debian newbie- can't get into X

Recommended Posts

OK now for the /etc/modutils/options file:

Here is what is in it:

options ide-cd ignore=/dev/hdd

Heres what happens when I do 'update-modules':

debian:/home/mike# update-modules

/etc/modutils/options: line 1: options: command not found

Error while executing /etc/modutils/options, aborting

debian:/home/mike#

My machine must not like Debian, eh?

WHOA, this post was way wrong. The correct syntaz is that:

options ide-cd ignore=/dev/hdd

Then update-modules, and it should go... The other option is to use a 2.6 kernel, where you no longer require SCSI emulation for burning (at least not with my new favorite GUI program, X-CD-Roast).

You will need to add an entry to /etc/fstab for your CD-RW drive to work...

Can you tell me what your layout is for your drives? Like:

primary master (hda) = 80GB hard drive

primary slave (hdb) = DVD-ROM drive

secondary master (hdc) = 8GB hard drive

secondary slave (hdd) = CD-RW drive

(that's for my system)

I need to know yours, otherwise your options file might be wrong (if your CD-RW drive isn't hdd, then you need to change it, and so on).

Well, I haven't had time yet to follow up on Debian, but I accidently installed SuSE 8.2 onto my Debian partition, no, really, it was an accident.

I love it! This is the coolest thing (next to Mandrake) !!!

(ahemm..) but I will asap reload my Debian on the extra partition I created -which I THOUGHT was going to be for SuSE and not for Debian, cuz obviously I did NOT want to overwrite all the stuff we had done so far...

Oh well, at least I got something good out of a dumb mistake. :)

This thread covers just about all you'll need. (and I haven't given up, just got sidetracked...)

No doubt Debian makes you feel like a virgin, heh heh heh!

I have been messing with SuSE a few days, and it is a lot less emasculating IMHO, and I think it is very well done, for the most part. Had one little installation glitch, where it would go to install a USB module, and when I would click 'OK' it would lock the mouse up, leaving me stranded mid-install.

Other than that, if SuSE had something like urpmi or apt-get, it would be extremely cool. 8)

Lots of luck to you...

I think Im going to try a different monitor!

1280x1024 LCD with VESA driver isn't an option...

So I guess either stick in a different vid card or change to another monitor until I get the nvidea compiled...

Will follow the DOlsen guide :D

Its getting a strain doing it all from different tty terminals

I just keep messing it up.:oops::oops::oops:

I changed the usb keyboard and mouse for a ps/2 one since part of he problem seemed to be the USB mouse.

Partly I just don't know what Debian expects... and only having text mode .... well I keep doing mistakes i wouldn't normally .... after reading this I see the source needs untar/zip.. but for all I knew the make-kpkg might expect input from a tgz? I think the problem is I don't know which parts to do deb specific and which general. Like DOlsen says, getting the kernel from kernel.org and doing it the conventional way. or doing it the deb way.

Problem is I get lost halfway through the deb way when it falls over and I dunno what to do...

I installed and sucessfully ran apt-spy and updated sources to untable

then:

apt-get update

apt-get dist-upgrade

I tried an ap-get kernel-source.... and seemed OK and instead of the 'normal'

make make modules make install ... i tried the make-kpkg/dkpg stuff.

Everything seemed OK, it compiled a kernel, suspicously quickly (30 mins) but it is an athalon 2800+ ?

make-kpkg clean kernel_image kernel_headers modules_clean modules_image

however seems to have only made 1 deb. so:

dpkg -i kernel-image-2.4.21-preempt_10.00.Custom_i386.deb

I also tried just an apt-get kernel-image andchose the recent k7 one. (2.4.21)

OK, seems OK but it tells me to add a initrd=/initrd to my lilo.conf...which I did but then lilo gave me the error on startup.

Half the probelm is I changed keyboard and mouse to ps/2 since prob's with the USB... thought Id work it out later.... but now I switched a fr keyb for a da keyb.

Ouch.... :wq! takes some getting used to so everything is so painful to type.

Give me a clue guys .... I'm wasting too much time on the stupid stuff and if I could get X working then I'd feel less pressed and probably stop making mistakes so much....I also got lots of otrher stuff to do including a build on my XBOX with deb. Thats one reason I thought Id try it.

Any shortcut to get to this point greatly appreciated....
