Setting up scanner [solved]

I never really use my scanner much and mcc says it is unsupported, so when I need to scan I boot into windows and then back into linux to print (my printer doesn't work in windows, the driver is really crappy and slows down windows too much) but googling today I quickly found it is supported through sane, I can see even see the correct sane backends installed, however I don't know how to enable them.... I have a very old Lifetek LT 9350

# sane-find-scanner -pv

# sane-find-scanner will now attempt to detect your scanner. If the

# result is different from what you expected, first make sure your

# scanner is powered up and properly connected to your computer.

# No SCSI scanners found. If you expected something different, make sure that

# you have loaded a kernel SCSI driver for your SCSI adapter.

# No USB scanners found. If you expected something different, make sure that

# you have loaded a kernel driver for your USB host controller and have setup

# the USB system correctly. See man sane-usb for details.

found possible Mustek parallel port scanner at "parport0"

# Your Mustek parallel port scanner was detected. It may or

# may not be supported by SANE. Please read the sane-mustek_pp

# man-page for setup instructions.

# Most Scanners connected to the parallel port or other proprietary ports

# can't be detected by this program.

I uncommented and changed the port in /etc/sane.d/mustek_pp.conf

scanner LT9350 parport0 cis1200

option top_adjust 0

option bw 127

One of the internet pages with the manual I followed: http://www.die.net/doc/linux/man/man5/sane-mustek_pp.5.html

Is there any "scanner" usergroup in your system after installing sane ?

If it is, then add yourself to the group, and then logout and back in again.

Does it work now?

I had already created a group scanner myself and added myself but it didn't work

Logging in, logging out did it :wall:

Thanks

Incidently there are many more scanners supported by mandriva's version of sane yet, mcc says there is no support :wall:

You could reset the permissions for /dev/parport0 by adding the appropriate line to the bottom of /etc/rc.local file and get it to do it for you automatically.

The command will be the same as what you normally type at the prompt yourself manually, however you're resetting the permissions too.

Is it a parallel port scanner? (haven't seen one of the kind since ages...).

Yes, it's very very old* :) but still does the job.

(* in fact it is so old that I almost felt ashamed a few years ago asking Lifetec, the manufacturer for support, which I got by email only 10 minutes after asking at 17:35, instead of just buying a new one )
