Guest Falcon
I just completed an install of 9.1, for some reason I boot up to a command line interface no matter what I choose in the boot loader. Any help will be appreciated. Falcon
Ixthusdan
You need more ram.
paCkeTroUTer
It happened to me the first time I installed it 2 weeks ago..... booted into CLI even though I had 192MB RAM. I re-installed it and everything worked fine..... donno why it behaved like that.
Guest anon
How much ram do you have? If you think you have enough, have you tried typing startx after you have logged on? any error messages?
Ixthusdan
Sorry, you have 96MB of ram. I confused your machine with another one! You have enough ram. Try what anon says: type "startx" and see what happens.
bvc
What video card?
DragonMage
Other possible explanations. 1. You accidentally choose no when asked whether you want X to start as default, hence you are booting to init 3 by default 2. dm service is not loaded somehow. 3. Your chosen dm (mandrakekdm, kdm, gdm) is corrupted so it won't load.
Guest Falcon
I can't beleive the great response I get here.... Basically, I will try typing startx at the CLI. It's kind of interesting, when I halt the system and everything shuts down, the DM fails, everything else gets an "ok" response. Also, I have 2mb integrated graphics, I beleive it's an ATI Rage 3D. Like I said, I'll try startx first but if my DM is corrupted do I have to reinstall the whole OS? Thanks... Falcon
bvc
but if my DM is corrupted do I have to reinstall the whole OS?no, but it's not likely either unless you have a bad burn/bad cd. a dm failing to shutdown [OK] is so common on ML9.1 it almost wouldn't seem like 9.1 without it :P . Since you're seeing that error that means startx is most likely not going to work because the dm has already tried multiple times, BUT, at least it should point us to the prob. Post your /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 file along with the errors from startx. You can also try to reconfigure X as root with XFdrake or XFdrake --expert or XFdrake --expert --noauto SEE: XFdrake --help for more info. or drakconf
Guest Falcon
OK I ran startx and it failed I'm not sure how to copy off of the screen so I'll just type what I think is relevant: (EE) ATI(0): No Display subsection in Screen section "screen1" for depth/fbbpp 8/8 (EE) Screen(s) found, but none have a usavle configuration. Fatal server error: no screens found XI0: fatal error 104 (Connection reset by peer) on X server "0:0" after 0 requests (0 unknown processed) with 0 events remaining. Then it takes me back to my localhost prompt. Falcon
Pzatch
you'll need to switch to admin or root. type in su - Then it will ask for your root/admin password go ahead and type that in. Now you can try typing in xf86config This will try to make a vidio configuration file for you. It looks like the one you made during the install(if you made one) isn't working now. You'll need your vidio cards chipset, monitor refresh rates and resolution. Start simly with low settings. I don't know possativly about ATI chipsets but a basic VESA driver should work. Unless you find your exact chipset in the list. Once a basic GUI is running then getting it to work better is relativly easier.
Guest Falcon
I went through the configuration. I then ran startx, same exact error. Any other suggestions out there? Falcon
Guest Falcon
Just another piece of info. for the brave soul who decides to help me out with this problem..(this time anyway :? ) When I boot up this is what I get: localhost login: ********** Password: ********** ldm_validate_partition_table(): Disk read failed. ldm_validate_partition_table(): Disk read failed. Last Login: Tue Oct 7 02:24:00 on tty1 [**********@localhost **********]$ Could that Disk read failure be part of this problem???? liquidzoo
Do you have a USB Zip drive? I get those same errors when I have my USB Zip plugged in. Hasn't hurt anything yet
Guest Falcon
Yes I do have zip drive but it's not USB... Any other suggestions on how to get it to boot to the GUI instead of the CLI? Falcon
