I'd be utterly surprised if you didn't, as Mandy 2008.1 does not have xorg 1.5.x and input hotplugging... so a usable xorg.conf is mandatory, unless of course you're using a DE like XFCE4, which can also run (with quite some limitations) on framebuffer.

Did you mean "/etcX11/xorg.conf"? I always had it. Can you run X server without it?

If I turn compiz on, all motions become fine and smooth again, but i have no window decoration then... How do I solve that?

You could install emerald, the windows decorator for compiz.

 

After you install it, launch the CompizConfig Settings Manager and select Window decorations. In the text box next to Command, type "emerald".

emerald --replace

If you still have no decorations, call "fusion-icon" (or compiz settings directly) and there under effects check the "window decoration" item in.

I had a similar problem on openSuse, so i went to their forum and found a solution. All i needed to do was:

 

su -
nvidia-xconfig --composite
nvidia-xconfig --render-accel
nvidia-xconfig --add-argb-glx-visuals -d 24

 

But using compiz isn't a real solution, because it slows the system a bit. It is especially noticeable when playing 3D games like OpenArena.

Did you consider Openbox?

It works fine here with both Gnome and XFCE4, and probably KDE4 as well.
