24. It looks like it's coming : http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/conte...5060500783.html But they still keep it quiet, not a lot of news to be found on the net yet.
  25. Just make sure that in your /etc/X11/xorg.conf file the correct driver is loaded This is the part you should be looking for: # === ATI device section === Section "Device" Identifier "ATI Graphics Adapter" Driver "fglrx" Screen 0 BusID "PCI:1:0:0" # vendor=1002, device=4e50 Option "FSAAMSPosY1" "0.000000" Option "StereoSyncEnable" "1" See the option "Driver "fglrx"", that's the important part.
