Going from 32 to 64 bits: What to expect & know

Recommended Posts

For the record, the latest version of Sun java has (at last) a browser plugin and a java webstart applet...

And from what I've been told the latest flash beta works natively on 64-bit without serious issues.

Does this mean that mandy 64 bit is ready to be used as a complete home desktop PC?

I have Ubuntu 8.10 x86_64 installed, and I generally only have problems with java, even though I have the 64 bit version in, I still sometimes have the odd problem of something not working how I expect it. However, for that there's always VMware and Windows as a virtual machine if I'm really desperate to use that particular functionality.

Otherwise, no other problems.

I have those kind of problems with 32bit Java too, I guess it's more a Java thing... B)

I've been using Mandy 2009.1 x64 in cooker. Haven't noticed any compatibility issues or anything weird... Flash, Java etc are all happy.

It is quicker, but thats probably due more to the kernel and Mandrivas changes rather than the 64 bit-ness.
