New Windows-compatible OS on the horizon?

Recommended Posts

A Korean company held a press event today during which it launched its Tmax Window operating system. Built on in-house technology, they claim it has 100% compatibility with Windows software.
Story here: http://www.marketwire.com/press-release/Tmax-1013937.html and here (screenshot included) http://cosmic.mearie.org/2009/07/tmax-window/

I wonder if they will get sued, using Linux, BSD, ReactOS and Windows technology ... according to the second article.

What's the point?!

For those who absolutely MUST HAVE Windows compatibility, there is Windows, for everyone else there are several better OSes available!

To be able to run Windows software without dumping a bunch of cash into MS's pockets?

It'd be better to just dump a load of investment into wine to get all apps to work under that - job done.

I agree, or even better mail software manufacturers of windows software you can't do without and for which there is no suitable Linux alternative and let them know you would really like to see a Linux version of it.

Smaller software companies won't ignore your requests, they will consider it once the requests keep coming in.

(just to clarify: I'm not talking about asking them to opensource their software, that would almost certainly lead nowhere, just to release it as commercial binary-only software for Linux)

If it looks too good to be true, it probably is.

The second article was very interesting. This could be a clever way to boost the developer's stock price. Ever heard of pump and dump?

Interesting was that the screenshots all looked like hacks and that they really didn't portray what they were supposed to be portraying - in that this OS doesn't simply exist or simply isn't ready yet. It seemed to be WinXP modified and photo-edited screenshots to make it look like they had produced something.

WINE probably won't ever be able to run any and all Windows applications - for one reason alone, not all API calls in Windows have a equivalent in Linux that WINE can translate the call to. By building an OS specifically for this purpose, you can ensure all calls have an equivalent. Edited by tyme
