  1. Not sure if this helps at all, but I found this: http://hr.uoregon.edu/davidrl/samba/printi...g.html#PRINTSMB It goes through basics of setting up printing under Samba. I don't have it set up myself, but see if it helps you at all. Just as a note for clarification, the drivers are installed on the XP box(en) right?
  2. Thanks for sending that to me. I will take a look at it when I get home and do some comparison and see what I can come up with. Could you also send me the /etc/pcmcia/wireless.opts file?
  3. http://www.introversion.co.uk/uplink/devel...evelopercd.html It's not free ($49.99US, more than I paid for the full game), and it's not open source...yet, but it is interesting and I thought someone might find this useful. I think I may pick up a copy just to give the code a peek.
  4. I was actually surprised to see it here in my small town ( ~60,000, even with ~ 21,000 students at USU). There are 2 separate stores in Logan that I can get LXF at (same price at each) along with a lot of other Linux magazines and books. It's really nice.
  5. Not so hard for me. I can pick it up at Borders any day. It's $13.99US there I think, though. I can't find the DVD issues, though. Are they separate by any chance?
  6. open a terminal window (shift + F2 and type konsole and hit enter) then type armyops in the terminal window.

Did you try it with the GOTY installer? Do you get the same results with both?
  8. From your Mobo manual: It also gives a website link http://www.agpforum.org which appears to be part of intel's website. There are downloads available there for windows and linux; but the wording on the site makes me think it's only for intel chipsets, which your Mobo isn't. Interesting.
  9. I had a problem back in the 8.0 days that was similar to what is being described, disabling supermount and reinstalling fixed it.
  10. (from memory, so bear with me) Go to Mandrake Control Center -> Mount Points -> CD/DVD/CD Writer (whichever you want, I would do all that apply to you) -> Choose options and click OK; uncheck the supermount option and check both of the other options. Click ok, done, when it asks if you want to save the modifications to the fstab, say yes. Do the same for any other cd-rom drives and floppy if you want. Then, on your desktop, right click and choose create new -> CD ROM device. Choose your icon if you don't want to use the default. For the mount point, I think it's the third tab on the top, choose the mount point of your cdrom from the list (I think /mnt/cdrom by default) and choose ok. After that, you can right click on this new icon and choose mount to mount the disk. Then open a console and try to reinstall ut. Give it a try and let us know.
  11. Do you have supermount on? That may be part of this problem. If you do, disable it and try again. Don't think this is possible as the executable files are different, it may be possible to copy some data from a windows install, but not all of it. I say you should do this anyway, even if/when you get your UT install working, ut2k3 is still a great game. Better graphics, better engine(IMHO), and it's an all around great game.

I guess I should have all my settings written out to input them as I go. Is there a console command I can use that will display the details for me? If you use DHCP with your cable provider (I imagine you do) then you should be able to choose auto-detection, DHCP, obtain IP automatically. If you were assigned an IP by your ISP, you need to know that, the default gateway, the DNS server, and 1 or 2 more things, I'm not sure. Most cable providers now use DHCP (I think) so your IP is assigned by them. It may never change (like mine, 2 years and it's only changed once, when @home was taken over by attbi) but it is still assigned by them.

Just for a laugh, go to MCC and run the networking wizard again. Make sure you choose expert and choose the option for cable modem. I'm not sure if this will help or hinder; but it's worth a shot before you resort to a windows-like reinstall.

why did you use the GOTY installer if you have the normal version, not GOTY edition? go back and get the regular edition installer. He has the version from Totally Unreal, I think, which is the GOTY version.

I will keep checking this thread all night. When I get home from work, I will get on my laptop and see what is there. Did you go through the networking setup during install? I would assume so, but just checking.
  16. Delete file:/usr/share/doc/HTML/index.html out of that file. That's really strange that it's even there, but that's obviously an error. Could you send me your /etc/pcmcia/config file? I want to try something for you, but I need to see the file since I don't have access to my laptop at work.

How do I do that? by typing /etc/dhcpd.conf in a console I get: no such file or directory. Try typing it in a root, if that doesn't work, look in /etc for that file, if it is there open it and post what is in it.

I've never heard of that happening, but then again, I can't get my own network working (5 IP addresses, all given to me by my ISP; all I want is to share the printer between my laptop and desktop) so it could very well be that. I can't imagine that Gnome would complain about the ZeroConf name of the XP box during startup, but it is possible.

I'm thinking that is a ZeroConf hostname. That's the default for MDK9.1 when you are set up as using DHCP. Cannonfodder wrote a great FAQ about this, it took some searching but I found it here The ZeroConf looks a lot like the MAC address, but I don't think it actually is.

Did you try Steve's suggestion, replacing the 'localhost' in /etc/hosts with the output of hostname? You can also go to MCC and run the network config tool in expert mode to set the hostname to whatever you want instead of tht address. Might be easier for you. It certainly is easier for me to do it that way.

I think there's a way in the boot section of MCC to change your default WM/DE. If not, you can always use kdm/gdm/xdm/mdkkdm for graphical boot. You should be able to choose from a list within that which one you want to log into.
  22. Glad you got it working. No need to feel bad, sometimes the answer is right in front of our faces, all we need is a little push in the right direction. Next we need to know if LordGrahf got his working.
  23. Is the card working? Can you boot into X with it in? Just trying to figure out a bit so we can jump in for assistance. I will assume you're using Mandrake 9.1 and have followed my tutorial to get everything set up. The 128-bit WEP encryption is controlled by a password that is set up on your Access Point, Router, or other means of connecting to a wireless network. If you to to MCC -> Hardware -> HardDrake you will be able to configure the wireless card under Network Adapters. There is a section in there that lets you choose either Managed or Automatic for your network. If there is no password (common here in the states for open access networks on college campuses, at least it is for my school) then choose Automatic. If there is a password, you will need to choose Managed and provide that password in one of the feilds supplied. I'm not sure which, but if you can't get it from there I will look on my laptop to see. Hope that helps you out. Let me know if that's not your problem, or something else isn't working.

I have that version as well, and it works great for me too. I just used the GOTY installer, since it's the GOTY version that comes with Totally Unreal.
  25. If Steve's suggestion doesn't work (and how you figured that out Steve, I may never know but bravo) You might want to try adding: *,*,*,00:30:F1:*) INFO="[provide some info about your card here]" ESSID="[provide your network name here]" MODE="[managed or automatic]" KEY="[if you use encryption, provide your key here]" to your /etc/pcmcia/wireless.opts file. The default should be in there already and should work, the very top line works with my card, but there is a default there that should work for any card. You might need to reconfigure some other options in there. Also, try removing the options you put in for the card in /etc/pcmcia/config, turn the laptop off and put the card back in, boot up the laptop and put the stuff back in to that file but before you reboot, go into MCC -> Hardware and scan for new hardware to see if the card is there. If so, follow the instructions in my tutorial on how to configure it. See what happens and let us know.
