  1. I used 0.93 when Mandriva 2006 just stopped working. My impression was generally (very) good. Almost everything was working out of the box. The community is helpful, you can even find the devs on the forum. It has a way less packages than Mandriva though it still has about 5000. It's KDE centric. They had Gnome in the repos but it was an ancient version and Texstar made it clear that Gnome is not among his highest priorities. This KDE centricness is true in the case of packages. If you need a program to solve a problem then it's more likely you'll find the KDE equivalent of the program in the repo. Although you can request packages in the forum it's not sure you'll get them. I think this amount is about the max they can handle. Thac makes packages for PCLinuxOS so if somethings missing you can ask him.

  3. Without the exact error message we can't really help. Updating the kernel is not enough you have to update the kernel-source too. Or kernel-source-stripped. This way if you are using dkms-nvidia recompiling the nvidia kernel module will be automatic. Anyway when you log in on the command line type startx that should start KDE or your default graphic desktop. If not post the last lines of the error message it produces, here. You can find some additional info about x server errors in the /var/log/Xorg.0.log file. The lines beginning with (WW) are warnings and the lines beginning with (EE) are errors. Post them here. 5. Well he didn't start as a contractor. He started as a fan who made mandrivauser.de. If you want to see what he\they have done just take a look at that site. They have a support forum of course, their own wiki, they are translating the Mandriva wiki, they have their own repo and their own Mandriva magazine not to mention about smart-urpmi which they created. Do you think paying one man doesn't worth all this? What kind of business strategy can make you hurt your fan base? Or maybe even loose it? And IMHO firing Duval and firing (not renewing contract of) wobo is different. Although Duval was a founder but "he wasn't visible", meaning one could have barely met his presence on the forum, wiki etc. Wobo was always there, even on the English club forum. He was\is a true community leader. People like him are worth a thousand times more than what they get in pay. Am I the only one who thinks this was a stupid thing to do?

  9. You should put a warning in English there.
  10. We've all seen unanswered bug reports on the Mandriva bugzilla. Many times. To handle and improve this situation, David Barth made some internal re-organization. Anne Nicolas is the new Engineering Director and she promoted our old friend Adam Williamson to Bugmaster. Unfortunately he hasn't and won't have the time to do it all by himself. So the first step is to make a team and clean up the Bugzilla database. If you'd like to help and get involved, this is your chance.
  11. You have two partitions. A root (/) and a home partition. Everything you install with urpmi goes into your root partition. Everything you download, work with etc plus your personal settings goes to your home partition and you have plenty of space there. Unfortunately it's not true for your root partition. I assume you tried out a lot of new software simply because you were curious and your root partition filled up. You can simply delete a a few programs using the software manager. Or if you like to have a lots of software you can repartition your hd giving more space to your /. Unfortunately that requires a reinstall.
  12. To keep your personal settings you should use a separate partition for your home dir. I don't know how it can be done on a USB key but it can be done AFAIK. Though your root partition will be wiped if you install\upgrade from a live cd. So your personal settings will be saved your package selection will not with this method. Mandriva now sells 4G USB keys and IMHO they can be upgraded.
  13. IMHO it should be in the news forum so everybody would see this.
  14. I hope you didn't start downloading yet because all the themes of the different Mandriva releases are available in the repos. Just install the one you like.
  15. All the themes of the different Mandriva editions are available in the repos just search for them in the package manager.
  16. For 2007 they made a dozen live CDs. So there was at least one for every supported language. Now they made only two live CDs. One with Gnome and one with KDE. And they dropped most of the languages so mine isn't listed there too. You only need the extra i18 CD if you install Mandriva to your hard drive and don't have a reliable and fast connection where you install it. But it won't fix the list for you.
  17. Run XFdrake. Setup your video card again. Then the problem should be solved.
  18. The new version of the PHP 5 and 4 tree has been released with important security fixes. A part of the security bugs was announced in the Month of PHP Bugs project. PHP 5.2.2 Release Announcement PHP 5.2.2 Release Announcement source: hup.hu

  20. Great, you just met dependency hell. This is the disadvantage of using the plain rpm command. You can download and install that package too hoping it won't have another dependency or you can turn dependency checking off. See the man page of rpm.
  21. I know but the reliability of the network is a potential risk. While if you downloaded and checked the iso files this is not an issue. I guess this is the reason why upgrade over network is not officially supported. Correct me if I'm wrong.
